Further development of integrated threat theory and intergroup contact: a reply to Aberson (2015)
2016
ABSTRACTThis essay furthers a dialogue about the theoretical and statistical merits of Croucher's [(2013). Integrated threat theory and acceptance of immigrant assimilation: An analysis of Muslim immigration in Western Europe. Communication Monographs, 80, 46–62] study exploring the relationships between threat from an immigrant group, belief that an immigrant wants to assimilate, and intergroup contact. Key points of divergence include assertions that (a) the relationships in the original piece are counter to previous literature/relationships, (b) the correlations presented are implausible, (c) the magnitude of the relationships is too strong, and (d) the manuscript has “odd” multiple regr…
LA IMPORTANCIA DEL DINERO EN LA ELECCIÓN LABORAL
2014
Palabras c…

Further notes on sociolinguistic scales
2015
AbstractThis short paper seeks to reformulate and refine the notion of sociolinguistic scales as relative scope of understandability, thus drawing the notion fully into the realm of semiotics, rather than in the rather unproductive sphere of spatiotemporal and distributional interpretation where it has been deployed. Differences in scope of understandability are differences in the presupposability of signs, and such differences are not equivalent but stratified in a polycentric environment. Scales, in that sense, point towards the non-unified and hierarchical-layered nature of the sign and of meaning making practices. Scalar effects, once established, can furthermore be carried over into di…

2012
Communication Deviance (CD) is considered to be a potential environmental factor in gene-environment interaction leading to offspring psychopathology, for example thought disorders and mental disturbances. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between formal thought disorder of genetic high-risk and low-risk adoptees and Communication Deviance of adoptive parents when the length of their speech is standardized with spoken words (Word Count, WC). The sample included a group of 58 adoptees at high genetic risk for schizophrenia spectrum disorders and a comparison group of 96 low-risk adoptees and their adoptive families. Communication Deviance (CD) of the adoptive parents was …

Suomalaisessa skitsofrenian adoptiolapsitutkimuksessa geeni-ympäristö yhdysvaikutuksen on havaittu olevan yhteydessä yleisesti adoptiolasten psykiatrisiin häiriöihin. TUTKIMUSONGELMA: Ennustimme adoptiolasten seurannassa todettuja mielenterveyden häiriöitä perustuen heidän adoptiovanhempiensa yksilö-Rorschach -testissä todettuihin kommunikaatiohäiriöihin standardisoituna puheen pituudella. Vertasimme tätä menetelmään, jossa kommunikaatiohäiriöt oli standardisoitu transaktioiden (vastausten) lukumäärällä löy…
School Staff-centered School Development by Communicative Action: Working Methods for Creating Collective Responsibility - From the Idea to Action
2020
School development is often seen as a concerted (re-)action to educational policies, curriculum development, and change in education laws or regulations, and sometimes, as stakeholders’ reactions to low school performance. Generally, school development incorporates organizational, managerial, and educational activities and measures. This is done to adapt to the new situation to achieve the desired changes and goals initiated by a given curriculum reform. In contrast, this paper focuses on school staff–driven development: It describes how teachers together with paraprofessionals contribute to school-development. Using collective responsibility creating working methods of communication, the e…
A Changing Media Landscape. Science, the Public and the Press: The Case of Climate Change
2013
Economic restructuring in the media industry has eliminated many professional journalists’ jobs, reductions that may have been hardest on specialized journalists reporting areas like science, technology, economics, or international affairs. This makes audiences even more dependent on new, often social, media for scientific information. The concept of «critical science literacy» is introduced as a way to capture the skills needed to navigate science news in the evolving media landscape. While these same skills were needed to make sense of science in the «old» media world as well, the contemporary shift resulting in attenuation of authoritative journalistic voices is likely to continue, deman…

Latvian or English – the Language Situation in Scientific Communication in Latvia
2020
The growing dominance of English as an international language of scientific communication in the world has been widely acknowledged. However, its effect in the relevant discourse community in Latvia is still to be explored. A case study was undertaken to improve upon the current understanding of the choice of scientific publishing language in Latvia and explore historical factors underpinning the current predominance of English as the lingua franca of the scientific community. It has been concluded that with a strong focus on international publishing in indexed databases, the role of English in scientific communication in Latvia has an increasing tendency to grow. Although currently English…
