[Background] Low-temperature growth and fermentation of wine yeast can enhance wine aroma and make them highly desirable traits for the industry. Elucidating response to cold in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is, therefore, of paramount importance to select or genetically improve new wine strains. As most enological traits of industrial importance in yeasts, adaptation to low temperature is a polygenic trait regulated by many interacting loci.

In response to different adverse conditions, most eukaryotic organisms, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, downregulate protein synthesis through the phosphorylation of eIF2α (eukaryotic initiation factor 2α) by Gcn2, a highly conserved protein kinase. Gcn2 also controls the translation of Gcn4, a transcription factor involved in the induction of amino acid biosynthesis enzymes. Here, we have studied the functional role of Gcn2 and Gcn2-regulating proteins, in controlling translation during temperature downshifts of TRP1 and trp1 yeast cells. Up to 80% of the cost of vaccination programmes is due to the cold chain problem (that is, keeping vaccines cold). Inexpensive, biocompatible additives to slow down the degradation of virus particles would address the problem. Here we propose and characterize additives that, already at very low concentrations, improve the storage time of adenovirus type 5. The temperature dependence (300 to 10 K) of the electronic absorption spectra of the cobalt chromophore in bovine superoxide dismutase (SOD) having the native Zn(II) ion selectivity replaced by Co(II) has been investigated in four different derivatives: Cu(II),Co(II) SOD, N3(-)-Cu(II), Co(II) SOD, Cu(I),Co(II) SOD, and E,Co(II) SOD in which the copper ion has been selectively removed. Purpose: To examine the effects of local cooling on mechanical properties of the quadriceps muscle in healthy subjects. Subjects: Thirty-nine healthy subjects (27 women, 12 men, mean age 39, range 20e62) volunteered. Methods: A cold gel pack was applied to the quadriceps muscle for 20 min. Properties were quantified by analyzing the frequency (tension), decrement (elasticity) and stiffness of damped oscillations and the compliance of the muscle before, immediately after and after 15-min after cooling. Effects of combined hand-arm vibration and cold on skin temperature

Under laboratory conditions 14 healthy male subjects were exposed to hand-arm vibration (ahzw = 6.3 m/s2) at different air temperatures (5 degrees, 12 degrees, 18 degrees and 25 degrees C). Static load (grip force 15 N, push force 40 N) was kept constant. Finger tip temperature as an indirect criterion of the peripheral blood circulation was measured. Objectives: Exposure to ambient temperature can affect mortality levels for days or weeks following exposure, making modelling such effects in regression analysis of daily time-series data complex. Methods: We propose a new approach involving a multi-lag segmented approximation to account for the non-linear effect of temperature and the use of two different penalised spline bases to model the distributed lag of both heat and cold exposure. Compared with standard splines, the novel penalised framework is more flexible at short lags where change in coefficients is greatest, and selection of the maximum lag appears substantially less important in determining the overall pattern of the effect. …
