Clinical management of drug-drug interactions in HCV therapy: Challenges and solutions.

2013

Contains fulltext : 118153.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients often take multiple co-medications to treat adverse events related to HCV therapy, or to manage other co-morbidities. Drug-drug interactions associated with this polypharmacy are relatively new to the field of HCV pharmacotherapy. With the advent of the direct-acting antivirals telaprevir and boceprevir, which are both substrates and inhibitors of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A iso-enzyme, knowledge and awareness of drug-drug interactions have become a cornerstone in the evaluation of patients starting and continuing HCV combination therapy. In our opinion, an overview of conducted dr…

Role of Nitrates for the Therapy of Coronary Artery Disease Patients in the Years beyond 2000

1999

Vasodilator therapy with nitrates has been used for almost a century to bring relief to patients suffering from angina. The acute anti-ischemic effects of nitro-vasodilators for the treatment and prevention of anginal attacks is unquestioned. In addition, nitrates are administered in order to reduce symptomatic and silent ischemic episodes, in patients with proven coronary heart disease who exert ST segment alterations on Holter monitoring. The reduction in total ischemic burden may result in an improved prognosis with regard to infarct prevention and possible prevention of deterioration of left ventricular function due to repetitive episodes of myocardial ischemia. In patients with unstabl…

Prospective Comparison on Cardiac Iron and Liver Iron by MR In Thalassemia Major Patients Treated with Combination Deferipron–Desferrioxamine Versus …

2010

Abstract Abstract 5164 Introduction: Using T2* MR a randomised placebo controlled study from Sardinia demonstrated combination therapy with deferiprone and desferrioxamine (DFP+DFO) significantly more effective than DFO in improving myocardial iron. One non-randomised study from Sardinia and one observational study from Greece seem to confirm for DFP+DFO therapy the most rapid clearance of cardiac iron. No data are available in literature about prospective comparisons on cardiac iron and function and liver iron in TM patients treated with DFP+DFO versus DFP and DFO in monotherapy. The aim of this multi-centre study was to assess prospectively in a large clinical setting the efficacy of the …

The use of combination therapy with 20% glycolic acid and fractional mesotherapy to reduce acne scars: a case repor

2019

Background: Acne scars are a common problem for those suffering from acne vulgaris. They may result in low self-esteem, especially if located in visible places such as the face. They may even impede normal societal functioning and withdrawal from the environment. Aim of the study: To investigate the effects of 20% glycol acid and fractional mesotherapy on the reduction of acne scars. Material and methods: We used interviews, case analysis and assessment of the effects of glycolic acid treatment and fractional mesotherapy on a 33-year-old female patient who experienced severe phlegmonosa acne. Case report: This 33-year-old female patient was struggling with acne at age 29. Purulent cysts wer…

The Role for Combined Antithrombotic Therapy with Platelet and Coagulation Inhibition After Lower Extremity Revascularization

2021

Evidence for antithrombotic treatment following lower extremity revascularization (LER) for peripheral artery disease (PAD) is limited, leading to weak and conflicting guideline recommendations and heterogeneous practice patterns. This variability in post-LER antithrombotic treatment raises quality-of-care issues that have long been under-studied. This Viewpoint reviews the most updated guidelines, currently-available evidence, and contemporary data about practice patterns and practitioner opinions in this area. Particular attention is paid to distinctions between antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulant therapy, and combination therapy in light of the recent VOYAGER-PAD (Vascular Outcomes Study…

Efficacy of combination therapy with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and calcium channel blocker in hypertension.

2012

There are few clinical trials that provide evidence to support the hypothesis that combined therapies offer a favorable risk-benefit ratio in the reduction of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Combined therapies containing an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) with a calcium channel blocker (CCB) is one of the recommended combinations in the reappraisal of the European Society of Hypertension. The authors have performed a systematic review of the available clinical evidence on the use of combined therapies containing an ACEI with a CCB versus other combinations in the management of arterial hypertension (HT) and in the reduction of cardiovascular morbidity/mortality, accord…

Viral clearance in HCV viraemic patients with normal alanine aminotransferase after combination therapy: a controlled, open-labelled study

2004

Summary Background : In patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection and persistently normal alanine aminotransferase levels, liver fibrosis has been reported in 0–22% of cases and advanced liver disease in 5–10% of cases. Aim : To determine whether patients with persistently normal alanine aminotransferase levels clear infection after anti-viral therapy at equal or different rates from infected patients with raised alanine aminotransferase levels. Methods : Thirty-five hepatitis C virus RNA-positive patients with fibrosis at liver histology (Group 1) were matched for genotype, sex, age and histology with patients with raised alanine aminotransferase levels (Group 2). Both groups were …
