The impact of baroreflex function on endogenous pain control: a microneurography study.

The interaction between sympathetic vasoconstrictor activity to muscles [muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), burst frequency (BF) and burst incidence (BI)] and different stress and somatosensory stimuli is still unclear. The efficacy of acupuncture in human pain models: A randomized, controlled, double-blinded study

Acupuncture is frequently used to treat pain, although data supporting the analgesic efficacy from placebo-controlled studies is sparse. In order to get evidence for acupuncture analgesia we performed a study with 2 well-recognized experimental human pain models - the cold-pressor (CP) test and intradermal capsaicin injection. Fifty healthy men were included. Our study compared Traditional Chinese Medicine-based acupuncture to sham acupuncture with Streitberger placebo needles in a randomized, controlled, double-blinded trial. Neurogenic hyperalgesia versus painful hypoalgesia: two distinct mechanisms of neuropathic pain

Patients with sensory disturbances of painful and non-painful character show distinct changes in touch and/or pain sensitivity. The patterns of sensory changes were compared to those of human surrogate models of neuropathic pain to assess the underlying mechanisms. A family-based investigation of cold pain tolerance

In the present study the question was addressed whether sensitivity to experimental pain stimuli differs between families, which are previously characterized by the degree of cold tolerance (very insensitive or very sensitive) of one family member. A total of 232 healthy medical students were screened for cold pain tolerance employing a cold pressor test. Subsequently 50 of them were investigated in detail under laboratory conditions. Abolished laser-evoked potentials and normal blink reflex in midlateral medullary infarction.

We investigated two patients presenting with the rare finding of almost isolated hemianalgesia with a sensory level on the contralateral side sparing the face. Clinical findings, electrophysiological studies (absent laser-evoked pain-related somatosensory potentials, normal electrically evoked somatosensory potentials, magnetically evoked potentials, and blink reflexes), and magnetic resonance imaging showed the ventrolateral medullar tegmentum containing the spinothalamic tract to be affected by lacunar infarction. The blink reflex R2 component was unimpaired in both patients.

INTRODUCTION This study examined the recovery patterns of hormonal, blood lipid, and hematological profiles following strenuous physical loading, continuous extreme cold exposure and energy deficit induced by a North Pole expedition. METHODS Seven men completed an 850-km North Pole expedition in temperatures varying from -3 degrees C to -47 degrees C. Daily energy intake was approximately 23 MJ x d(-1) and was composed of approximately 60% fat.
