Trapping Amorphous Intermediates of Carbonates – A Combined Total Scattering and NMR Study
2018
Crystallization via metastable phases plays an important role in chemical manufacturing, biomineralization, and protein crystallization, but the kinetic pathways leading from metastable phases to the stable crystalline modifications are not well understood. In particular, the fast crystallization of amorphous intermediates makes a detailed characterization challenging. To circumvent this problem, we devised a system that allows trapping and stabilizing the amorphous intermediates of representative carbonates (calcium, strontium, barium, manganese, and cadmium). The long-term stabilization of these transient species enabled a detailed investigation of their composition, structure, and morpho…
Structure and dynamics of amphiphilic Janus spheres and spherocylinders under shear.
2019
We study the structure formation and flow properties of colloidal dispersions comprised of Janus spheres, Janus spherocylinders, and their mixtures, using hybrid molecular dynamics simulations that take into account hydrodynamic interactions. We systematically vary the Janus balance and the shape anisotropy of the particles, and explore a range of colloid volume fractions in the liquid regime of the phase diagram. At rest, Janus spheres with small hydrophobic patches form spherical micelles for all investigated colloid concentrations. In contrast, Janus spheres with an entirely hydrophobic hemisphere aggregate to larger worm-like micelles and network-like structures. Janus spherocylinders e…

Self-assembled aggregates of amphiphilic perylene diimide-based semiconductor molecules: effect of morphology on conductivity.
2011
Abstract Two amphiphilic perylenetetracarboxylic diimide derivatives modified with different side chains at imide nitrogen, N- n -hexyl-N′-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,7-di(4′-t-butyl)phenoxy-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide ( PDI 1 ) and N,N′-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,7-di(4′-t-butyl)phenoxy-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide ( PDI 2 ), were fabricated into organic nanostructures via solution-phase self-assembly. Their self-assembling properties in methanol and n -hexane have been comparatively studied by electronic absorption, fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The morphologies and structures of the self-assemblies were examined by scanning electronic micr…
Triggering the generation of an iron(IV)-oxo compound and its reactivity toward sulfides by RuII photocatalysis
2014
The preparation of [FeIV(O)(MePy2tacn)]2+ (2, MePy2tacn = N-methyl-N,N-bis(2-picolyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) by reaction of [FeII(MePy2tacn)(solvent)]2+ (1) and PhIO in CH3CN and its full characterization are described. This compound can also be prepared photochemically from its iron(II) precursor by irradiation at 447 nm in the presence of catalytic amounts of [Ru II(bpy)3]2+ as photosensitizer and a sacrificial electron acceptor (Na2S2O8). Remarkably, the rate of the reaction of the photochemically prepared compound 2 toward sulfides increases 150-fold under irradiation, and 2 is partially regenerated after the sulfide has been consumed; hence, the process can be repeated several times.…
Selective Derivatization of Resorcarenes. 3. C2-Symmetrical and Transcavity Bridged Bis-Benzoxazines Derived from C2v-Symmetrical Tetratosylates
1998
The regioselective condensation of resorcarene tetratosylates 3/4 with formaldehyde and various primary amines readily gives bis-benzoxazines 5/6 in 65−86% yield. The chiral, C2-symmetrical structure of these compounds has been proved by NMR-spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Bis-benzoxazines 5f and 5i assume in the crystalline state a boat conformation in which the two resorcinol rings bearing the oxazine fragments are nearly parallel. The tosylated resorcinol units are horizontally arranged in a propeller-like fashion, and two intramolecular hydrogen bonds are formed between the phenolic hydroxy groups and the oxygens of the neighboring sulfonyl fragments. Molecular mechanics…
A set-up for simultaneous measurement of second harmonic generation and streaming potential and some test applications.
2018
We present a measurement cell that allows simultaneous measurement of second harmonic generation (SHG) and streaming potential (SP) at mineral-water interfaces with flat specimen that are suitable for non-linear optical (NLO) studies. The set-up directly yields SHG data for the interface of interest and can also be used to obtain information concerning the influence of flow on NLO signals from that interface. The streaming potential is at present measured against a reference substrate (PTFE). The properties of this inert reference can be independently determined for the same conditions. With the new cell, for the first time the SHG signal and the SP for flat surfaces have been simultaneousl…
Bottom-Up, On-Surface-Synthesized Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons for Ultra-High-Power Micro-Supercapacitors
2020
Bottom-up-synthesized graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with excellent electronic properties are promising materials for energy storage systems. Herein, we report bottom-up-synthesized GNR films employed as electrode materials for micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). The micro-device delivers an excellent volumetric capacitance and an ultra-high power density. The electrochemical performance of MSCs could be correlated with the charge carrier mobility within the differently employed GNRs, as determined by pump–probe terahertz spectroscopy studies.
Superconductivity in Nb21S8, a Phase with Metal Cluster Chains
1998
Phase pure samples of Nb21S8 are obtained by chemical transport and molten flux reactions in sealed niobium containers at 850−950 °C. In the temperature range from 5 to 290 K the electrical conductivity is found to be moderate metallic with a specific resistivity of 3.90 mΩ cm at 273 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements give weak, almost temperature independent paramagnetism above ∼40 K. These metallic properties are compared with the structure of Nb21S8, which contains linear single and double chains of fused body centered niobium cubes, separated by S and additional Nb atoms. Both physical measurements consistently show a transition into the superconducting state below 4.1(5) and 3.7(2…
Ripening-dominated crystallization in polydisperse hard-sphere-like colloids
2009
We report on the crystal growth scenario in gravity-matched, polydisperse hard-sphere-like colloids at increasing particle concentration. In the fluid-crystal coexistence region, the crystal size as a function of time shows two separate regimes corresponding to crystal growth and crystal ripening. At higher supersaturation the crystal size grows according to the same power law through the whole experimental window of a few days: crystal growth and ripening merge together. We show that our observations cannot be explained by considering the slowing down of single-particle dynamics due to increasing volume fraction. We suggest that size fractionation occurring at the crystal-fluid interface i…
