Educational Perspectives on Scripting CSCL
2007
This chapter discusses different educational approaches to collaboration scripts. When carefully designed, scripts can push learners to that kind of situations in which meaningful interaction can take place. However, many conditions need to be met for this to happen in authentic classroom contexts. One of the biggest educational challenges in instructional design of computer-supported collaboration scripts is to better integrate them into wider social planes such as overall classroom activities. Scripts could also be considered as contextual and situated resources in collaborative learning environments. Furthermore, a challenge for future research is to explore how external scripts can be g…
Secure Collaborative Learning Practices and Mobile Technology
2008
During the past few years, mobile technologies have become common in everyday life. Almost everyone carry some kind of mobile technological equipment with him or her, for example a personal digital assistant (PDA), a mobile phone, a multimedia player, such as an iPod, or a laptop computer. The use of these equipments is not limited only to workplaces, schools or homes. Particularly useful information and communication technologies (ICTs) are in educational settings. Especially wireless networks and laptop computers may promote many useful practices of collaborative learning (Cutshall, Changchit, & Elwood, 2006; Jones, Holmfeld, & Lindström, 2006). On the one hand, the use of mobile …
Scripting Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning
2010
In this chapter, we will present a review of theoretical and empirical analyses of Web-based collaboration processes used during a scripted university course. The results refer to a design-based study that involved first-year teacher-education students (N = 30) studying pedagogy over a period of three months. The intervention involved structuring the subjects’ collaborative actions with three different pedagogical scripts. According to the findings, the scripts guided students’ activities by helping them find resources for knowledge construction and work together through a series of steps. However, there were variations among groups in terms of quality of collaboration, and the students mos…

An Agents and Artifacts Approach to Distributed Data Mining
2013
This paper proposes a novel Distributed Data Mining (DDM) approach based on the Agents and Artifacts paradigm, as implemented in CArtAgO [9], where artifacts encapsulate data mining tools, inherited from Weka, that agents can use while engaged in collaborative, distributed learning processes. Target hypothesis are currently constrained to decision trees built with J48, but the approach is flexible enough to allow different kinds of learning models. The twofold contribution of this work includes: i) JaCA-DDM: an extensible tool implemented in the agent oriented programming language Jason [2] and CArtAgO [10,9] to experiment DDM agent-based approaches on different, well known training sets. A…
Trust: the basis of the collaborative interaction
2005
This contribution focuses on the role of trust in developing collaborative learning. Both in face-to-face and online environments, four types of learning interactions are required: interaction with resources, with teachers, with peers and with an interface. Collaborative interaction, and therefore collaborative learning, requires people to trust one another. Several factors, such as shared social norms, repeated interactions and shared experiences, have been suggested to facilitate the development of interpersonal trust; as far as temporary teams are concerned, the concept of "swift trust" has been proposed. It is suggested that collaborative online interactions - compared to face-to-face o…
Collaborative learning in EFL activity books
2016
Koska yhteistoiminnall…
SpringCon : a collaborative teaching material package for EFL teaching in grades 7-9
2018
Pedagogisten suuntausten laajassa kirjossa on yhteistoiminnallinen oppiminen (eng. collaborative learning) varteenotettava vaihtoehto näiden taitojen edistämiseksi perusopetuksessa, myöskin kieltenopetuksessa. Koska yhteistoiminnallisen oppimisen periaatteide…
Designing and investigating pedagogical scripts to facilitate computer-supported collaborative learning
2008
Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) appears to provide a promising social approach to foster learning. On the other hand, recent studies have indicated that when learners are left on their own, it is often difficult for teams to engage in productive interactions. Therefore, the use of collaboration scripts as instructional support has been presented as a possibility to trigger productive collaborative activities. This study provides knowledge of collaboration scripts as a pedagogical method to facilitate group processes in virtual environments in authentic educational contexts. The findings indicate that scripts as external support can help students proceed in solving learning …
Case-based portraits of contrasting micro-interaction processes during online assessment of collaborative problem solving
2017
This study recognizes the role and the quality of social aspects in collaborative problem solving (CPS) processes and outcomes. The aim of this study, relying on multiple data and phases of analysis, is to explore and visualise, through contrasting case-based portraits, how micro-interaction processes at pair level evolve during CPS assessments in an online environment. The assessment is designed for a student pair in the STEM domain. The results show that in despite students’ similar CPS performance scores, variations in micro-interactions occurred across pairs. It is expected that studying these patterns at pair level may provide new insights into CPS processes and so to support acquiring…
