Higher Education and Global Social Injustice
2020
This dissertation, composed of three unique scholarly articles, explores some of the ways in which institutions of higher education facilitate and mitigate social injustice on a global scale. Specifically analyzing the behavior of administrative actors—defined as those that serve in a leadership role outside of the classroom—the purpose of the research was twofold. Firstly, I aimed to identify the mechanisms by which administrative actors at U.S. and Finnish institutions of higher education legitimized and rationalized their involvement in globally unjust educational practices. Secondly, I sought to identify the ways in which administrative actors in these economically privileged countries …

For a History of Anthropology in the Plural
2023
What are the reasons behind the “scientific” positioning that anthropology had adopted since its origins up to a few decades ago? They were certainly cognitive reasons, but they were intertwined with political concerns, ideological frameworks and cultural references. The urge to gain academic legitimacy, reliance on “Western-centric” perspectives and the aspiration to build broad, universal knowledge all played a role. Another significant role was played by its involvement in the project and the projection of colonial supremacy. These are all implicit factors that started to take on an increasingly deliberate problematic form, and finally culminated in the “crisis of representation”, fallin…

ROLE OF RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN SYSTEM IN COLONIC DYSMOTILITY ASSOCIATED WITH BOWEL INFLAMMATION IN RATS
2015
Dysregulation of different mediator systems could contribute to the gut dismotility in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), chronic disorders characterized by an exasperated immune response disturbing gut functions. Among these, Angiotensin II (Ang II), the main peptide of renin-angiotensin system (RAS), can participate in inflammatory responses and RAS components are increased in IBD patients. Since RAS has emerged as gut motility regulator, our objectives was to investigate, in an IBD rat model, the RAS functionality and its eventual contribution to colonic dismotility. Experimental colitis was induced in rats by intracolonic administration of 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (DNBS). Drug e…
Associations among immigrants at the crossroads.Transnational action and co-option risks
2016
History Matters: Colonial‑Based Connectivity and Foreign Headquarter Location Choice
2022
AbstractIn this study, we argue that European countries’ extensive relationships with former colonies represent a location factor that attracts foreign headquarter investments. The strategic role of foreign headquarters as coordinators, opportunity detectors, and global bridgeheads makes the location choice of headquarter activities sensitive to historical-based institutional connections. Drawing on a sample of 2230 foreign headquarter investments in Europe, we find that the stronger the combined effect of historical connections and current economic relationships with former colonies, the higher the probability of attracting headquarter investment projects. We refer to this combined charact…
Variability of the human gut microbiota in space, time, and associated with the irritable bowel syndrome
2013
2017
This doctoral dissertation investigates the imagery of Sáminess in contemporary Sámi poetry. The research material of the study consists of poetry collections published in North Sámi and Norwegian by eight Sámi authors: Inger-Mari Aikio (previously Aikio-Arianaick), Inga Ravna Eira, Rawdna Carita Eira, Irene Larsen, Rauni Magga Lukkari, Hege Siri, Nils- Aslak Valkeapää, and Ellen Marie Vars. The emphasis is on poetry published at the turn of the 2010s. The study examines how Sáminess has been depicted and constructed in poetry from the 1980s onwards. The four original research articles ask how images traditionally connected to Sáminess and indigenousness are used in contemporary poems and h…
