Mediated communication as an entryway into interculturality

2022

In this chapter, the authors discuss how utilising mediated communication may open new possibilities into exploring and understanding intercultural communication in education. Set in the context of Finnish higher education, the chapter follows a social constructionist viewpoint into mediated communication. The chapter argues for the prevalence of media and technology-mediated communication as a tool with which citizens of a globalised world make sense of themselves as well as the other. The authors present and discuss practical examples of how learners’ own media use practices may be drawn upon in teaching, and how focusing on the everyday affordances of media allows for strengthening learn…

A qualitative study of male and female perceptions in differences in the working and domestic sphere : a comparison of the French and Finnish cultures

2015

This thesis presents a comparison between two culturally different countries in terms of gender differences causing inequality in the working and domestic life. France, one of the pioneer countries in terms of fighting for women’s rights, but at the same time strongly paternalistic and chauvinist as a result of its Latin culture, is compared to Finland, considered as an example for gender equality. The research was conducted among private French and Finnish companies, where interviews were conducted of male and female employees holding different positions in the hierarchy. The thesis presents two articles. 1) The first one focuses on the reproduction of a social structure by the organizatio…

Do humans dream of prophetic robots?

2020

Social robotics is a technology that, as its definition varies, encompasses conceptually diverse fields materializing in innovations from simple chatbots to sophisticated androids talking about the peaceful coexistence of humans and robots. The advances in social robotics have led to promising applications in education, work, entertainment, and even religion. Yet a measure of fear and confusion about the capabilities of contemporary and future robots exists, with one of the reasons being the presentation of some contemporary robots as being more advanced than they really are.

Communicating Corporate Social Responsibility – Brand management

2007

Corporate action is subject to more scrutiny than ever. An attempt to legitimize the corporate role is seen in corporate social responsibility as a part of a triple bottom line framework. Corporate principles are communicated in various forms to a wide set of stakeholders. Ideally, what is communicated in terms of principles is also seen in business practice. In cases where the principles and actions differ, the platform for creating a brand territory is limited. The communication platform is affected by, for example, corporate documents, actions and media perceptions. The studied cases, from the construction industry, illustrate how media portrays business conduct. It shows that the corpor…

Participation in Social Media: Studying Explicit and Implicit Forms of Participation in Communicative Social Networks

2016

The diverse forms of participation in social media raise many methodological and ethical issues that should be acknowledged in research. In this paper, participation in social media is studied by utilising the framework of explicit and implicit participation. The focus is on the communicative and communal aspects of social media. The aim of the paper is to promote the reconsideration of what constitutes participation when online users create connections rather than content. The underlying argument is that research on social media and the development of methods should concentrate more on implicit forms of participation.

On the spatial configuration of scatterers for given delay-angle distributions

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Engineering Letters. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.engineeringletters.com/issues_v22/issue_1/EL_22_1_05.pdf. Open access This paper investigates the distribution of scatterers located around the mobile station (MS) for given delay-angle distributions. The delay-angle distribution function represents the joint probability density function (PDF) of the time-ofarrival (TOA) and angle-of-arrival (AOA). Given such a joint PDF, we first derive a general expression for the distribution of the scatterers in both polar and Cartesian coordinates. We then analyze an important special case in which the TOA and the AOA follow the multipl…

Architettura e urbanistica, presupposti e partecipazione

2012

In analysing the relationship between architecture and urban planning, this paper starts from Leonardo Benevolo’s declaration (in 1963) that defines the latter as “a part of politics required to concretize each operational program”. So, while waiting for the long expected reform, urban planning – once as well as today – needs a complete overhaul to get a better understanding of its role and relationship with politics. The other reference is to one of the founders of this field of research, Patrick Geddes, and his definition of “civic science” (1915). This allows us to stress how modern Geddes’ urban and social planning was. The subject is analysed at its various historical stages, and the m…

Translating Legal Texts. When language meets law.

2012

The image of translation as a process of mere linguistic transposition with the sole purpose of preserving the meaning of the original message, began to be challenged at the beginning of the second half of the 20th century. With an increasing number of scholars raising doubts about the methodologies and theoretical approaches which have traditionally characterized this field of study, the 1980s and 1990s witnessed the emancipation of translation activity together with the recognition of the rights of translator. Signs of this new approach have been recognized even in the specialized field of legal communication that, notwithstanding its own peculiarities, is among the specialized languages …
