The usefulness of a mathematical model of exposure for environmental risk assessment
2011
We respond to the Comment of Lang et al . [[1][1]] regarding our mathematical model [[2][2]] of exposure of non-target Lepidoptera to Bt -maize pollen expressing Cry1Ab within Europe. Lang et al . remark on the degree to which the model was subject to uncertainty. Perry et al . [[2][2]] did indeed
INTRODUZIONE AL D.LGS. 19 GENNAIO 2017, N. 3, DI ATTUAZIONE DELLA DIR. 2014/104/UE SUL RISARCIMENTO DEI DANNI PER VIOLAZIONE DELLA NORMATIVA ANTITRUST
2018
With the issuance of Legislative Decree January 19, 2017, no. 3 was implemented the…
Reader Comments Agentive Power in COVID-19 Digital News Articles: Challenging Parascientific Information?
2022
The recent COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an enormous stream of information. Parascientific digital communication has pursued different avenues, from mainstream media news to social networking, at times combined. Likewise, citizens have developed new discourse practices, with readers as active participants who claim authority. Based on a corpus of 500 reader comments from The Guardian, we analyse how readers build their authorial voice on COVID-19 news as well as their agentive power and its implications. Methodologically, we draw upon stance markers, depersonalisation strategies, and heteroglossic markers, from the perspective of discursive interpersonality. Our findings unearth that stan…
Association of Variants in the SPTLC1 Gene with Juvenile Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
2021
Key Points Question What genetic variants are associated with juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)? Findings In this family-based genetic study, exome sequencing was performed in 3 patients diagnosed with juvenile ALS and failure to thrive; this identified de novo variants in SPTLC1 (p.Ala20Ser in 2 patients and p.Ser331Tyr in 1 patient). Variants in SPTLC1 are a known cause of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy, type 1A, and these data extend the phenotype associated with this gene. Meaning De novo variants in the SPTLC1 gene are associated with juvenile ALS, a fatal neurological disorder.
Online Hate Speech in the European Union : A Discourse-Analytic Perspective
2017
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license and reports on research carried out as part of the European Union co-funded C.O.N.T.A.C.T. project which targeted hate speech and hate crime across a number of EU member states. It showcases the bearing that discourse analytic research can have on our understanding of this phenomenon that is a growing global cause for concern. Although ‘hate speech’ is often incorporated in legal and policy documents, there is no universally accepted definition, which in itself warrants research into how hatred is both expressed and perceived. The research project synthesises discourse analytic and corpus linguistics techniques, and presents its key finding…
Microsatellite Instability in Colorectal Cancer: Time to Stop Hiding!
2011
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Surgery constitutes the primary therapy for these tumors, together with chemotherapy that is usually recommended in patients with metastatic primary CRC. Although molecularly distinct entities arising from different physiopathogenic mechanisms - microsatellite (MSI) and chromosomal instability (also called microsatellite stable, MSS) - have been characterized in CRC, there is still no specific therapeutic approach that takes into account disease’s molecular heterogeneity [1]. MSI is observed in 1015% of sporadic CRCs. MSI CRCs displayed particular morphologic features, with greater predilection for the right colo…
‘You really are a great big sister’ – parasocial relationships, credibility, and the moderating role of audience comments in influencer marketing
2020
This study examines the moderating role of audience comments in influencer marketing. A YouTube vlog entry by a social media influencer featuring the endorsement of a brand was studied, and an experimental design featuring two conditions related to audience comments was created. The results indicate that a parasocial relationship with the influencer builds the perceived credibility of the influencer, while comments by other audience members moderate the effect. Influencer credibility positively affects brand trust and purchase intention. The findings enhance the understanding of the role of an active audience in influencer marketing. peerReviewed
La guerre en Syrie dans la presse en ligne : quelle expressivité dans les commentaires publics?
2018
A war is defined as a conflict between two or more countries, states, social groups, individuals, with or without an armed struggle. Currently the Western media, including online press, are very interested in the Syrian war. The Syrian civil war broke out in the context of the Arab Spring, starting with mostly peaceful demonstrations in favour of democracy and against the Baathist regime led by president Bashar al-Assad. It quickly turned into an armed rebellion that demanded the intervention of some Western countries, thus provoking much discussion. In this paper we try to understand how the phenomenon of war can intervene in the choice of identity disclosure of internet users. It should b…
Observaciones sobre una reflexión heterodoxa en los Comentarii de Juan Luis Vives a la Ciudad de Dios de San Agustín
2019
The Patres ecclesiae?s works were a frequent topic of discussion at the time in which many humanists stood against the decadent medieval scholastics. That Juan Luis Vives was part of this tradition is demonstrated in his commentaries on Saint Augustine works. Despite its pedagogical function, the scholia of the Valencian author became quite subjective. In this sense, his ecdotic work or, specially, his «criticisms and censures» can be mentioned. Here, Vives strongly disapproves of the intense political and intellectual turmoil of his epoch. Thus, this article is aimed at describing those annotations in which Vives adopts such an Erasmist point of view to comment Augustine?s De Civitate Dei.…
Evolutionary genomics can improve prediction of species' responses to climate change
2020
Abstract Global climate change (GCC) increasingly threatens biodiversity through the loss of species, and the transformation of entire ecosystems. Many species are challenged by the pace of GCC because they might not be able to respond fast enough to changing biotic and abiotic conditions. Species can respond either by shifting their range, or by persisting in their local habitat. If populations persist, they can tolerate climatic changes through phenotypic plasticity, or genetically adapt to changing conditions depending on their genetic variability and census population size to allow for de novo mutations. Otherwise, populations will experience demographic collapses and species may go ext…
