Chromoendoscopy and intravital staining techniques.

2000

Chromoendoscopy and intravital staining techniques are synonymous methods for the endoscopic early detection of malignant changes in the intestinal tract. Endoscopic intravital staining involves the use of absorptive stains (methylene blue and Lugol's solution), contrast stains (indigo carmine) and reactive stains (Congo red). Lugol's iodine solution is used to identify superficial carcinomas in the squamous epithelium of the oesophagus. Methylene blue stains the specialized intestinal epithelium in Barrett's oesophagus and, in addition to this, is helpful in the diagnosis of dysplasia. Intravital staining with indigo carmine contributes to contrasting and accentuating changed mucosal proce…

A statistical study of the quality of surface water intended for human consumption near Valencia (Spain)

2007

Water quality in the European Union is subject to legislation through directives that are applicable in all Member States. The directives specify a set of physical and chemical parameters that should be regularly controlled using a network of sampling points, with sampling based on the intended use of the water. This paper presents the results of a statistical comparison of the quality of water intended for human consumption at two different locations (the Canal de Benagéber and the Canal Júcar-Turia) near the town of Valencia (Spain). These are currently the only canals that could supply Valencia and other nearby towns with drinking water. The parameters considered in this paper are the on…

Comparison of a 48-Hour Infusion of 5-Fluorouracil without Folinic Acid with 24-Hour Folinic Acid/5-Fluorouracil in Patients with Metastatic Colorect…

2003

<i>Background:</i> Out of various high-dose 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) regimens given with or without folinic acid (FA), the optimal 5-FU schedule has still to be defined as treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). Consequently, we compared toxicity, response and survival following two FA/5-FU regimens in 55 CRC patients refractory to bolus FA/5-FU. <i>Methods:</i> Twenty-eight patients (group A) received 5-FU (60 mg/kg body weight) for 48 h, and 27 (group B) received 2-hour infusions of FA (500 mg/m2) and 24-hour infusions of 5-FU (2,600 mg/m2) until disease progression. <i>Results:</i> Both groups were a…

EVALUATION OF THE COLOR OF SOME SPANISH UNIFLORAL HONEY TYPES AS A CHARACTERIZATION PARAMETER

1992

Abstract The color of 7 types of Spanish unifloral honey from rosemary, orange blossom, lavender, eucalyptus, sunflower, heather, and honeydew was Investigated for Its potential use as a characterization parameter. Colors were estimated by visual comparison with a Lovlbond 1000 Instrument, the readings of which were transformed Into Pfund units. As an alternative method, the transmittances of liquid samples at selected wavelengths were measured, trlstlmulus values were calculated, and chromatic coordinates In the CIE-1931 (x,y,L) and CIE-1976 (L*a*b*) color spaces were determined. The correlation coefficient between x and the Pfund grading was 0.958, but visual comparisons proved to be less…

Comparison of Methods and Kits for Colorimetric Determination of Residual Chlorine in Water

1997

Abstract The use of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for residual chlorine determination in water offers 2 possibilities, one at pH 1-2 and absorbance measurement at 450 nm and another at pH 3.8-5.8 and measurement at 650 nm. The reaction of chlorine with TMB reaches its maximum sensitivity at pH 1-2. The detection limit is 2 ng/mL. A calibrated scale for colorimetric determination of residual chlorine in water with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), prepared with tropaeolin O (C.I. 14270), is described. This scale is stable for several months and can be useful in replacing the conventional and much less stable scale prepared from standard solutions of oxochlorate (I). Kits for deter…

Phosphoproteinphosphatase activity in sea urchin embryos

1964

The Crosstalk Between Signaling Pathways and Cancer Metabolism in Colorectal Cancer.

2021

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers worldwide. Metabolic reprogramming represents an important cancer hallmark in CRC. Reprogramming core metabolic pathways in cancer cells, such as glycolysis, glutaminolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, and lipid metabolism, is essential to increase energy production and biosynthesis of precursors required to support tumor initiation and progression. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that activation of oncogenes and loss of tumor suppressor genes regulate metabolic reprogramming through the downstream signaling pathways. Protein kinases, such as AKT and c-MYC, are the integral components that facilitate the crosstalk bet…
