Colonoscopy for screening of colorectal cancer. What are the news? Review

2003

The goal of every routine endoscopy in the gut is the early diagnosis of malignant and premalignant changes of the mucosa. Chromo- and magnifying endoscopes are exciting new tools and offer detailed analysis of the colonic mucosal surface and pit pattern architecture. This review summarizes recent advances in endoscopic characterization of colorectal lesions using magnification endoscopy and chromoendoscopy. Surface analysis of the colon using chromoendoscopy allows a prediction between nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions with high specificity. The precise delineation of the borders and a more detailed macroscopic analysis of the lesions are further advantages. In particular, flat adenomas…

Intramedullary spinal cord tumor presenting as the initial manifestation of metastatic colon cancer: case report and review of the literature

2007

Study design: Case reports and review of the literature. Objective: Intramedullary spinal cord metastases (ISCMs) are rare type of central nervous system (CNS) involvement of systemic malignant tumors. Since the advent of new neuroradiological techniques, their detection have become increasingly diagnosed in recent years and, although somewhat controversial, surgical treatment has been considered a valid option. Setting: Neurosurgical Clinic, Department of Clinic Neuroscience, University of Palermo, Italy. Method: The authors describe the case of a 61-year-old woman who was admitted presenting withprogres sive tetraplegia. Investigations revealed an intramedullary spinal cord lesion at the …

Background Accurate evaluation of immunostained histological images is required for reproducible research in many different areas and forms the basis of many clinical decisions. The quality and efficiency of histopathological evaluation is limited by the information content of a histological image, which is primarily encoded as perceivable contrast differences between objects in the image. However, the colors of chromogen and counterstain used for histological samples are not always optimally distinguishable, even under optimal conditions. Methods and Results In this study, we present a method to extract the bivariate color map inherent in a given histological image and to retrospectively o…

Technology Insight: confocal laser endoscopy for in vivo diagnosis of colorectal cancer

2006

Recent studies on a novel technology, denoted confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE), have altered thinking about the possibilities of endoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. CLE is a new endoscopic tool that allows in vivo histology at subcellular resolution during ongoing endoscopy, and permits subsurface imaging of normal and neoplastic human mucosa. This new technique has unequivocal major implications for the diagnosis and clinical management of patients scheduled for screening or surveillance colonoscopy for colorectal cancer. For instance, CLE allows immediate diagnosis of colonic neoplasias, and the detection of neoplastic cells helps to target endoscopic interve…

Comparison of iceball diameter and temperature distribution achieved with 3-mm accuprobe cryoprobes in porcine and human liver tissue and human color…

2000

Abstract We aimed to assess the thermal profile and size of iceballs produced by Accuprobe cryoprobes in fresh porcine and human liver and human colorectal cancer liver metastases in vitro to allow better planning of cryosurgical treatment of liver metastases. Iceballs were produced by a 20-min single freeze cycle using 8-mm cryoprobes in pig liver in a waterbath at 37°C ( n = 8) and 3-mm cryoprobes in pig liver ( n = 8), human liver ( n = 3), and human colorectal cancer liver metastases ( n = 8). The iceball diameters and the temperatures at different distances from the cryoprobe were measured. Mean iceball diameters produced by 8-mm cryoprobes in pig liver were 56.3 mm and varied from 38.…

Rectal cancer: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI correlates with lymph node status and epidermal growth factor receptor expression

2013

Purpose To evaluate correlations between dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) and clinicopathologic data as well as immunostaining of the markers of angiogenesis epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and CXC-motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) in patients with rectal cancer. Materials and Methods Presurgical DCE-MRI was performed in 41 patients according to a standardized protocol. Two quantitative parameters (k21, A) were derived from a pharmacokinetic two-compartment model, and one semiquantitative parameter (TTP) was assessed. Standardized surgery and histopathologic examinations were performed in all patients. Immunostaining for EGFR and CXCR4 was performed an…

Endometriose des Colon transversum

2002

HISTORY A 65-year-old woman with no complaints came to our hospital for a colonoscopy because of a family history of a colorectal carcinoma. Because of postmenopausal complaints she had been undergoing estrogen therapy for the past five years. INVESTIGATIONS Colonoscopy revealed a 2 x 2 cm polyp like structure with central tissue proliferation in the transverse colon. Neither chromoendoscopy with indigocarmine nor multiple biopsies indicated an adenomatous glandular proliferation. Miniendosonography revealed the image of a tumour located in the muscularis propria. DIAGNOSIS AND CLINICAL COURSE: As a malign process could not definitely be excluded, a colon segment resection was carried out b…
