Recently it has been shown that IFN-alpha inhibits expression of GM-CSF in adherent cells of human long-term bone marrow cultures (LTBMC) stimulated with interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) or endotoxin. The murine bone marrow stromal cell line +/+(-1).LDA11 was used to further define regulatory mechanisms of IFN-alpha inhibition on GM-CSF expression. This cell line originated from a murine Dexter type culture and exhibits a preadipocytic phenotype. Jocano was part of a group of Philippine social scientists who earned their post-graduate degrees at the University of Chicago after the Philippines became independent from the US. One of the pre-eminent scholars in the Philippines, Jocano’s professional and intellectual journey unfolded against the backdrop of the Cold War and decolonization. Hydrogels for potential colon drug release by thiol-ene conjugate addition of a new inulin derivative.

Inulin was chosen as a starting polymer for biocompatible, pH-sensitive and biodegradable hydrogels. Three INUDVSA-TT hydrogels were obtained by crosslinking inulin derivatives with trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) under varying conditions. The resulting hydrogels were cell compatible, as demonstrated by MTS and trypan blue exclusion assays acting on Caco-2 cells, and were biodegraded by inulinase and esterase, thus suggesting their use as colonic drug delivery systems. 2-Methoxyestradiol, an anti-cancer drug, was soaked in INUDVSA-TT hydrogels and its in vitro release and apoptotic effect on Caco-2 cells were evaluated.

This paper presents an original approach for improving performances of the supervised classifiers in remote sensing imagery by proposing a technique to refine a given training set using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). The new method called ACO-Training Label Cleaning (ACO-TLC) applies ACO model for selection of the significant training samples from a given set of labeled vectors in order to optimize the quality of a supervised classifier. This means to retain the most informative samples and to remove the uncertain or misclassified training samples, which lead to classification errors. Characterisation and detection of spoilage mould responsible for black spot in dry-cured fermented sausages.

Moulds responsible for black spot spoilage of dry-cured fermented sausages were characterised. For this purpose, samples were taken from those dry-cured fermented sausages which showed black spot alteration. Most of the mould strains were first tentatively identified as Penicillium spp. due to their morphological characteristics in different culture conditions, with one strain as Cladosporium sp. The Cladosporium strain was the only one which provoked blackening in culture media. This strain was further characterised by sequencing of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rRNA and β-tubulin genes.
