Decentralization and heterogeneity in complex adaptative systems
2015
Purpose – Following a bacterial-based modeling approach, the authors want to model and analyze the impact of both decentralization and heterogeneity on group behavior and collective learning. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Inspired by bacterial conjugation, the authors have defined an artificial society in which agents’ strategies adapt to changes in resources location, allowing migration, and survival in a dynamic sugarscape-like scenario. To study the impact of these variables the authors have simulated a scenario in which resources are limited and localized. The authors also have defined three constraints in genetic information processing (inhibiti…
Co-teaching as a context for teachers' professional learning and joint knowledge construction
2012
Abstract The study examined two primary teachers' professional learning and joint knowledge construction in the context of co-teaching. The teachers narrated their learning as a collaborative process with serendipitous origins. Shared knowledge construction was crucial in the learning process, as was implementing the resulting new ideas in practice. It is concluded that experiences of co-teaching may support teachers in meeting their professional responsibilities effectively. Professional development programmes need to be sensitive to teachers' individual and collaborative learning experiences to be able better to support them in the natural context of those experiences in particular local …
Social-cognitive outcomes of teachers’ engagement in learning communities
2014
Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to seek to investigate Etienne Wenger's theory of social learning in a community of practice by modeling two simultaneous aspects of teachers’ collaborative learning: their engagement in close-knit internal groupings and engagement with colleagues that work externally to the core group. These two learning processes are related to two social-cognitive outcomes: teachers’ organizational commitment and their sense of impact.Design/methodology/approach– The study investigated a field sample of 246 individual teachers from ten Finnish primary schools. Hypotheses were developed and tested by using multiple regression and structural equation modeling.Findings–…
Expert‑panel accreditation evaluation‑practices: an autoethnographic case study of the Community of Madrid
2017
Accreditation is defined by the European Higher Education Area quality‑assurance agencies as a key element in quality management and continuous improvement in university teaching‑learning processes, and is an institutional practice that started to be developed in 2014 in Spain. This article illustrates the case of the Community of Madrid Quality Agency, as case study analysis through my experience as a panel member for the accreditation of higher‑education qualifications. Methodologically, it is based on an autoethnographic approach and uses the theory of symbolic interactionism to reveal and analyse the evaluative process and culture. For this purpose, two analytical axes were drawn: stude…
mCLT: an application for collaborative learning on a mobile telephone
2005
Mobile technologies offer new opportunities for distance learning and enable people to collaborate anywhere. This paper introduces an innovative mobile platform for computer-supported collaborative learning in which traditional methodologies of collaboration have been improved, based on 3rd-generation mobile telephones. Students can collect and share live data immediately, anywhere and at any time. This enables them to play an active role in the knowledge-building process. The mCLT is potentially an application for ubiquitous collaborative learning.
Contrasting Automatic and Manual Group Formation: A Case Study in a Software Engineering Postgraduate Course
2021
This paper proposes the comparison of a group formation approach based on an evolutionary algorithm with a manual approach performed by an instructor with ten years of experience on this task. The groups were created based on the professional, psychological, and experience profile of each student. The results obtained demonstrated the algorithm’s potential, reaching an average similarity of \(83.46\%\) with the groups formed manually by the instructor.
Contribution of Multi-Agent Systems and Fuzzy logic to support tutors in Learning Communities
2016
The growing importance of online training has put emphasis on the role of remote tutoring. A whole new area of research, dedicated to environment for human learning (EHL), is emerging. We are concerned with this field. More specifically, we will focus on the monitoring of learners. The instrumentation and observation of learners activities by exploiting interaction traces in the EHL and the development of indicators can help tutors to monitor activities of learners and support them in their collaborative learning process. Indeed, in a learning situation, the teacher needs to observe the behavior of learners in order to build an idea about their involvement, preferences and learning styles so…
Human Technology : Toward the Second Decade
2015
The inaugural issue of Human Technology: An Interdisciplinary Journal on Humans in ICT Environments was published in 2005. The 10 volumes of two to three issues comprise well over 2000 pages. Upon starting as editor in chief in January 2015, I browsed through the archives and noticed that just over 100 articles had been published in the journal. Examining these titles, it is evident that they address a wide variety of topics. Nevertheless, four broad themes emerge: The user of technology, with such foci as user experience, user characteristics, usability, user interface, and, on a more theoretical level, cognition; The learner in a technological environment, covering aspects such as inf…
