Analysis of thin high-k and silicide films by means of heavy ion time-of-flight forward-scattering spectrometry

2006

The use of forward scattered heavy incident ions in combination with a time-of-flight-energy telescope provides a powerful tool for the analysis of very thin (5–30 nm) films. This is because of greater stopping powers and better detector energy resolution for heavier ions than in conventional He-RBS. Because of the forward scattering angle, the sensitivity is greatly enhanced, thus reducing the ion beam induced desorption during the analysis of very thin films. The drawback of forward scattering angle is the limited mass separation for target elements. We demonstrate the performance of the technique with the analysis of 25 nm thick NiSi films and atomic layer deposited 6 nm thick HfxSiyOz f…

A Planar Generator for a Wave Energy Converter

2019

This article presents a permanent magnet planar translational generator which is able to exploit multiple modes of sea wave energy extraction. Linear electrical generators have recently been studied for the exploitation of sea wave energy, but, to the best of our knowledge, no synchronous planar translational generator has been proposed. In this article, to maximize the energy extraction, we have considered all the potential modes of motion due to wave excitation and included them within the mathematical model of the proposed system. The principle of operation of the generator can be summarized as follows: the moving part (translator) of the generator is driven from the sea waves and induce…

Mass calibration of the energy axis in ToF- E elastic recoil detection analysis

2016

We report on procedures that we have developed to mass-calibrate the energy axis of ToF-E histograms in elastic recoil detection analysis. The obtained calibration parameters allow one to transform the ToF-E histogram into a calibrated ToF-M histogram.

Control flow strategy in a receiver coil for nuclear magnetic resonance for imaging

2020

A mathematical discussion is introduced to describe the receiver coil characterizing a nuclear magnetic resonance for imaging, starting from a general shape of the conductor. A set of different inductance calculations have been introduced, varying the shape of the conductor. The inductance calculation led to a general expression of the magnetic field of a single coil characterized by a rectangular shape. A dynamic model of the receiver coil has been developed to represent the natural frequencies that characterize the operational bandwidth. A nonstationary control strategy is implemented to make a real time changing of the operational bandwidth. The frequency response of the coil generates …

Simulations on time-of-flight ERDA spectrometer performance

2016

The performance of a time-of-flight spectrometer consisting of two timing detectors and an ionization chamber energy detector has been studied using Monte Carlo simulations for the recoil creation and ion transport in the sample and detectors. The ionization chamber pulses have been calculated using Shockley-Ramo theorem and the pulse processing of a digitizing data acquisition setup has been modeled. Complete time-of-flight–energy histograms were simulated under realistic experimental conditions. The simulations were used to study instrumentation related effects in coincidence timing and position sensitivity, such as background in time-of-flight–energy histograms. Corresponding measurement…

Oxy-nitrides characterization with a new ERD-TOF system

2017

Abstract A new time-of-flight (TOF) camera was installed on Elastic Recoil Detection (ERD) measurement setup on the Tandem Accelerator at Universite de Montreal. The camera consists of two timing detectors, developed and built by the Jyvaskyla group, that use a thin carbon foil and microchannel plates (MCP) to produce the start and stop signals. The position of the first detector is fixed at 18 cm from the target, while the position of the second detector can be varied between 50 and 90 cm from the first detector. This allows to increase time resolution by increasing the distance between the time-of-flight detectors or to increase solid angle by decreasing the distance. Moving the detector …

Computer-aided analysis and design procedure for rotating induction machine magnetic circuits and windings

2018

The aim of this study is to present a new, accurate, and user-friendly software procedure for the analysis and rapid design of rotating induction machine windings, considering both the electric and the magnetic specifications of the machine itself. This procedure is a valid aid for quick first stage design without the necessity of using finite element method (FEM)-based design procedures. FEM can be used in a second design phase in order to refine the first stage results. The design procedure is hereafter outlined and some examples show its capability.

A North American ammonite fauna from the late Middle Turonian of Vaucluse and Gard, southern France: the Romaniceras mexicanum, Prionocyclus hyatti a…

2016

Abstract An unusual, exotic, ammonite fauna including Romaniceras mexicanum Jones, 1938, Prionocyclus hyatti (Stanton, 1894) and Coilopoceras cf. springeri Hyatt, 1903 is recorded from the late Middle Turonian of Vaucluse and Gard, southern France. It is the first record of this ammonite association outside the Gulf Coast region and the Western Interior of the United States of North America. Up to present, these species were considered as endemic to the Western Interior sea-way. The migration of numerous ammonites from North America to western Europe during the late Middle Turonian suggests it is linked to a transgressive event or to a short sea-level high.

Neighbouring plants and perception of predation risk modulate winter browsing by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

2018

The presence of neighbouring plants and predation risk can affect trophic interactions between plants and herbivores. We hypothesized that the relative preference for neighbouring species would determine winter herbivory and that predation risk would modulate browsing pressure. We tested these hypotheses using feeding trials in two regions with high white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann, 1780)) densities: Outaouais and Anticosti Island (Quebec, Canada). In each, we selected a species of interest and compared browsing rates and time spent foraging with neighbours relatively preferred or avoided. In a subexperiment, we included coyote (Canis latrans Say, 1823) urine to test f…

Algorithmic Approach for Slot Filling Factors Determination in Electrical Machines

2018

In several industrial sectors, such as electric and hybrid traction, the demand for increasingly efficient and high power density electrical machines has grown considerably over the last few years. The improvement of slot filling factor of the electrical machines is an useful provision to satisfy this request. In particular, this topic has been the subject of interest for the industrial sector in recent years, since the technology of winding processes have evolved and allow an economically sustainable realization of windings with an ordered structure rather than randomly. The winding phase must be supported by an accurate design process in which it is possible to evaluate the maximum slot f…
