Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor-cultured bone marrow-derived macrophages reveal accessory cell function and synthesis of MHC class I…

1988

The antigen-mediated activation of a number of T cell clones by bone marrow (BM) cells cultivated in the presence of various colony-stimulating factor (CSF) preparations was investigated. BM macrophages (BMM phi) grown in L929 cell supernatant as a crude source of macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) as well as BM cells propagated in the presence of recombinant M-CSF exhibited transient antigen presentation potential to some T cell clones, being maximal on day 7 and having declined to a low level by day 19 of in vitro culture. Treatment of these long-term-cultivated BMM phi populations with recombinant interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) resulted in predominant antigen presentation capacit…

Screening of colorectal cancer: present and future

2017

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in males and second in females, and the fourth most common cause of cancer death worldwide. Currently, about 60-70% of diagnosed cases in symptomatic patients are detected at an advanced stage of disease. Earlier stage detection through the use of screening strategies would allow for better outcomes in terms of reducing the disease burden. Areas covered: The aim of this paper is to review the current published evidence from literature which assesses the performance and effectiveness of different screening tests for the early detection of CRC. Expert commentary: Adequate screening strategies can reduce CRC incidence and mortality. In th…

Bacterial inactivation/sterilization by argon plasma treatment on contaminated titanium implant surfaces: in vitro study

2015

Background: Surface treatment by argon plasma is widely used as the last step of the manufacturing process of ti- tanium implant fixtures before their sterilization by gamma rays. The possibility of using such a technology in the daily clinical practice is particularly fascinating. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of the argon plasma treatment on different titanium implant surfaces previously exposed in vitro to bacterial contamination. Material and Methods: Sterile c.p. titanium implant discs with turned (T, Sa: 0.8μm), sandblasted/acid-etched (SAE, Sa: 1.3μm) and titanium plasma sprayed (TPS, Sa: 3.0μm) surface were used in this study. A strain of Ag- gregatibacter a…

Vacuum inversion and securing of distal colonic pseudodiverticula with novel spiked O-rings

2015

Background Diverticular disease is increasingly prevalent in Western societies and is associated with significant morbidity. Objective Two-stage endoscopic device development for inversion and secured ligation of colonic diverticula; first, human cadaver studies were performed to measure forces required for diverticular inversion; second, a novel set of devices (elastic spiked O-ring with delivery system) was tested in animals. Design Prospective, observational study of human cadavers and prospective, interventional study of a porcine model. Setting University hospital pathology laboratory and animal facility. Intervention Full-thickness inversion of the colonic wall with a pipelike deliver…

Definition of the Rectum An International, Expert-based Delphi Consensus

2019

Mini: A radiological, anatomic distinction between the rectum and sigmoid colon was agreed by consensus of international experts in rectal cancer using the Delphi Technique. Use of this landmark, “the sigmoid take-off,” may harmonize efforts in research and clinical practice to improve patient outcomes. Background: The wide global variation in the definition of the rectum has led to significant inconsistencies in trial recruitment, clinical management, and outcomes. Surgical technique and use of preoperative treatment for a cancer of the rectum and sigmoid colon are radically different and dependent on the local definitions employed by the clinical team. A consensus definition of the rectum…

Can we set quality standards for the centers : minimally invasive surgery vs. open surgery in colorectal cancer resection

2020

Esta comunicación se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://www.fortunejournals.com/articles/can-we-set-quality-standards-for-the-centers-minimally-invasive-surgery-vs-open-surgery-in-colorectal-cancer-resection.pdf Background: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is the standard method for resection of colorectal cancer, but its indications have limitations that are constantly debated. In our study, the center had to meet the following four factors: surgeons should have considerable experience, there should be a high percentage of MIS, a low conversion rate, and good results in the intervention. Methods: Retrospective observational study of a cohort of 948 patients with colorectal c…

Inferior mesenteric vein as initial landmark for laparoscopic medial to lateral dissection of descending colon - a video vignette

2017

The root of the inferior mesenteric artery is an important area where autonomic nerves are close by, the dissection can be hard and laborious in order to avoid nerve damage; and the separation of mesocolon and retroperitoneum in this area can sometimes be difficult. The inferior mesenteric vein dissection is an alternative option as the first step during medial to lateral approach of laparoscopic left mesocolon mobilisation, as we have shown in this video based on two real cases and two anatomical cadaveric dissection. Analysis of Candida auris candidemia cases in an Intensive Care Unit of a tertiary hospital

2021

Abstract Candida auris is a multi-resistant emerging fungus. Objectives To analyze the relationship between colonization by C. auris and the appearance of invasive candidiasis. Description of the sample of colonized patients, risk factors for colonization and/or infection, and calculation of mortality rates. Methodology Longitudinal observational study in an anesthesia intensive care unit in 2018. Results 2130 patients were admitted. Surveillance studies were positive in 124 patients; 118 cases involved skin colonization and 52 were pharyngeal. Patients with a positive blood culture were identified. A statistically significant association was found between pharyngeal colonization and the ap…

An atypical clinical presentation of acute appendicitis in a young man with midgut malrotation

2007

Abstract Midgut malrotation occurs as a result of failure in normal intestinal rotation and fixation during early pregnancy. Pathological conditions reported in the literature involving midgut malrotation predominantly relate to infants and children. In adults malrotation is often revealed as an incidental finding on computed tomography (CT), or the associated altered anatomy can be the cause of atypical clinical symptoms of relatively common intestinal disorders. An unusual presentation of acute appendicitis, with fever and recurrent pain in left iliac fossa is reported. Underlying intestinal malrotation delayed the correct clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis. It was not until a CT sc…
