Subparsec Polarimetric Radio Observations of 3C 120: A Close‐up Look at Superluminal Motion
1998
We present two-epoch polarimetric images of the radio galaxy 3C 120 obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array at 22 and 43 GHz. Because of the proximity of 3C 120 (z = 0.033), the 43 GHz observations allow us to observe superluminal motions with the highest resolution achieved to date, 0.07 h-1 pc. Up to ten different superluminal components, with velocities between 2.3 and 5.4 h-1c, can be observed in this active source, with approximately monthly ejections of new components. Polarization is observed in several components and at both frequencies, with peaks in the linearly polarized flux not always coincident with the peaks in total intensity. The orientation of the magnetic field is obse…
The lowest β-vibrational phonon in the second minimum of 236,238U
1982
Vibrational exci tat ions of f i ss ion isomers have d i r ec t l y been observed for the f i r s t time using conversion electron spectroscopy. A new experimental setup has been developed whidh allows the measurement of prompt conversion electrons from electromagnetic t ransi t ions in delayed coincidence with the f i ss ion decay of the isomer. The large amount of low energy a-electrons was suppressed by special geometrical arrangement of the detectors in the magnetic f i e l d of the solenoid.
Disentangling boson peaks and Van Hove singularities in a model glass
2018
Using the example of a two-dimensional macroscopic model glass in which the interparticle forces can be precisely measured, we obtain strong hints for resolving a controversy concerning the origin of the anomalous enhancement of the vibrational spectrum in glasses (boson peak). Whereas many authors attribute this anomaly to the structural disorder, some other authors claim that the short-range order, leading to washed-out Van Hove singularities, would cause the boson-peak anomaly. As in our model system, the disorder-induced and shortrange--order-induced features can be completely separated, we are able to discuss the controversy about the boson peak in real glasses in a new light. Our find…
E1 andE2/E0 form factors and strength distributions fromSi28(e,e’p) andSi28(e,e’α) coincidence scattering
1986
A model-independent multipole analysis of $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$(e,e'p) and $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$(e,e'\ensuremath{\alpha}) coincidence data, taken at three momentum transfers 0.39lql0.68 ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, yields both E1 and E2/E0 form factors and the respective multipole strength distributions in the giant-resonance region of $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$ (${E}_{x}$=14--22 MeV). While the deduced E1 strength agrees well with previous results, the total extracted E2/E0 strength is about twice the value found with isoscalar projectiles indicating the presence of large isovector E2/E0 contributions in the region of the isoscalar E2/E0 giant resonances.
Reactor antineutrino detection in Double Chooz experiment: Techniques for background reduction
2014
Abstract A crucial task for the Double Chooz reactor antineutrino experiment is the thorough study of the different backgrounds in the detector. Newly developed background reduction techniques minimize the impact of the backgrounds on our sensitivity. Moreover, only a precision and accuracy measurement of the residual background would allow to measure the mixing angle θ 13 with high precision. Neutrino coincidence signals are imitated by signals produced in several others physics processes: accidental coincidences of single events (accidental background), as well as correlated events induced by cosmic muons, including stopping muons, fast neutrons and spallation isotopes Li 9 /He 8 . The Do…
Level structure of170Er observed in the decay of the 2.76 min170Ho
1978
TheΒ−-decay of the longer-lived170Ho isomer produced through the170Er(n, p)170Ho reaction has been investigated by using a versastile detector and coincidence equipment. The half-life andΒ−-decay energy were determined to beT1/2=2.76±0.05 min andQβ =3.85±0.15 MeV, respectively. In addition to the ground state band and some higher energy levels, the proposed level scheme of170Er contains 11 states between 1.0 and 1.6 MeV (6 new ones), which are connected mutually by previously unknown low-energy transitions. Spin and/or parity assignments based mainly on coincidence data and multipolarity determinations are suggested for most of these states. By using systematic considerations and the nuclea…
Levels of118Sn populated in the decay of118In and118Sb isomers
1970
Gamma-rays in the disintegration of 5.0 s (1+), 8.5 s (7−, 8−), and 4.4 min (4+, 5+)118In isomers and of 3.5 min (1+) and 5.1 h (8−)118Sb isomers have been investigated using Ge(Li) detectors and Ge(Li)-NaI(Tl) coincidence spectrometers. The decay schemes of these isomers have been constructed incorporating 17 levels in the product nucleus,118Sn, at the following energies (in keV): 0 (0+), 1229.5 (2+), 1757.5 (0+), 2043.1 (2+), 2056.4 (0+), 2280.3 (4+), 2321.3 (5−), 2326.4 (1+, 2+), 2402.7 (4+), 2488.8 (4+), 2496.5 (0+), 2575.2 (7−), 2677.3, 2733.7 (2+), 2929.8, 2963.5 (4+), and 3137.1 (0+). The structure of118Sn is briefly discussed in view of results from recent quasiparticle-model calcul…
The nuclear structure of 229Th
2002
Abstract The γ -rays following the β − decay of 229 Ac have been investigated by means of γ -ray singles and γγ -coincidence measurements using Ge detectors. Multipolarities of 40 transitions in 229 Th have been established by measuring conversion electrons with a mini-orange electron spectrometer. The half-lives of the 146.35, 164.53 and 261.96 keV levels have been measured using the advanced time delayed βγγ (t) method. The low-lying states in 229 Th and observed transition rates have been interpreted within the quasiparticle–phonon model with inclusion of Coriolis coupling. Two octupole correlated parity partner bands, with K π =5/2 ± and K π =3/2 ± , were identified in 229 Th.
The deformedN=60 nucleus 41 101 Nb
1991
The β− decay of101Zr has been investigated at the fission-product separators JOSEF and LOHENGRIN. The half-life of101Zr has been determined to 2.5(1) s and a level scheme for101Nb has been established fromγ ray singles as well as X/3-γ and γ—γ coincidence measurements. Conversion coefficients for transitions in101Nb and level half-lives between 10 ps and 2 ns have been determined. Three rotational bands are identified among the low-lying levels with band heads at 0 keV, 206 keV and 208 keV. The bands are probably based on the Nilsson configurations [422 5/2+], [301 3/2−] and [303 5/2−], respectively. The deformation has been determined to βq=0.40(4) and 0.41(8) for the ground state band and…
Shape coexistence near the double-midshell nucleus 111Rh
1998
The decay of 111Ru obtained from fast on-line chemical and mass separation has been investigated by β-γ-t and γ-γ coincidence techniques. Earlier spin and parity assignments of 111Rh levels based on extrapolations of level systematics are confirmed. In particular, the K=1/2 intruder band is supported by the hindrance of E2 transitions between deformed and spherical states and enhancement of intraband E2 transitions. The excitation energies of intruder band members in Rh isotopes show a minimum at 109Rh64, with two neutrons less than 111Rh at the N=66 midshell. This trend, which differs from the one in the higher-Z neighbouring elements Ag and Cd with minima at N=66, follows the evolution of…
