Optical measurement of the longitudinal ion distribution of bunched ion beams in the ESR

Abstract An optical technique to study the longitudinal distribution of ions in a bunched ion beam circulating in a storage ring is presented. It is based on the arrival-time analysis of photons emitted after collisional excitation of residual gas molecules. The beam-induced fluorescence was investigated in the ultraviolet regime with a channeltron and in the visible region using a photomultiplier tube. Both were applied to investigate the longitudinal shape of bunched and electron-cooled 209Bi80+ ion beams at about 400 MeV/u in the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. Hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion beams: The HypHI project at GSI and fair

The HypHI experiment for precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with induced reactions of stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams is currently under preparation at GSI. The main goal of the HypHI project is to study neutron and proton rich hypernuclei and to measure directly hypernuclear magnetic moments at GSI and FAIR. Production of n-rich Nuclei along the Closed Shell N=126 in the collision 136Xe + 208Pb @E lab =870 MeV

Multi-nucleon transfer reactions are nowadays the only known mean to produce neutron-rich nuclei in the Terra Incognita. The closed-shell region N=126 is crucial for both studying shell-quenching in exotic nuclei and the r-process, being its last "waiting-point". The choice of suitable reactions is challenging and a favorable case is 136Xe+208Pb, near the Coulomb barrier, because their neutron shell-closures play a stabilizing role, favoring the proton-transfer from lead to xenon. In the first week of this conference experimentalists made us familiar with the features of the positron peaks observed in the collision of very heavy ions with atoms. We learned that these peaks are not understandable in terms of known positron production mechanisms like monoenergetic pair decay of excited nuclear levels or the proposed spontaneous positron production in superheavy atoms. Multi-Scale Modeling of Quantum Semiconductor Devices

This review is concerned with three classes of quantum semiconductor equations: Schrodinger models, Wigner models, and fluid-type models. For each of these classes, some phenomena on various time and length scales are presented and the connections between micro-scale and macro-scale models are explained. We discuss Schrodinger-Poisson systems for the simulation of quantum waveguides and illustrate the importance of using open boundary conditions. We present Wigner-based semiconductor models and sketch their mathematical analysis. Can entanglement be extracted from many body systems?

Some thermodynamical properties of solids, such as heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility, have recently been shown to be linked to the amount of entanglement in a solid. Until now, however, it was not clear whether this entanglement can be used as a resource in quantum information theory. Here we show that this entanglement is physical, demonstrating the principles of its extraction from a typical spin chain by scattering two particles off the system. Moreover, we show how to simulate this process using present-day optical lattice technology. © 2007 World Scientific Publishing Company.
