Comprehensive laparoscopic approach to pediatric varicocele based on preoperative color Doppler ultrasound assessment
2008
Abstract: Background This study aimed to assess whether laparoscopic treatment for any kind of varicocele is possible after preoperative identification of refluxing veins by color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS). Methods At the authors'' institution, 98 patients with a median age of 11.3 years (range, 7.1-16 years) were evaluated for a left varicocele. Preoperatively, all the patients underwent ultrasound scan assessment of testicular volume and CDUS to rule out reflux into the internal spermatic vein (ISV), deferential vein, or cremasteric vein. In all the patients, laparoscopic division of the spermatic artery and veins was performed as close as possible to the internal inguinal ring. The other…
The hemodynamic approach to evaluating adolescent varicocele
2012
During adolescence, the risk of developing a varicocele increases. Prevalence is less than 1% in boys aged younger than 10 years, but approaches that of the general adult population (about 15%) during puberty. For adolescent males with varicoceles, surgical risk factors have not yet been clearly delineated and clinical severity correlates poorly with prognosis. Fortunately, the widespread use of Doppler ultrasonography is transforming the diagnostic work-up for this demographic. A continuous reflux detected by color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS) is thought to have a negative prognostic value and evidence suggests that a peak retrograde flow above 38 cm per second is a powerful predictor of lack…
Color Doppler ultrasonography in pediatric intussusception.
1994
CDU was used in 11 children with intussusception. Demonstration of vascular images within the "pseudokidney" mass was possible in none of 11 cases. Of them, eight could be treated by hydrostatic reduction. In the remaining case, marked edema of the bowel wall did not allow reduction, and surgery had to be performed: no necrosis was observed in the surgical specimen. Both patients in whom CDU failed to demonstrate vascular signals had necrosis at surgery, and bowel resection was performed. Because of the limited number of patients examined at this time, no firm conclusions can be drawn from our experience. However, CDU seems a promising technique in detecting vascular changes occurring in in…

MONITORAGGIO ECO-COLORDOPPLER DEL RENE TRAPIANTATO.NOSTRA ESPERIENZA
2005

US-Elastography for Breast Lesion Characterization: Prospective Comparison of US BIRADS, Strain Elastography and Shear wave Elastography
2020
To evaluate the diagnostic performance of strain elastography (SE) and 2 D shear wave elastography (SWE) and SE/SWE combination in comparison with conventional multiparametric ultrasound (US) with respect to improving BI-RADS classification results and differentiating benign and malignant breast lesions using a qualitative and quantitative assessment. In this prospective study, 130 histologically proven breast masses were evaluated with baseline US, color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS), SE and SWE (Toshiba Aplio 500 with a 7-15 MHz wide-band linear transducer). Each lesion was classified according to the BIRADS lexicon by evaluating the size, the B-mode and color Doppler features, the SE qualit…
Sonographic examination of epiaortic vessels in patients with peripheral vertigo
2010
To evaluate the utility of echo-color-Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) of extracranial brain-supplying vessels in patients with peripheral vertigo of unknown origin.One-hundred-fifty-six patients (study group; 42 male and 114 female; mean age 61.86 ± 14.14) and 161 patients (control group; 80 male and 81 female; mean age 62.31 ± 13.69) were prospectively evaluated with CDU of extracranial brain-supplying vessels. Plaques in common and/or internal carotid artery (CA), arterial wall intima-media thickness (IMT) of common CA and peak systolic velocity (PSV) and resistive index (RI) of vertebral arteries (VA) were evaluated. Parametric (t-test) and non-parametric (Mann-Whitney U-test and Kolmogoro…
Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx®) transarterial embolization for post-traumatic high-flow priapism
2016
International audience; We report a case of high-flow priapism treated successfully with superselective embolization of the cavernous artery. A 16-year-old male developed post-traumatic priapism subsequent to a fall causing blunt perineal trauma. He presented to our hospital four days after trauma. Immediately after the injury, he suffered painless sustained incomplete erection. High-flow priapism was diagnosed on the basis of color doppler ultrasonography findings. Computed tomography scan showed a high-flow arterio-venous fistula with feeders from branches of the right internal iliac artery. Selective arteriography of the right internal pudendal artery demonstrated an arterio-cavernous fi…
Transesophageal contrast echocardiography is not always the gold standard method in the identification of a patent foramen ovale: A clinical case
2015
In the embryo, Eustachian valve is a crescent-shaped membrane extending from the lower margin of the inferior vena cava and the ostium of the coronary sinus into the right atrium toward fossa ovalis and tricuspid valve. At birth, after the functional closure of the foramen ovale, the Eustachian valve loses its function, reducing to an embryo remnant. According to growing evidence, a persistent Eustachian valve is a frequent finding in patients with a patent foramen ovale (PFO). By directing the blood from the inferior cava to the interatrial septum, it may prevent the spontaneous closure of PFO after birth and indirectly predispose to paradoxical embolism. Transesophageal contrast enhanced …
