Correlation between basal bilirubin levels and survival in advanced colorectal carcinoma treated with CPT-11-based chemotherapy: A study of the Grupp…

2008

AbstractBackgroundThis study was carried out to evaluate total basal bilirubin levels as a predictive factor for survival and toxicity in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma treated with CTP-11-based regimens.Patients and methodsThe analysis was carried out on a data base including 287 patients affected by advanced colorectal carcinoma all treated with CPT-11 plus bolus and continuous venous infusion intravenous folinic acid and 5-fluorouracil on a biweekly schedule (FOLFIRI regimen). Patients were divided into four groups according to basal bilirubin levels as follows: 0.50 and 1.00 and 1.50mg/dl. Analysis of overall median survival and time-to-progression were correlated to perfor…

Noninvasive diagnostic techniques of port wine stain.

2021

Port-wine stain (PWS) is a benign capillary malformation that most commonly occurs in the head and neck. It is present at birth and progresses over time. It is formed by progressive dilatation of post-capillary venules and is associated with hypertrophy and nodularity with increasing age, leading to cosmetic disfigurement and psychological aggravation. It is caused by genetic mosaicism in GNAQ and GNA11 genes. Histopathology is the gold standard for assessment of PWS but it is invasive and may cause scarring. Inadequate characterization of the lesions may predispose to inadequate treatment protocols as well as higher treatment dosages. Clinical evaluation of treatment efficacy is subjective…

Sonographic examination of epiaortic vessels in patients with peripheral vertigo

2010

To evaluate the utility of echo-color-Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) of extracranial brain-supplying vessels in patients with peripheral vertigo of unknown origin.One-hundred-fifty-six patients (study group; 42 male and 114 female; mean age 61.86 ± 14.14) and 161 patients (control group; 80 male and 81 female; mean age 62.31 ± 13.69) were prospectively evaluated with CDU of extracranial brain-supplying vessels. Plaques in common and/or internal carotid artery (CA), arterial wall intima-media thickness (IMT) of common CA and peak systolic velocity (PSV) and resistive index (RI) of vertebral arteries (VA) were evaluated. Parametric (t-test) and non-parametric (Mann-Whitney U-test and Kolmogoro…

Color Doppler imaging of the eye and orbit A synopsis of a 400 case experience

2009

Color Doppler imaging (CDI) is a recent advance in ultrasonography that allows simultaneous two-dimensional imaging of structure and blood flow. Doppler information is superimposed in color over a conventional gray-scale ultrasound image. Using this technique we have examined 400 eyes. The central retinal artery, posterior ciliary arteries, ophthalmic artery, the central retinal vein and the vortex veins could be located in all normal eyes. Using the color image as a guide, Doppler spectral analysis is used for quantitative assessment of blood flow velocity in these vessels. We also studied patients with intraocular tumors, arterial and venous retinal occlusions, orbital vascular anomalies …

Why Do We Have to Use Chemotherapy?

2018

The use of chemotherapy (CT) in localized rectal cancer (LARC) has two aims: first, to improve the local effect of radiotherapy by giving concomitant chemoradiation and second, to decrease systemic relapses by early treatment for occult micrometastatic disease or to shrink bulky local tumours. Neoadjuvant treatment is reserved for locally advanced disease, as defined by pelvic magnetic resonance imaging, a very useful and accurate tool to identify high-risk features for local or systemic relapse [1]. We are going to address why we have to use CT in LARC.

Pulmonary metastasectomy in colorectal cancer: a prospective study of demography and clinical characteristics of 543 patients in the Spanish colorect…

2013

Objectives To capture an accurate contemporary description of the practice of pulmonary metastasectomy for colorectal carcinoma in one national healthcare system. Design A national registry set up in Spain by Grupo Espanol de Cirugia Metastasis Pulmonares de Carcinoma Colo-Rectal (GECMP-CCR). Setting 32 Spanish thoracic units. Participants All patients with one or more histologically proven lung metastasis removed by surgery between March 2008 and February 2010. Interventions Pulmonary metastasectomy for one or more pulmonary nodules proven to be metastatic colorectal carcinoma. Primary and secondary outcome measures The age and sex of the patients having this surgery were recorded with the…

The stability of color discrimination threshold determined using pseudoisochromatic test plates

2014

Congenital red-green color vision deficiency is one of the most common genetic disorders. A previously printed set of pseudoisochromatic plates (KAMS test, 2012) was created for individual discrimination threshold determination in case of mild congenital red-green color vision deficiency using neutral colors (colors confused with gray). The diagnostics of color blind subjects was performed with Richmond HRR (4th edition, 2002) test, Oculus HMC anomaloscope, and further the examination was made using the KAMS test. 4 male subjects aged 20 to 24 years old participated in the study: all of them were diagnosed with deuteranomalia. Due to the design of the plates, the threshold of every subject …
