Inelastic neutron and low-frequency Raman scattering in niobium-phosphate glasses: the role of spatially fluctuating elastic and elasto-optic constan…

2011

We investigate the low-frequency enhancement of vibrational excitations ('boson peak') in niobium-phosphate glasses through the combination of inelastic neutron and polarization-resolved Raman scattering. The spectra of these glasses reveal an enhancement of the vibrational density of states and of the cross section for spontaneous Raman scattering in the frequency range below 150?cm ? 1. A recent theoretical model that is based on fluctuating elastic and elasto-optic (Pockels) constants provides a unified description of the measured neutron and Raman spectra, including the depolarization ratio.

Raman Scattering in CuCl under Pressure

1999

Raman spectra of CuCl were measured under hydrostatic pressures up to 14 GPa at low temperatures (T = 5 K). The anomaly in the Raman lineshape of zincblende CuCl at frequencies near the transverse-optic (TO) mode, which consists of a broad structure with several maxima, disappears at a pressure near 3 GPa. This effect is well reproduced by a model calculation of the anharmonic coupling of the TO mode to acoustic two-phonon states (Fermi resonance). Alternative interpretations of the TO Raman anomaly in terms of local vibrational modes of Cu atoms in off-center positions are not supported by the present results. Raman spectra indicate the existence of the phase CuCl-IIa in a narrow pressure …

Robust control for quantum technologies and quantum information processing

2022

We consider the robust inverse geometric optimization of arbitrary population transfers and single-qubit gates in a two-level system.Robustness with respect to pulse inhomogeneities is demonstrated. We show that for time or energy optimization, the pulse amplitude is constant, and we provide the analytic form of the detuning as Jacobi elliptic cosine. We deal with the task of robust complete population transfer on a 3-level quantum system in lambda configuration.First, we use the Lewis-Riesenfeld method to derive a family of solutions leading to an exact transfer.Among this family, we identify a tracking solution with a single parameter to control simultaneously the fidelity of the transfer, …

Probabilistic Logic under Coherence‚ Model−Theoretic Probabilistic Logic‚ and Default Reasoning in System P

2016

We study probabilistic logic under the viewpoint of the coherence principle of de Finetti. In detail, we explore how probabilistic reasoning under coherence is related to model-theoretic probabilistic reasoning and to default reasoning in System P. In particular, we show that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic logic with concepts from default reasoning. Moreover, we show that probabilistic reasoning under coherence is a generalization of default reasoning in System P. That is, we provide a new probabilistic semantics for System P, which neither uses infinitesimal probabilities nor atomic bound (or bi…

Probabilistic Logic under Coherence, Model-Theoretic Probabilistic Logic, and Default Reasoning

2001

We study probabilistic logic under the viewpoint of the coherence principle of de Finetti. In detail, we explore the relationship between coherence-based and model-theoretic probabilistic logic. Interestingly, we show that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic logic with concepts from default reasoning. Crucially, we even show that probabilistic reasoning under coherence is a probabilistic generalization of default reasoning in system P. That is, we provide a new probabilistic semantics for system P, which is neither based on infinitesimal probabilities nor on atomic-bound (or also big-stepped) probabil…

On the Consistent Use of VaR in Portfolio Performance Evaluation: A Cautionary Note

2010

The portfolio performance measures based on the Value-at-Risk (VaR) concept have gained widespread popularity and are often used in empirical studies. Unfortunately, we have noticed that in majority of empirical studies a VaR-based performance measure is used inconsistently. The goal of this paper is, therefore, to emphasize how to consistently use VaR in portfolio performance evaluation. We also elaborate on a simple framework that allows to derive a general formula for a portfolio performance measure which is not limited to the use of VaR-based reward and risk measures, but is valid for all reward and risk measures that satisfy a few plausible properties.

Thermodynamic approach of supercontinuum generation

2009

International audience; This paper is aimed at providing an overview on recent theoretical and experimental works in which a thermodynamic description of the incoherent regime of supercontinuum generation has been formulated. On the basis of the wave turbulence theory, we show that this highly nonlinear and quasi-continuous-wave regime of supercontinuum generation is characterized by two different phenomena. (i) A process of optical wave thermalization ruled by the four-wave mixing effects: The spectral broadening inherent to supercontinuum generation is shown to result from the natural tendency of the optical field to reach its thermodynamic equilibrium state, i. e., the state of maximum n…

Derived categories of irreducible projective curves of arithmetic genus one

2006

We investigate the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on irreducible singular projective curves of arithmetic genus one. A description of the group of exact auto-equivalences and the set of all $t$ -structures of this category is given. We describe the moduli space of stability conditions, obtain a complete classification of all spherical objects in this category and show that the group of exact auto-equivalences acts transitively on them. Harder–Narasimhan filtrations in the sense of Bridgeland are used as our main technical tool.

Conjunction and Disjunction Among Conditional Events

2017

We generalize, in the setting of coherence, the notions of conjunction and disjunction of two conditional events to the case of n conditional events. Given a prevision assessment on the conjunction of two conditional events, we study the set of coherent extensions for the probabilities of the two conditional events. Then, we introduce by a progressive procedure the notions of conjunction and disjunction for n conditional events. Moreover, by defining the negation of conjunction and of disjunction, we show that De Morgan’s Laws still hold. We also show that the associative and commutative properties are satisfied. Finally, we examine in detail the conjunction for a family \(\mathcal F\) of t…
