Low cost survey techniques aimed to the Cultural Heritage conservation.
2017
Thanks to SfM (Image Based Modeling) survey techniques, is possible to realize 3D models of every object, in a very short time and with limited economical and training resources, today. These semi-automated SfM software allow users to simply upload photos and follow a mediated workflow, without any complex inner workings of SfM and this can be especially advantageous to users in non-technical fields or to those with limited resources. Every year there is an international Event, #digitalinvasion, that involves the Italian museums and that reckons on to allow to take pictures and video to the whole museum collections. This event is present in Palermo since 2014 and the Engineering first year …
Electrochemical analysis of the first Polish coins using voltammetry of immobilized particles
2017
[EN] A series of 20 denarii from Boleslaus the Brave (992-1025) and Mieszko II Lambert (1025-1034), corresponding to the beginning of the Polish state were studied using the voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) methodology. VIMP experiments, applied to nanosamples of the corrosion layers of the coins in contact with aqueous acetate buffer, provided well-defined responses mainly corresponding to the corrosion products of copper and lead. Such voltammetric responses, combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy experiments performed on the same set of coins, and complemented by focusing ion beam-field emission scanning electron microscope (FIB-FESEM) on silver coins from the 19t…
2013
Although Miguel Parra Abril (Valencia, 1780-Madrid, 1846) is one of the most important Valencian School painters of floral still lifes, this aspect of his work remains little known. The present article addresses this oversight in two ways. First, by offering an overview of his oeuvre as a painter of floral subjects from his student days at the Fine Arts Academy of Valencia through his mature works. Second, by analyzing two heretofore-unpublished floral compositions in relation to his more familiar works, particularly those located in private collections until recent years.Aunque Miguel Parra Abril (Valencia, 1780-Madrid, 1846) es uno de los pintores de flores más importantes de la Escuela v…

Nabrzeżkowate (Heteroptera: Saldidae) Polski – przegląd faunistyczny / Shore bugs (Heteroptera: Saldidae) of Poland – a faunistic review
2022
This paper is a faunistic review of 23 species of the family Saldidae occurring in Poland. The study was based on the original papers relating to the territory of Poland and on materials deposited in several institutions, i.e. University of Opole (UO), Museum and Institute of Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw (ZMPA), and in Nature Collections of the Faculty of Biology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (ZPUAM). Over 4000 specimens preserved at the institutions mentioned above have been examined, identified, or their previous identifications were verified. All the localities (with their UTM coordinates) for each of the 23 species occurring in Poland are listed in alphabetical …
Thilachium madagascariense (Capparaceae), a new species from eastern Madagascar with a key to the species of the genus
2021
SummaryThilachium madagascariense Fici, a small tree characterised by 1-foliolate leaves with articulate petioles, leaf blades elliptic or narrowly obovate with base attenuate and apex acuminate, flowers in groups of 2 – 3 at the top of lateral twigs and a high number of stamens, is described and illustrated from forest habitats of eastern Madagascar. The new species is similar to T. laurifolium Baker, a species endemic to central and eastern Madagascar, differing in the longer leaves with acuminate apex, flowers conferted at the top of lateral twigs, shorter pedicels, higher number of stamens and shorter gynophore. Its affinities are discussed and an updated key is provided for all the spe…
Preservation in Disaster Situations: a case study of the Valvilla Wool Mill Museum, Finland
2013
This article discusses the role of documentation and rescue planning in minimizing collection damages in disaster situations. The topic is surveyed through a case study of a fire that occurred in 2003 at the Valvilla Wool Mill museum in Hyvinkää, in Southern Finland. This incident caused significant damage to the authenticity and integrity of the museum’s archival collection. Both the fire and the extinguishing of the fire caused severe damage to items in the archival collection. Deterioration continued during aftercare, causing serious secondary collection damage because the methods of the first aid and aftercare were spontaneously planned and applied. By using the Valvilla Wool Mill museu…
La dynastie Beurdeley (1818-1895) : entre boutique et atelier. Une histoire du commerce des curiosités et de la création d’objets d’art au XIXe siècle
2019
The Beurdeley dynasty was established in Paris from 1818 to 1895. They were active in the trade of "curiosities" (as antiques were then described) but they also founded a workshop for the manufacture of furniture and gilt bronzes. The study of their business reveals the increasing value devoted to curiosities, the consumption and the circulation of works of art, both antique and modern, the trade and the workshop practices throughout the nineteenth century. The dual activity of dealer and manufacturer is significant and exposes the correlations between the commerce, the development of the taste for old objects following the intense circulation of merchandises triggered by the Revolution, an…
Museum Studies – Bridging Theory and Practice
2021
This book is a handbook for everyone who is interested in museums and the wider cultural and cultural heritage debates. In the spirit of lifelong learning, it aims to connect the humanistic discipline of museum studies with the wider context of society. Museums possess power as safekeepers of our memories. This book will, in its own small way, take part in the discussion of making our past and future memories matter, to show how important it is for us to understand our past. In our contemporary culture it often seems that no time is allowed for this kind of understanding; the constant flow of issues and “must dos” often hinders us from seeing the connections between our past and present. In…
