"Rappresentazioni del corpo del colonizzato, riletture postcoloniali a confronto", Barbara Creed and Jeanette Hoorn (eds.), Body Trade, New York, Rou…

2003

Transverstites re-existences: A counterhistory from the visual difference in Peru

2018

"This is Ghanaian territory!": Land conflicts on a West African border

2003

Most African borders have remained permeable, not least because the colonial and postcolonial states have lacked the necessary resources to enforce them more rigidly, "top-down." In this article, I analyze the ways in which an African border has been dealt with "from below," partly ignored or subverted and partly appropriated. The border between Ghana and Burkina Faso, drawn up in 1898, was soon adopted by the borderlanders as a political resource, capable of shielding them from colonial tax and forced-labor requirements. Local networks of kinship and strategies of land use, on the other hand, usually ignored the border. Although the border cut through many earth-shrine areas, the indigenou…

Richard Francis Burton. Victorian Explorer and Translator

2012

This volume offers a critical insight into the life and work of the controversial Victorian explorer and translator Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). Analysis focuses on his travel accounts and erotic translations, which both re-elaborated and challenged dominant Victorian discourses on race, gender and sexuality, generating controversies in the fields of anthropology, sexology and medicine. The premise of the study is that Burton entertained an ambiguous relationship with the colonial institutions: on the one hand, he pursued the colonial project, while on the other, he was an irreverent outsider who clashed with the imperial authorities. As this investigation reveals, he defied British …

The Foreign Female Body as a Symbolic Resource in Marina Warner's "Queen of Sheba"

2008

Marina Warner contaminates different versions of the Queen of Sheba “story” in which the Queen is specifically “a queen of the South” and in which her otherness is impressed on her dark/black body. Warner juxtaposes various narratives with different orders of corporeal readings that can be visibly condensed in the image of the queen as she crosses a (Mediterranean) border/watercourse raising her dress and showing her legs. This image dominates the exotic versions that have been reworked by Warner even within colonial models. Warner shows how the queen’s body becomes a symbolic resource for an ideological conflict that changes perspectives according to the context but that is always fought o…

Les topologies imaginaires de Lauren Beukes dans Moxyland (2008) et The Shining Girls (2013)

2019

International audience; This article examines two novels published by South African writer Lauren Beukes. More specifically, it explores the way in which the two cities in which the novels are set blur a number of boundaries, thus creating paradoxical, and intermedial, topologies.
