Scad-elastic net and the estimation of individual tourism expenditure determinants

This paper introduces the use of scad-elastic net in the assessment of the determinants of individual tourist spending. This technique approaches two main estimation-related issues of primary importance. So far studies of tourism literature have made a wide use of classic regressions, whose results might be affected by multicollinearity. In addition, because of the absence of robust economic theory on tourism behavior, regressor selection is often left to researcher's choice when not driven by non-optimal automatic criteria. Dimensionality Reduction via Regression in Hyperspectral Imagery

This paper introduces a new unsupervised method for dimensionality reduction via regression (DRR). The algorithm belongs to the family of invertible transforms that generalize Principal Component Analysis (PCA) by using curvilinear instead of linear features. DRR identifies the nonlinear features through multivariate regression to ensure the reduction in redundancy between he PCA coefficients, the reduction of the variance of the scores, and the reduction in the reconstruction error. The influence of geography on the spatial agglomeration of production in the European Union

Abstract We investigate the relative impact of geographic features on the location of production in the European Union. Specifically, we attempt to quantify how much of the spatial pattern of GDP can be attributed to exogenous first-nature elements alone and how much can be derived from endogenous second-nature factors. In order to disentangle both effects empirically, we control for second-nature factors. These measurements are expensive and therefore sparse and hard to maintain in time on a regular basis. Abstract Patterns of two Ts, materializing different symmetry groups, were used to explore conditions that would lead to a modulation of the typically observed overestimation of the length of a T's undivided line relative to its divided line. Observers either had to compare the lengths of the lines of one or the other of the Ts in a pattern, or noncorresponding lines between the two Ts. For both tasks alike, the T-illusion was found to be markedly greater with twofold mirror-symmetric 2-T patterns than it usually is with individual Ts. We examined the effects of spatial frequency similarity and dissimilarity on human contour integration under various conditions of uncertainty. Participants performed a temporal 2AFC contour detection task. Spatial frequency jitter up to 3.0 octaves was applied either to background elements, or to contour and background elements, or to none of both. Results converge on four major findings. Methods based on the use of multivariate autoregressive modeling (MVAR) have proved to be an accurate and flexible tool for the estimation of brain functional connectivity. The multivariate approach, however, implies the use of a model whose complexity (in terms of number of parameters) increases quadratically with the number of signals included in the problem. The combination of local orientation collinearity and spatial frequency contrast in contour integration was studied in two experiments using a 2AFC contour detection and discrimination task.
