Sign Languages Recognition Based on Neural Network Architecture

2017

In the last years, many steps forward have been made in speech and natural languages recognition and were developed many virtual assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Google Now and Microsoft Cortana. Unfortunately, not everyone can use voice to communicate to other people and digital devices. Our system is a first step for extending the possibility of using virtual assistants to speech impaired people by providing an artificial sign languages recognition based on neural network architecture.

Selective erasure of a fear memory

2009

International audience; Memories are thought to be encoded by sparsely distributed groups of neurons. However, identifying the precise neurons supporting a given memory (the memory trace) has been a long-standing challenge. We have shown previously that lateral amygdala (LA) neurons with increased cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREB) are preferentially activated by fear memory expression, which suggests that they are selectively recruited into the memory trace. We used an inducible diphtheria-toxin strategy to specifically ablate these neurons. Selectively deleting neurons overexpressing CREB (but not a similar portion of random LA neurons) after learning b…

Dissociation between priming and recognition in the expression of sequential knowledge

2002

Exposure to a repeating sequence of target stimuli in a speeded localization task can support both priming of sequence-consistent responses and recognition of sequence components. Here, a task is introduced in which measures of priming and recognition are obtained concurrently, and it is demonstrated that priming of sequence-consistent responses occurs even when test stimuli are not recognized. The results show that sequence knowledge can be expressed in the absence of conscious recognition. However, we also show that this result is consistent with a simple model in which priming and recognition depend on exactly the same underlying memory strength variable.

Classifying Healthy Children and Children with Attention Deficit through Features Derived from Sparse and Nonnegative Tensor Factorization Using Even…

2010

In this study, we use features extracted by Nonnegative Tensor Factorization (NTF) from event-related potentials (ERPs) to discriminate healthy children and children with attention deficit (AD). The peak amplitude of an ERP has been extensively used to discriminate different groups of subjects for the clinical research. However, such discriminations sometimes fail because the peak amplitude may vary severely with the increased number of subjects and wider range of ages and it can be easily affected by many factors. This study formulates a framework, using NTF to extract features of the evoked brain activities from time-frequency represented ERPs. Through using the estimated features of a ne…

Genistein effect on cognition in prodromal Alzheimer's disease patients : the GENIAL clinical trial

2022

Background: Delaying the transition from minimal cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s dementia is a major concern in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) therapeutics. Pathological signs of AD occur years before the onset of clinical dementia. Thus, long-term therapeutic approaches, with safe, minimally invasive, and yet efective substances are recommended. There is a need to develop new drugs to delay Alzheimer’s dementia. We have taken a nutritional supplement approach with genistein, a chemically defned polyphenol that acts by multimodal specifc mechanisms. Our group previously showed that genistein supplementation is efective to treat the double transgenic (APP/PS1) AD animal model. Methods: In this…

The Anabasis of Patrick: Travelling an allegorical narrative map of illness and disability

2018

Abstract Objectives This paper examines the stories of Patrick, a man living with cancer and a spinal cord injury. Design An intrinsic case study was used to address Patrick's experiences. The design of the study is underpinned by narrative dialogism. Method Photo-elicitation interviews were conducted. Visual and verbal data were analysed using a dialogical narrative analysis. Results Patrick aligned his experiences with a story titled Anabasis to organize and express them. Although Anabasis is not a story about illness, it provides Patrick with an allegorical narrative map of how to live with disability and survive illness. Within ‘The Anabasis of Patrick’, the analysis identified three st…

Maddalena Opioid Switching Score in patients with cancer pain

2021

Evaluation of opioid switching (OS) for cancer pain has not been properly assessed. The aim of this study was to assess an integrated score (Maddalena Opioid Switching Score) as a simple and repeatable tool to evaluate the outcomes of OS, facilitating the interpretation and comparison of studies, and information exchange among researchers. The integrated score took into account pain intensity, intensity of opioid-related symptoms, and cognitive function by using an author's formula. Physical and psychological symptoms were evaluated by the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale and Patient Global Impression (PGI) by the minimal clinically important difference. One hundred six patients were analy…

Room acoustical parameters: A factor analysis approach

2009

Abstract In this study, we determined the most representative acoustical parameters for halls intended for verbal or music audition. Our study was carried out in nine halls of different shapes and designed for different uses. We measured the impulse response at a great number of points (many more than the minimum required by the ISO 3382 norm). From a physical viewpoint, all halls are enclosed three-dimensional areas. Our work hypothesis is that objective (measurable) acoustical parameters, or a combination of such parameters, must provide the acoustical information specific to each hall and must make it possible to grade each hall. Factor analysis was used to obtain these grading parameter…

The Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices in Healthy Children: A Qualitative Approach

2020

Studies on the structure of intelligence refer to two main theoretical models: the first one considers intelligence as a unitary construct, the second one assumes the involvement of a plurality of factors. Studies using Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM) tasks have often highlighted the involvement of different cognitive abilities and brain structures, but in the clinical setting, RCPM measurement continues to be used as a single score. The current study aimed to analyse the RCPM performance following qualitative clustering, in order to provide an interpretation of the intelligence assessment through a factorial criterion. The RCPM have been administered to a large group of typica…

Counter-Clock World: How Planning Backwards Helps in Moving Forward in Collapsing Environments

2021

Research on corporate decline and turnarounds as well as the strategic use of history have so far remained two separate research fields. We integrate these two fields with a thought experiment, proposing ways in which strategists can work with, and through time in managing and turning around declines. Our thought experiment involves two very different types of analogies: a textual one from Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novels, on the one hand, and a visual one from Einsteinian relativity science, on the other hand. Inspired and informed by these different conceptualizations of the past and time, we develop four forms of backward strategizing to successfully manage a struggling corporatio…
