Lensing and dynamics of ultracompact bosonic stars

Spherically symmetric bosonic stars are one of the few examples of gravitating solitons that are known to form dynamically, via a classical process of (incomplete) gravitational collapse. As stationary solutions of the Einstein--Klein-Gordon or the Einstein--Proca theory, bosonic stars may also become sufficiently compact to develop light rings and hence mimic, in principle, gravitational-wave observational signatures of black holes (BHs). Comment on `Critical scalar field collapse in AdS$_3$: an analytical approach'

We comment on the derivation of an analytical solution presented in arXiv:1309.1629, show that it belongs to a family of separable solutions previously constructed in arXiv:gr-qc/0109002, and question its relevance to critical collapse.

Method to compute the stress-energy tensor for a quantized scalar field when a black hole forms from the collapse of a null shell

A method is given to compute the stress-energy tensor for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in a spacetime where a black hole forms from the collapse of a spherically symmetric null shell in four dimensions. Part of the method involves matching the modes for the in vacuum state to a complete set of modes in Schwarzschild spacetime. The other part involves subtracting from the unrenormalized expression for the stress-energy tensor when the field is in the in vacuum state, the corresponding expression when the field is in the Unruh state and adding to this the renormalized stress-energy tensor for the field in the Unruh state. Macroelement Model for the Progressive-Collapse Analysis of Infilled Frames

A new multistrut macromodel for the analysis of the progressive-collapse response of infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frames is presented in this paper. The model consists of three struts: two outer infinitely rigid and resistant struts and one inner fiber-section strut. The inclination of the struts as well as the stress-strain response are modulated by two parameters that are obtained by means of analytical correlations provided in the paper. The latter link the geometric and mechanical properties of an infilled frame to the geometric configuration and mechanical response of the equivalent strut model. An Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé Approach to Collapse Results for First-Order Queries over Embedded Databases

We present a new proof technique for collapse results for first-order queries on databases which are embedded in N or R>o. Our proofs are by means of an explicitly constructed winning strategy for Duplicator in an Ehrenfeucht-FraissE game, and can deal with certain infinite databases where previous, highly involved methods fail. Our main result is that first-order logic has the natural-generic collapse over {N,≤ ,+} for arbitrary (i.e., possibly infinite) databases. Furthermore, a first application of this result shows the natural-generic collapse of first-order logic over {R>o,≤,+} for a certain kind of databases over R>o which consist of a possibly infinite number of regions.

Hydromechanical behaviour of a volcanic ash

This paper presents experimental analysis and numerical modelling aimed at improved understanding and prediction of the hydromechanical behaviour of volcanic ash at various states of saturation. Results from a comprehensive experimental programme are presented in order to characterise the response of the material in terms of matric suction and confining stress changes. The evolution of the yield stress at different suction levels has been quantified. The volumetric response with suction variations allowed the analysis of the collapse-upon-wetting behaviour. Multimessenger search for sources of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos: Initial results for LIGO-Virgo and IceCube

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2014-11-17 We report the results of a multimessenger search for coincident signals from the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave observatories and the partially completed IceCube high-energy neutrino detector, including periods of joint operation between 2007-2010. These include parts of the 2005-2007 run and the 2009-2010 run for LIGO-Virgo, and IceCube's observation periods with 22, 59 and 79 strings. The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES):XI. The highly r-process-enhanced star CS 29497-004

We report an abundance analysis for the highly r-process-enhanced (r-II) star CS 29497-004, a very metal-poor giant with Teff = 5013K and [Fe/H]=-2.85, whose nature was initially discovered in the course of the HERES project. Our analysis is based on high signal-to-noise, high-resolution (R~75000) VLT/UVES spectra and MARCS model atmospheres under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium, and obtains abundance measurements for a total of 46 elements, 31 of which are neutron-capture elements.
