The concentrations of total protein, secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA), lactotransferrin (LTF) and serum albumin (SA) were measured in sequential samples of colostrum, transitional and mature milk from 53 mothers divided into four groups according to gestational age and birthweight of their infants. Individual proteins were determined by single radial immunodiffusion. From the covariance analysis of data controlling for the day of lactation and the milk volume it was found that these covariables were significantly negative correlated with total protein and IgA. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbiota has been identified as an important reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that can be horizontally transferred to pathogenic species. Maternal GIT microbes can be transmitted to the offspring, and recent work indicates that such transfer starts before birth. We have used culture-independent genetic screenings to explore whether ARGs are already present in the meconium accumulated in the GIT during fetal life and in feces of 1-week-old infants. Selenium contents of human milk and infant formulas in Spain.

The selenium content of Spanish human milk samples and different milk-based and soy-based infant formulas has been estimated by using a flow injection hydride atomic absorption spectrometric method after microwave digestion of the organic matter. Mean values of 11.4 +/- 3.7 and 10.7 +/- 4.6 ng/ml for colostrum and transitional milk, 8.4 +/- 3.4 and 5.3 +/- 1.9 ng/ml for mature milk at 1 month and up to 2 months respectively, was obtained. These values are close to those reported by others authors in Europe, and lower than the ones from the US, Japan and Korea.
