Dielectric Collimators for Beam Delivery Systems*

2012

Abstract Wakefield generation by the collimation system is known to be a critical linear collider design issue. Optimization of the collimators represents a tradeoff between beam quality (halo reduction) and luminosity reduction. The primary objective is to reduce both short range (resonant) and long range (resistive) deflecting wakefields from collimators that reduce the luminosity of the machine. We consider the CLIC BDS (beam delivery system) and examine the potential for using dielectric rather than highly conducting materials for collimation. We present some examples of the flexibility gained by having control over the permittivity and conductivity of the collimator. We discuss simulation …

Hyperfine and Isotope Shift Measurements Far off Stability by Optical Pumping

1977

In this talk I will review optical pumping (OP) experiments performed by our group to ISOLDE, CERN, in a series of Hg isotopes spanning from mass number 181 to 205 (first results in refs. [1] and [2], final in refs. [3] and [4]. I will then discuss what impact these measurements had on nuclear structure research far off stability and how the results of the latter are retroacting again on the optical work. In particular they ask for isotope shifts (IS) of light even Hg isotopes which we are prepared to measure by laser spectroscopy. Further I would like to communicate briefly first results of optical pumping experiments on “exotic” Rb and Cs isotopes. Finally I will discuss plans for laser s…

Nuclear Modification ofψ′,χc, andJ/ψProduction ind+AuCollisions atsNN=200  GeV

2013

We present results for three charmonia states (psi' chi(c), and J/ psi) in d + Au collisions at vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.35 and root s(NN) = 200 GeV. We find that the modification of the psi' yield relative to that of the J/ psi scales approximately with charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity across p + A, d + Au, and A + A results from the Super Proton Synchrotron and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In large-impact-parameter collisions we observe a similar suppression for the psi' and J/ psi, while in small-impact-parameter collisions the more weakly bound psi' is more strongly suppressed. Owing to the short time spent traversing the Au nucleus, the larger psi' suppressio…

Measurement of theBs0Lifetime in the Exclusive Decay ChannelBs0→J/ψϕ

2005

Using the exclusive decay B-s(0)-->J/psi(mu(+)mu(-))phi(K+K-), we report the most precise single measurement of the B-s(0) lifetime. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 220 pb(-1) collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in 2002-2004. We reconstruct 337 signal candidates, from which we extract the B-s(0) lifetime, tau(B-s(0))=1.444(-0.090)(+0.098)(stat)+/-0.020(sys) ps. We also report a measurement for the lifetime of the B-0 meson using the exclusive decay B-0-->J/psi(mu(+)mu(-))K-*0(892)(K(+)pi(-)). We reconstruct 1370 signal candidates, obtaining tau(B-0)=1.473(-0.050)(+0.052)(stat)+/-0.023(sys) ps, and the ratio of lifetimes, …

Highlights from the COMPASS experiment at CERN. Hadron spectroscopy and excitations

2016

The COMPASS experiment at the CERN-SPS studies the spectrum and the structure of hadrons by scattering high energy hadrons and polarised muons off various fixed targets. Recent results for the hadron programme comprise highlights from different topics. A selective overview is given and, among others, the following results are discussed. The precise determination of the pion polarisability, a long standing puzzle that has been solved now, is presented as well as measurements of radiative widths. The observation of a new narrow axial-vector state, the $a_1(1420)$, as well as deeper insights into the exotic $1^{-+}$-wave, which is under study since decades by several experiments, are discussed…

The ATLAS level-1 trigger: Status of the system and experience from commissioning with cosmic ray muons

2007

The detector at CERN's large hadron collider (LHC) was exposed to proton-proton collisions from beams crossing at 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system will select potentially interesting events in order to reduce this rate to 100- 200 Hz. A trigger decision is made by the Level-1 central trigger processor (CTP) reducing the incoming rate to less than 100 kHz. The Level-1 decision is based on calorimeter information and hits in dedicated muon trigger detectors. The final Level-1 trigger system is currently being installed in the experiment with completion expected in autumn 2007. Cosmic ray data are regularly recorded as an increasing fraction of the trigger system comes online. We present a…

The storage ring magnet of the third muon (g-2) experiment at CERN

1978

The third ( g −2) experiment carried out at CERN required a storage ring magnet with a field as uniform as possible and known with an accuracy of a few parts per million over the whole storage region. Here we describe this magnet, which has a useful aperture of 120 mm horizontally and 80 mm vertically and a diameter of ∼14 m. The various field controls necessary are indicated, and the complex procedure adopted for the shimming work is described. The finally reached homogeneity of the field, averaged in azimuth, was 3 ppm. All the various error sources and field map corrections needed are analysed. Finally, the special aspects of the machine developed for the shimming are described.

Measurement of Azimuthal Anisotropy of Muons from Charm and Bottom Hadrons in pp Collisions at s=13  TeV with the ATLAS Detector

2020

The elliptic flow of muons from the decay of charm and bottom hadrons is measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 150  pb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The muons from heavy-flavor decay are separated from light-hadron decay muons using momentum imbalance between the tracking and muon spectrometers. The heavy-flavor decay muons are further separated into those from charm decay and those from bottom decay using the distance-of-closest-approach to the collision vertex. The measurement is performed for muons in the transverse momentum range 4-7 GeV and pseudorapidity range |η|<2.4. A significant nonzero elliptic anisotro…

Observation of a resonant structure in e+e− → ωη and another in e+e− → ωπ0 at center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV

2021

Abstract Born cross sections for the processes e + e − → ω η and e + e − → ω π 0 have been determined for center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The results obtained in this work are consistent with previous measurements but with improved precision. Two resonant structures are observed. In the e + e − → ω η cross sections, a resonance with a mass of ( 2176 ± 24 ± 3 ) MeV / c 2 and a width of ( 89 ± 50 ± 5 ) MeV is observed with a significance of 6.2σ. Its properties are consistent with the ϕ ( 2170 ) . In the e + e − → ω π 0 cross sections, a resonance denoted Y ( 2040 ) is observed with a significance of more than 10σ. Its mass an…
