Electronic and vibrational signatures of the Au102p-MBA44 cluster

2011

Optical absorption of a gold nanocluster of 102 Au atoms protected by 44 para-mercaptobenzoic acid (p-MBA) ligands is measured in the range of 0.05-6.2 eV (mid-IR to UV) by a combination of several techniques for purified samples in solid and solution phases. The results are compared to calculations for a model cluster Au(102)(SMe)(44) based on the time-dependent density functional theory in the linear-response regime and using the known structure of Au(102)(p-MBA)(44). The measured and calculated molar absorption coefficients in the NIR-vis region are comparable, within a factor of 2, in the absolute scale. Several characteristic features are observed in the absorption in the range of 1.5-…

Spin Density Maps in the Triplet Ground State of [Cu2(t-Bupy)4(N3)2](ClO4)2 (t-Bupy = p-tert-butylpyridine):  A Polarized Neutron Diffraction Study

1998

This paper is devoted to the determination of the spin distribution in the spin triplet ground state of [Cu-2(t-Bupy)(4)(N-3)(2)](ClO4)(2), With t-Bupy = p-tert-butylpyridine. The crystal structure, previously solved at room temperature from X-ray diffraction, has been redetermined at 18 K from unpolarized neutron diffraction. The structure consists of binuclear cations in which Cu2+ ions are doubly bridged by azido groups in the 1,1-fashion, and noncoordinated perchlorate anions. The experimental spin distribution has been determined from polarized neutron diffraction (PND) at 1.6 K under 50 kOe. The spin populations have been found to be strongly positive on the Cu2+ ions, weakly positive…

Very Long-Lived Photogenerated High-Spin Phase of a Multistable Spin-Crossover Molecular Material

2018

The spin-crossover compound [Fe(n-Bu-im)3(tren)](PF6)2 shows an unusual long relaxation time of 20 h after light-induced excited spin state trapping when irradiating at 80 K. This is more than 40 times longer than when irradiating at 10 K. Optical absorption spectroscopy, magnetometry, and X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation were used to characterize and explain the different relaxation behaviors of this compound after irradiation below and above 70 K. Rearrangement of the butyl chains of the ligands occurring during the relaxation after irradiation above 70 K is thought to be responsible for the unusually long relaxation time at this temperature.

Does the solid-liquid crystal phase transition provoke the spin-state change in spin-crossover metallomesogens?

2008

Three types of interplay/synergy between spin-crossover (SCO) and liquid crystalline (LC) phase transitions can be predicted: (i) systems with coupled phase transitions, where the structural changes associated to the Cr LC phase transition drives the spin-state transition, (ii) systems where both transitions coexist in the same temperature region but are not coupled, and (iii) systems with uncoupled phase transitions. Here we present a new family of Fe(II) metallomesogens based on the ligand tris[3-aza-4-((5-C(n))(6-R)(2-pyridyl))but-3-enyl]amine, with C(n) = hexyloxy, dodecyloxy, hexadecyloxy, octadecyloxy, eicosyloxy, R = hydrogen or methyl (C(n)-trenH or C(n)-trenMe), which affords examp…

A Switchable Molecular Rotator: Neutron Spectroscopy Study on a Polymeric Spin-Crossover Compound

2012

A quasielastic neutron scattering and solid-state 2H NMR spectroscopy study of the polymeric spin-crossover compound {Fe(pyrazine)[Pt(CN) 4]} shows that the switching of the rotation of a molecular fragment-the pyrazine ligand-occurs in association with the change of spin state. The rotation switching was examined on a wide time scale (10 -13-10 -3 s) by both techniques, which clearly demonstrated the combination between molecular rotation and spin-crossover transition under external stimuli (temperature and chemical). The pyrazine rings are seen to perform a 4-fold jump motion about the coordinating nitrogen axis in the high-spin state. In the low-spin state, however, the motion is suppres…

Albumin-driven disassembly of lipidic nanoparticles: the specific case of the squalene-adenosine nanodrug

2020

International audience; In the field of nanomedicine, nanostructured nanoparticles (NPs) made of self-assembling prodrugs emerged in the recent years with promising properties. In particular, squalene-based drug nanoparticles have already shown their efficiency through in vivo experiments. However, a complete pattern of their stability and interactions in the blood stream is still lacking. In this work we assess the behavior of squalene-adenosine (SQAd) nanoparticles-whose neuroprotective effect has already been demonstrated in murine models-in the presence of fetal bovine serum (FBS) and of bovine serum albumin (BSA), the main protein of blood plasma. Extensive physicochemical characteriza…

GFP immunogold staining, from light to electron microscopy, in mammalian cells.

2012

GFP has emerged as an important reporter for monitoring gene expression, protein localization, cell transformation and cell lineage. The development of GFP as a marker in many different biological systems has emphasized the need to image GFP at high resolution. GFP immunogold labeling with colloidal gold particles becomes essential for electron microscopy (EM) ultrastructural detection. Because of the small size, colloidal gold particles require silver enhancement, a procedure to increase the size of the particle as well as gold toning to stabilize the silver layer. GFP preembedding immunogold staining enables high quality cellular-ultrastructural EM analysis mainly for two reasons, on one …

Visualization of RNA-Quadruplexes in Live Cells

2015

Visualization of DNA and RNA quadruplex formation in human cells was demonstrated recently with different quadruplex-specific antibodies. Despite the significant interest in these immunodetection approaches, dynamic detection of quadruplex in live cells remains elusive. Here, we report on NaphthoTASQ (N-TASQ), a next-generation quadruplex ligand that acts as a multiphoton turn-on fluorescent probe. Single-step incubation of human and mouse cells with N-TASQ enables the direct detection of RNA-quadruplexes in untreated cells (no fixation, permeabilization or mounting steps), thus offering a unique, unbiased visualization of quadruplexes in live cells.

To make a glass—avoid the crystal

2016

Colloidal model systems allow for a flexible tuning of particle sizes, particle spacings and mutual interactions at constant temperature. Colloidal suspensions typically crystallize as soon as the interactions get sufficiently strong and long-ranged. Several strategies have been successfully applied to avoid crystallization and instead produce colloidal glasses. Most of these amorphous solids are formed at high particle concentrations. This paper shortly reviews experimental attempts to produce amorphous colloidal solids using strategies based on topological, thermodynamic and kinetic considerations. We complement this overview by introducing a (transient) amorphous solid forming in a thoro…

Phenomenology of colloidal crystal electrophoresis

2003

We studied the motion of polycrystalline solids comprising of charged sub-micron latex spheres suspended in deionized water. These were subjected to a low frequency alternating square wave electric field in an optical cell of rectangular cross section. Velocity profiles in X and Y direction were determined by Laser Doppler Velocimetry. The observed complex flow profiles are time dependent due to the combined effects of electro-osmosis, electrophoresis, crystal elasticity, and friction of the crystals at the cell wall. On small time scales elastic deformation occurs. On long time scales channel formation is observed. At intermediate times steady state profiles are dominated by a solid plug o…
