This chapter presents variants of Brunswik’s lens model aimed to understand whether, when, and why trait judgments are more or less accurate. After outlining the basic concepts of lens models, it describes exemplary studies that have applied the lens model to unravel personality expression and impression formation processes that lead to more or less accurate judgments. Pattern-Recognition: a Foundational Approach

This paper aims at giving a contribution to the ongoing attempt to turn the theory of pattern-recognition into a rigorous science. In this article we address two problems which lie at the foundations of pattern-recognition theory: (i) What is a pattern? and (ii) How do we come to know patterns? In so doing much attention will be paid to tracing a non-arbitrary connection between (i) and (ii), a connection which will be ultimately based on considerations relating to Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Properties and application of nondeterministic quantum query algorithms

Many quantum algorithms can be analyzed in a query model to compute Boolean functions where input is given by a black box. As in the classical version of decision trees, different kinds of quantum query algorithms are possible: exact, zero-error, bounded-error and even nondeterministic. In this paper, we study the latter class of algorithms. We introduce a fresh notion in addition to already studied nondeterministic algorithms and introduce dual nondeterministic quantum query algorithms.
