Thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAAD) is an autosomal-dominant disorder with major life-threatening complications. The disease displays great genetic heterogeneity with some forms allelic to Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndrome, and an important number of cases still remain unexplained at the molecular level. Through whole-exome sequencing of affected members in a large TAAD-affected family, we identified the c.472CT (p.Arg158(∗)) nonsense mutation in MFAP5 encoding the extracellular matrix component MAGP-2. The enantiomers of phenprocoumon: pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic studies.

The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the optical enantiomers of phenprocoumon were studied in 5 normal subjects and compared to the racemic mixture. Each subject received a single oral dose of 0.6 mg/kg of racemic, S(-), and R(+) phenprocoumon. S(-) phenprocoumon was 1.6 to 2.6 times as a potent as R(+) phenprocoumon when the area under the effect/time curve was used to quantify the total anticoagulant effect per dose. Comparing the plasma concentrations that elicited the same anticoagulant effect, S(-) phenprocoumon was 1.5 to 2.5 times as potent as R(+) phenprocoumon. The aims of this study were to identify the indications to perform a total pancreatectomy and to evaluate the outcome and quality of life of the patient who underwent this operation. A retrospective analysis of a prospective database, regarding all the patients who underwent total pancreatectomy from January 2006 to June 2009, was carried out. Perioperative and outcome data were analyzed in two different groups: ductal adenocarcinoma (group 1) and non-ductal adenocarcinoma (group 2). The evaluation of post-operative outcomes is necessary once we describe an innovative surgical approach. Objective— In familial hypobetalipoproteinemia, fatty liver is a characteristic feature, and there are several reports of associated cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma. We investigated a large kindred in which low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fatty liver, and hepatocarcinoma displayed an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Approach and Results— The proband was a 25-year-old female with low plasma cholesterol and hepatic steatosis.
