Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy and Diabetes: A Scoping Review

Although cancer and diabetes are common diseases, the relationship between diabetes, neuropathy and the risk of developing peripheral sensory neuropathy while or after receiving chemotherapy is uncertain. In this review, we highlight the effects of chemotherapy on the onset or progression of neuropathy in diabetic patients. We searched the literature in Medline and Scopus, covering all entries until 31 January 2021. Small-amplitude collective modes of a finite-size unitary Fermi gas in deformed traps

We have investigated collective breathing modes of a unitary Fermi gas in deformed harmonic traps. The ground state is studied by the Superfluid Local Density Approximation (SLDA) and small-amplitude collective modes are studied by the iterative Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA). The results illustrate the evolutions of collective modes of a small system in traps from spherical to elongated or pancake deformations. For small spherical systems, the influences of different SLDA parameters are significant, and, in particular, a large pairing strength can shift up the oscillation frequency of collective mode. Fruit quality and flavor compounds before and after commercial harvest of the late-ripening ‘Fairtime’ peach cultivar

ABSTRACT In this work quality of tree ripe and commercial ripe ‘Fairtime’ peach fruit was evaluated during fruit maturation and storage. Quality parameters and volatile fraction were monitored at intervals of 7-15 days from pit hardening until 10 days after commercial harvest and after 7, 17 and 24 days of refrigeration. In fruit on the tree, weight increased quadratically, diameter and peel color increased linearly, whereas flesh firmness decreased linearly. Gene Expression Analysis of Cold and Freeze Stress in Baker's Yeast

ABSTRACT We used mRNA differential display to assess yeast gene expression under cold or freeze shock stress conditions. We found both up- and down-regulation of genes, although repression was more common. We identified and sequenced several cold-induced genes exhibiting the largest differences. We confirmed, by Northern blotting, the specificity of the response for TPI1 , which encodes triose-phosphate isomerase; ERG10 , the gene for acetoacetyl coenzyme A thiolase; and IMH1 , which encodes a protein implicated in protein transport. Microscopic calculation of the LSP detection rates for the 71Ga, 73Ge and 127I dark-matter detectors

Abstract We have investigated the nuclear-structure details of the cross sections for the elastic scattering of Lightest Supersymmetric Particles (LSPs) from the promising dark-matter detectors 71 Ga, 73 Ge and 127 I. The associated LSP detection sensitivities have been obtained by a folding procedure for several recently proposed SUSY models with different scalar and axial-vector characteristics. For the nuclear problem, a realistic microscopic Hamiltonian has been used within realistic model spaces. Dark-matter detection by elastic and inelastic LSP scattering on 129Xe and 131Xe

Abstract We calculate the nuclear matrix elements involved in the elastic and inelastic scattering of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) on the 129Xe and 131Xe dark-matter detector nuclei. This is the first time when both channels are addressed within the same unified microscopic nuclear framework, namely we perform large-scale shell-model calculations with a realistic two-body interaction to produce the participant nuclear wave functions. These wave functions successfully reproduce the spectroscopic data on the relevant magnetic moments and M1 decays. Cryogenic 35GHz pulse ENDOR probehead accommodating large sample sizes: Performance and applications.

The construction and performance of a cryogenic 35GHz pulse electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) probehead for large samples is presented. The resonator is based on a rectangular TE(102) cavity in which the radio frequency (rf) B(2)-field is generated by a two turn saddle ENDOR coil crossing the resonator along the sample axis with minimal distance to the sample tube. An rf power efficiency factor is used to define the B(2)-field strength per square-root of the transmitted rf power over the frequency range 2-180MHz. New constraints on Lorentz invariance violation from the neutron electric dipole moment

We propose an original test of Lorentz invariance in the interaction between a particle spin and an electromagnetic field and report on a first measurement using ultracold neutrons. We used a high sensitivity neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) spectrometer and searched for a direction dependence of a nEDM signal leading to a modulation of its magnitude at periods of 12 and 24 hours. We constrain such a modulation to $d_{12} < 15 \times 10^{-25} \ e\,{\rm cm}$ and $d_{24} < 10 \times 10^{-25} \ e\,{\rm cm}$ at 95~\% C.L. The result translates into a limit on the energy scale for this type of Lorentz violation effect at the level of ${\cal E}_{LV} > 10^{10}$~GeV.

Joining by plastic deformation

Abstract As the scale and complexity of products such as aircraft and cars increase, demand for new functional processes to join mechanical parts grows. The use of plastic deformation for joining parts potentially offers improved accuracy, reliability and environmental safety as well as creating opportunities to design new products through joining dissimilar materials. This paper aims to provide an overview of the state of the art in such joining processes, including cold welding, friction stir welding, self-pierce riveting, mechanical clinching and joining by forming. The paper includes description of the mechanism of joint formation, and analysis of joint performance and applicability.
