Tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption as risk factors for thymoma - A European case-control study
2019
PURPOSE: Hardly anything is known about the aetiology of thymoma. This paper presents data regarding tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption in relation to thymoma from the first case-control study performed on this rare tumour.METHODS: A European multi-centre case-control study including incident cases aged 35-69 years with thymoma between 1995 and 1997, was conducted in seven countries. A set of controls, used in seven parallel case-control studies by the same research group was used, including population-based controls from five countries and hospital controls with colon cancer from two countries. Altogether 103 cases, accepted by a reference pathologist, 712 colon cancer controls, and 2…
Identification of resources and skills developed by partners of patients with advanced colon cancer: a qualitative study
2018
Clinical studies on the appearance of natural anterior teeth in young and old adults
2004
Objectives: To evaluate the typical appearance of natural anterior teeth in young and elderly people and to develop guidelines for the natural appearance of dentures. Design: Clinical examination and photography. Inclusion criteria were a dental state with natural anterior teeth and no more than two crowns. Subjects: A study group (SG) consisting of 64 patients ranging in age from 60 to 86 years (67.3 ± 5.8) and a control group (CG) composed of 64 dental students aged 21–33 years (25.8 ± 2.4). Setting: Dental schools of the Johannes-Gutenberg-University Mainz and the University of Leipzig. Results: Most participants were content with the appearance of their own natural teeth. With rela…
High density of tryptase-positive mast cells in human colorectal cancer: a poor prognostic factor related to protease-activated receptor 2 expression
2013
Tryptase(+) mast cells (MCs), abundant in the invasive front of tumours, contribute to tissue remodelling. Indeed, protease-activated receptor- 2 (PAR-2) activation by MC-tryptase is considered an oncogenic event in colorectal cancer (CRC). Recently, we have suggested NHERF1 as a potential new marker in CRC. In this study, we aimed to determine the distribution of tryptase(+) MCs and PAR-2 and to examine the relationship between PAR-2 and NHERF1, investigating their reputed usefulness as tumour markers. We studied a cohort of 115 CRC specimens including primary cancer (C) and adjacent normal mucosa (NM) by immunohistochemical double staining, analyzing the protein expression of MC-tryptase,…
Color-coded duplex ultrasonography of the origin of the vertebral artery: normal values of flow velocities.
2000
The introduction of color-coded duplex ultrasonography has improved the ease of performing ultrasound investigations of the vertebral arteries. So far, normal values of flow velocities have been reported only for the intertransverse region of the vertebral artery (V2 segments). Atherosclerotic disease at the origin of the vertebral arteries (V0 segment) is frequent and is one of the risk factors for vertebrobasilar ischemic disease. Normal values of flow velocities of the vertebral artery origin are needed to assess pathologic findings, such as vertebral artery origin stenosis or dissection. The aim of this study was to describe the normal flow velocities of vertebral artery origin (V0 segm…
Colour Constancy in Goldfish and Man: Influence of Surround Size and Lightness
2002
Colour constancy was investigated by using a series of 10 simultaneously presented surface colours ranging in small steps from green through gray to red – purple. Goldfish were trained to select one medium test field when the entire setup was illuminated with white light. In the tests, either red or green illumination was used. Colour constancy, as inferred from the choice behaviour, was perfect under green illumination when the test fields were presented on a gray or a white background, but imperfect on a black background. Under red illumination and a white background, however, colour constancy was overcompensated. Here, a colour contrast effect was observed. The influence of background l…
Influence of stimulus color on the control of reaching-grasping movements.
2001
This kinematic study aimed to determine whether color is a stimulus property involved in the control of reaching-grasping movements. Subjects reached and grasped a target-object, located either on the right or on the left of the subject's midline. A distractor, placed along the subject's midline, could be randomly presented. The colors, i.e., both chromaticity (red and green stimuli were presented) and lightness, of the target and distractor were varied in experiment 1. Only stimulus lightness and only stimulus chromaticity were varied in experiments 2 and 3, respectively. In experiment 4 subjects matched with their thumb and index finger the size of the target-stimuli presented in experime…
Changes in pattern induced flicker colors are mediated by the blue-yellow opponent process.
1992
The colors of Benham's Top [pattern induced flicker colors (PIFCs)] were matched with color stimuli provided by a computer aided color mixer. Subjects viewed a series of specifically modified black and white disks and matched the resulting subjective color with a comparison field containing the color generated by additive mixing. Different phase relations between the apparently colored ring and the surround were tested. The color loci of all PIFCs were found to lie on a plane in receptor three-space which is given by the axis of the shortwave receptor excitation and a vector given by combining the middle and long wave receptor excitation directions in a fixed ratio of nearly 1:1. From the o…
Color and lightness constancy in different perceptual tasks
1998
Color and lightness constancy with respect to changing illumination was studied with three different perceptual tasks: ranking of colored papers according (1) to their lightness and (2) to their chromatic similarity in photopic, mesopic, and scotopic states of adaptation, and (3) recognition of remembered colored papers after changes of illumination in photopic vision. Constancy was found in the second task, only. Excitations of light receptors and luminance channels were computed to simulate the empirical rank orders. Results of the first task can be predicted with the hypothesis that luminance channels are activated, if lightness is asked for. Sequences arranged with respect to chromatic …
Metabolite profiling of fecal water extracts from human colorectal cancer.
2009
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in developed countries. There is a need for better preventive strategies to improve the outcome of this disease. The increasing availability of high-throughput methodologies opens up new possibilities for screening new markers. The application of NMR metabolic profiling to fecal water extracts has interesting potential as a diagnostic tool for detecting colorectal cancer. We obtained NMR metabolic profiles of fecal water extracts from patients with colorectal cancer and healthy individuals, to characterize possible differences between them and to identify potential diagnostic markers. Our results show that metabolic profiling of …
