The Antarctic yeast Candida sake: Understanding cold metabolism impact on wine

Current winemaking trends include low-temperature fermentations and using non-Saccharomyces yeasts as the most promising tools to produce lower alcohol and increased aromatic complexity wines. Here we explored the oenological attributes of a C. sake strain, H14Cs, isolated in the sub-Antarctic region. As expected, the cold sea water yeast strain showed greater cold growth, Na+-toxicity resistance and freeze tolerance than the S. cerevisiae QA23 strain, which we used as a commercial wine yeast control. Enhanced enzymatic activity of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase from the cryophilic Saccharomyces kudriavzevii

During the evolution of the different species classified within the Saccharomyces genus, each one has adapted to live in different environments. One of the most important parameters that have influenced the evolution of Saccharomyces species is the temperature. Here we have focused on the study of the ability of certain species as Saccharomyces kudriavzevii to grow at low temperatures, in contrast to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The structure of the title compound, 2C(4)H(9)N(2)O(3)(+).C(2)O(4)(2-), which has been determined by X-ray diffraction, contains discrete glycylglycine (HGly-Gly)(+) cations in general positions and oxalate anions which lie across centres of inversion. Although the geometry of the (HGly-Gly)(+) cation is not significantly different compared with other structures containing this residue, a few changes in conformation are observed which indicate the presence of molecular interactions. The molecular network in the crystal consists of one nearly linear O-H...O, five N-H...O and two weak C-H.O hydrogen bonds.

Results of heart retransplantation: subanalysis of the Spanish Heart Transplant Registry

Heart retransplantation (ReHT) is controversial in the current era. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze the results of ReHT in Spain. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort analysis from the Spanish Heart Transplant Registry from 1984 to 2018. Data were collected on donors, recipients, surgical procedure characteristics, immunosuppression, and survival. The main outcome was posttransplant all-cause mortality or need for ReHT. We studied differences in survival according to indication for ReHT, the time interval between transplants and era of ReHT. Determination of Mercury in Milk by Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence: A Green Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Experiment

Green analytical chemistry principles were introduced to undergraduate students in a laboratory experiment focused on determining the mercury concentration in cow and goat milk. In addition to traditional goals, such as accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and limits of detection in method selection and development, attention was paid to the evaluation of green parameters of the analytical methods. Milk samples were evaluated by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) and the wastes were minimized by co-precipitation with Fe(III).
