Demand for and Pricing of Mobile Internet: Evidence from a Real-World Pricing Experiment
2006
Commercialization of innovations frequently stumbles. A prominent recent example are the early (i.e. pre3G)mobile phone-enabled Internet services, whose European takeup was slower than expected. To determine why, we build a structural model of demand for such services and estimate it using consumerlevel panel data from a real world pricing experiment. The experiment allows for a decomposition of the number of wireless connections into the number of needs instances where a consumer would establish a connection if the price were zero and the conditional probability of establishing a connection. We find that needs were plenty and potential consumer surplus several magnitudes higher than that a…
Appraisal Value and Assessed Value in Italy.
2015
The appraisal value is an appraiser's opinion (not determination) of the current worth of a property on the real estate market. The assessed value is the value placed on real estate property by government assessors for determining ad valorem taxes. Assessed value is used rarely as basis for appraisal value. The Italian appraisal practice is characterized by valuations developed in subjective opinions formulated by the valuers, according to the experience and the competence rather than on the survey of the market data of comparable properties. These opinions are indicated by the term expertise, borrowed from the estimates made in the art market. In Italy, the valuation of the properties appl…
Mind Your Space! Desk Sharing Working Environments and Employee Commitment in Austria
2019
This paper empirically examines the influence of desk sharing on the various forms of employee commitment. Previous literature has examined the influence of innovative workspace on employee satisfaction as well as the possible the benefits and disadvantages of desk sharing, but not the influence desk sharing may have on employee commitment. Our study examines the level of commitment in organisations that apply desk sharing compared to those with traditional office settings, finding that desk sharing does not necessarily have a negative influence on commitment. Indeed, desk sharing employees show higher level of affective commitment when applied moderately. However, a radical application of …
Growth dynamics and space in Brazil
2003
The authors bring together two strands of the empirical literature and analyze the geography of the regional economic performance of the states of the Brazilian Federation from 1939 to 1998. Using tools from spatial statistics, they examine the spatial dependence of regional per capita income in Brazil during the past six decades. They also examine the role of geography in explaining economic growth patterns using intradistribution dynamic tools based on Markov transition matrices and stochastic kernels in a discrete and a continuous framework. The analyses reveal the existence of two spatial clusters in Brazil, a low-income cluster in the northeast and a high-income cluster in the southea…
Sensitivity of Estimators for Measuring Information Amount in Web-Based Medical Documents
2018
Nowadays, communication between patient and doctor during an appointment has changed significantly owning to the opportunity that medical portals provide. Whether or not necessarily appreciated by the doctors, the patients became more aware of the first symptoms’ suggesting a particular disease and the medical procedures that apply as a standard. Estimating amount of reliable factual medical information in a document is carried out by parametrizing space of digital documents and dividing it into subsequent layers that represent distribution of the system responses computed as random variables to a query about medical information. Analyzed are the following attributes: dynamism of decrease o…
Beta forging of Ti-6Al-4V: Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties
2013
Titanium alloys are finding an increasing use in the aeronautical field, due to their characteristics of high mechanical properties, lightness and corrosion resistance. Moreover these alloys are compatible with the carbon fibre reinforced plastics that are also finding a wide use in the aeronautical field. On the other hand the use of these alloys implies some drawbacks, for example titanium alloys are often considered more difficult to form and generally have less predictable forming characteristics than other metallic alloys such as steel and aluminum. In this paper was studied both the microstructure evolution and the mechanical properties of a Ti-6Al-4V rolled bar after hot forging. The…
Multi-objective memetic optimization for the bi-objective obnoxious p -median problem
2018
Abstract Location problems have been studied extensively in the optimization literature, the p-median being probably one of the most tackled models. The obnoxious p-median is an interesting variant that appears in the context of hazardous location. The aim of this paper is to formally introduce a bi-objective optimization model for this problem, in which a solution consists of a set of p locations, and two conflicting objectives arise. On the one hand, the sum of the minimum distance between each client and their nearest open facility and, on the other hand, the dispersion among facilities. Both objective values should be kept as large as possible for a convenient location of dangerous faci…
Skeletizing 3D-Objects by Projections
2004
Skeletization is used to simplify an object and to give an idea of the global shape of an object. This paper concerns the continuous domain. While many methods already exist, they are mostly applied in 2D-space. We present a new method to skeletize the polygonal approximation of a 3D-object, based on projections and 2D-skeletization from binary trees.
A penalty-based finite element interface technology
2002
Abstract An effective and robust interface element technology able to connect independently modeled finite element subdomains is presented. This method has been developed using the penalty constraints and allows coupling of finite element models whose nodes do not coincide along their common interface. Additionally, the present formulation leads to a computational approach that is very efficient and completely compatible with existing commercial software. A significant effort has been directed toward identifying those model characteristics (element geometric properties, material properties and loads) that most strongly affect the required penalty parameter, and subsequently to developing si…
Interactive Nonconvex Pareto Navigator for Multiobjective Optimization
2019
Abstract We introduce a new interactive multiobjective optimization method operating in the objective space called Nonconvex Pareto Navigator . It extends the Pareto Navigator method for nonconvex problems. An approximation of the Pareto optimal front in the objective space is first generated with the PAINT method using a relatively small set of Pareto optimal outcomes that is assumed to be given or computed prior to the interaction with the decision maker. The decision maker can then navigate on the approximation and direct the search for interesting regions in the objective space. In this way, the decision maker can conveniently learn about the interdependencies between the conflicting ob…
