A Rare Accident

2007

In 1964, I moved from Vienna to Homburg/Saar to take an Associate Professor position in one of the most recognized departments of urology headed by Prof. C.E. Alken. Still on duty at 4 p.m., I received a call from the chief of the surgical department to join him immediately in the emergency room.

Comparison of 2 Doses of Intravenous (IV) Temsirolimus (Temsr) in Patients with Relapsed/Refractory Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL)

2016

Abstract Introduction: Temsr (Torisel®) administered at 175 mg IV once weekly for first 3 weeks, followed by 75mg IV once weekly (Temsr 175/75 mg) is approved in the European Union for the treatment of adult patients with relapsed and/or refractory MCL based on an overall positive benefit-risk relationship demonstrated for this treatment regimen in the pivotal phase III study (Hess et al. J Clin Oncol. 2009;27:3822-9). This ongoing phase 4, multicenter, randomized, open-label study was conducted to explore whether similar efficacy can be achieved for the treatment of patients with relapsed/refractory MCL with a Temsr regimen that is expected to yield fewer side effects than the Temsr 175/75…

Critical Appraisal of Scientific Articles

2009

Despite the increasing number of scientific publications, many physicians find themselves with less and less time to read what others have written. Selection, reading, and critical appraisal of publications is, however, necessary to stay up to date in one’s field. This is also demanded by the precepts of evidence-based medicine (1, 2). Besides the medical content of a publication, its interpretation and evaluation also require understanding of the statistical methodology. Sadly, not even in science are all terms always used correctly. The word "significance," for example, has been overused because significant (or positive) results are easier to get published (3, 4). The aim of this article …

Community acquired pneumonia in children: Outpatient treatment and prevention

2015

There have been significant changes in community acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children in the last decade. These changes are related to epidemiology and clinical presentation. Resistance to antibiotics is also a changing issue. These all have to be considered when treating Community acquired pneumonia (CAP). In this document, two of the main Spanish pediatric societies involved in the treatment of CAP in children, propose a consensus concerning therapeutic approach. These societies are the Spanish Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases and the Spanish Society of Paediatric Chest Diseases. The Advisory Committee on Vaccines of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics (CAV-AEP) has also been …

Professional liability in oral surgery : legal and medical study of 63 court sentences

2010

Objectives: Dentistry, like all other health care professions, has in recent years been subjected to an increase in legal pressure by patients. Nevertheless, there are areas of activity in dentistry in which, whether because of their frequency or due to the importance of the damage and sequelae claimed, this legal pressure is greater. Amongst these areas of activity is that of oral surgery. Study design: To be meticulously analyzed in this report are 63 sentences issued by courts of second instance or higher levels regarding lawsuits involving oral surgery. The data collection file includes 13 variables. The descriptive and comparative statistical study by cross-referencing certain variable…
