A numerical model for pre-monitoring design of historical colonnade courtyards: The case study of chiaramonte palace in palermo

2016

This paper proposes a numerical model that can be used for theoretical and experimental dynamic characterization of historical colonnade courtyards. Such an architectural element appears often in buildings of historical heritage and, especially under seismic excitation, it represents the most vulnerable structural part. Therefore, it is very important to have reliable as well as simple models available for vulnerability analysis, to evaluate different reinforcing systems if needed, or to plan dynamic characterization tests or monitoring campaigns, as in the present case. Chiaramonte Palace, a wonderful example of the historical heritage of Palermo, is investigated as case study. Firstly, a …

Chiese colonnari e tiranti metallici (Palermo XVI-XVII secolo)

2014

The churches with aisles of arches and columns are an archetype of Sicilian architecture. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the preference for this plan resulted in experiments, evolutions and tests concerned with the science of building in a land exposed to the danger of earthquakes. Contrary to the recommendations dispensed and disseminated by the most authoritative treatises, the cases presented illustrate how metal tie-rods were used at construction sites in Palermo during the Modern Age when building these constructions. These elements were able to counter the thrust generated by the arches and vaults or caused by earthquakes on slender and isolated vertical structures like col…

Tipologia, materiali e costruzione: i prospetti colonnati pubblici in Sicilia dall’età post-unitaria al ventennio fascista, tra reminiscenze archeolo…

2020

The paper analyses the debate in Sicily on the construction of the monumental colonnaded porticoes that characterise the facades of public edifices built on the island from the post- Unification period to the Fascist regime. The pronao of the Massimo Theatre in Palermo (from 1875) marks the climax of a cultural movement, which, for almost a century, was to associate the neo-Greek style with public buildings and the material of choice of Sicily’s church building tradition in a deterministic manner. Calcarenite was used to build the peristyles of the temples of the archaic and classical age, with imposing, tapered and grooved columns consisting of overlapping sections. In the Fascist period, …

GEOMATIC TECHNIQUES FOR THE COLONNADE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORICAL “CHIARAMONTE STERI” BUILDING

2019

Abstract. The monitoring of building structures has an increasingly important role in the engineering field, above all because they are concerned with the impact that such structures have in the area where they were built. Often, when walking through the old town centres, we realize just how obsolete and dangerous some buildings (even historic-cultural ones) are. The interest of some local governments in this problem has led, in the last few years, to the study and the trying out of measuring and monitoring methods which, quickly and at low cost, allow to define the extent of the deformation and the degrade in an accurate and reliable way.The Courtyard of “Palazzo Steri - Chiaramonte” is co…

Surveying, Analysis and 3D Modeling in Archaeological Virtual Reconstruction. The inner colonnade of the naos of Temple G of Selinunte.

2012

This paper is focused on the virtual reconstruction of a portion of the naos of Temple G of Selinunte, as a case study for the definition of a method of virtual anastylosis and reconstruction of collapsed colonnades in archaeological contexts. Reconstruction is based on the combination of historical research, archaeological analysis, digital surveying, image-based modeling and laser scanning methods. The complexity of the ruins of the temple suggested a thorough archaeological analysis of the fragments of the inner colonnade of the naos. This analysis made it possible to identify reference surfaces and protective or sacrificial surfaces. The study of these surfaces, together with the dimens…
