High-Performance Electron-Transporting Polymers Derived from a Heteroaryl Bis(trifluoroborate)
2011
In this communication, we report that dipotassium aryl bis(trifluoroborate)s make stable and easy-to-purify yet reactive monomers under Suzuki polycondensation reactions. A bis(trifluoroborate) of 2-alkylbenzotriazole was prepared successfully and copolymerized with dibromobenzothiadiazole in the presence of a Pd catalyst and LiOH, yielding high molecular weight conjugated polymers. This polymer (P1) composed of all electron-accepting units shows excellent electron-transport properties (μ(e) = 0.02 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)), which proves the value of the aryl bis(trifluoroborate) monomers and suggests that many other types of semiconducting polymers that could not be accessed previously can be syn…
Adsorption of water vapor by poly(styrenesulfonic acid), sodium salt: isothermal and isobaric adsorption equilibria
2004
Abstract Air conditioning and dehumidifying systems based on sorption on solids are of great interest, especially in humid climates, because they allow reduction of thermal loads and use of chlorofluorocarbons. Previous studies have shown that hydrophilic polymers such as sulfonic polymers can have very high performance in water adsorption from air. The aim of this study was to characterize the water vapor adsorption properties of fully sulfonated and monosulfonated poly(styrenesulfonic acid), sodium salt, and to elucidate the mechanism of adsorption on these materials. Adsorption isotherms have been determined by TGA between 298 and 317 K for pressures ranging from 0.1 to 45 hPa. They have…
Novel patternable and conducting metal-polymer nanocomposites: a step towards advanced mutlifunctional materials
2013
In this work, we present a novel patternable conducting nanocomposite containing gold nanoparticles. Here, the in-situ polymerization of 3T is carried out using HAuCl 4 as oxidizing agent inside PMMA as host matrix. During the bake step, the gold salt is also reduced from Au(III) to Au(0) generating Au nanoparticles in the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) system. We found that this novel multifunctional resist shows electrical conductivity and plasmonic properties as well as potential patterning capability provided by the host matrix. The resulting nanocomposite has been investigated by TEM and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Electrical characterization was also conducted for different concentra…
Pseudo-solid echoes of proton and deuteron NMR in polyethvlene melts
1981
The solid echo technique is applied to determining residual dipolar and quadrupolar couplings in molten polyethylene (PE) and deuterated PE, respectively. The residual coupling defined by the square root of the second moment is about 1% of the corresponding quantity in the solid. It increases with molecular weight, and decreases with rising temperature. A theoretical treatment of time dependent residual couplings yields a decay time that is found experimentally to be about 0.1 ms in molten PE, and independent of molecular weight and temperature within our limits of accuracy. The residual coupling is discussed in relation with chain entanglement in PE. Measurements of the spin-lattice and sp…
Effective pair potential between charged nanoparticles at high volume fractions
2017
Simulations of charged colloidal dispersions are technically challenging. One possible workaround consists in reducing the system to the colloids only, whose interactions are described through an effective pair potential, wf. Still, the determination of wf is difficult mainly because it depends on the colloidal density, ϕ. Here we propose to calculate wf from simulations of a pair of colloids placed in a cubic box with periodic boundary conditions. The variation in ϕ is mimicked by an appropriate change in the concentration of counterions neutralized by an homogeneous background charge. The method is tested at the level of the primitive model. A good description of the structure of the coll…
Cyclodextrin/surfactant inclusion complexes: An integrated view of their thermodynamic and structural properties
2021
Cyclodextrins (CDs) play an important role in self-assembly systems of amphiphiles. The structure of CDs provides distinguished physicochemical properties, including the ability to form host-guest complexes. The complexation affects the properties of guest molecules and can produce supramolecular aggregates with desirable characteristics for fundamental and practical applications. Surfactants are particularly attractive host molecules due to their wide variety, availability, responsiveness to different stimuli, and high relevance in different fields, e.g. medical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries. The tendency of organization in higher-order supramolecular aggregates arises the…

Reduction of the aluminum iodide AlI2AriPr8 (1; AriPr8 = C6H-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Pri3)2-3,5-Pri2) with 5% w/w Na/NaCl in hexanes gave a dark red solution from which the monomeric alanediyl :AlAriPr8 (2) was isolated in ca. 28% yield as yellow-orange crystals. Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography, electronic and NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The Al atom in 2 is one-coordinate, and the compound displays two absorptions in its electronic spectrum at 354 and 455 nm. It reacts with H2 under ambient conditions to give the aluminum hydride {AlH(μ-H)AriPr8}2, probably via a weakly bound dimer of 2 as an intermediate.
Salt concentration and particle density dependence of electrophoretic mobilities of spherical colloids in aqueous suspension.
2007
Using laser Doppler velocimetry in the superheterodyne mode, we conducted a systematic study of the electrophoretic mobility of dispersions of small silica spheres (a=18 nm) suspended in water at different salinities and particle concentrations. The concentration of NaCl was varied from 40 microM up to 16 mM, while the particle concentrations were varied between 4.2x10(18) and 2.1x10(20) m-3. We find a decrease of mobility with increasing salt concentrations and an increase with increased particle number densities. The latter observation is not backed by the standard cell model of electrophoresis with Shilov-Zharkikh boundary conditions. Rather, if the experimental data are interpreted with…

The organic electrochemical transistor (OECT), capable of transducing small ionic fluxes into electronic signals in an aqueous environment, is an ideal device to utilize in bioelectronic applications. Currently, most OECTs are fabricated with commercially available conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based suspensions and are therefore operated in depletion mode. Here, we present a series of semiconducting polymers designed to elucidate important structure–property guidelines required for accumulation mode OECT operation. We discuss key aspects relating to OECT performance such as ion and hole transport, electrochromic properties, operational voltage, and stability. The demo…
