Sequential design of multioverlapping controllers for structural vibration control of tall buildings under seismic excitation
2012
In this article, a computationally effective strategy to obtain multioverlapping controllers via the inclusion principle is applied to design a state-feedback multioverlapping linear-quadratic regulator controller for a 20-story building. The proposed semidecentralized controller only requires state information of neighboring stories to compute the corresponding control actions. This particular information exchange configuration allows introducing a dramatic reduction in the transmission range required for a wireless implementation of the communications system. More specifically, just a one-story transmission range is required by the proposed multioverlapping controller, while a full-buildi…
Secondary substation power line communications for medium voltage smart grids
2012
In this paper a performance analysis is carried out, in order to evaluate the possibility to employ power line communication (PLC) between secondary substations of a medium voltage (MV) distribution networks in a smart grid. The study is focused on the analysis of PLC technologies and the evaluation of the influence quantities on the communication performance in the most common case of by-pass connection at MV bus-bars of secondary substations. Different quantities have been analyzed as modulation techniques, requested bandwidth and bitrate, coupling device and system attenuation versus frequency in order to find the best solution for a reliable communication system. A complete model of a r…
Oil filled MV/LV Power Transformer Behavior in Narrow Band Power Line Communication Systems
2012
The aim of this paper is to characterize oil-filled power transformers in the narrow-band power-line communication (PLC) frequency range of 50-150 kHz. A new model is proposed for such type of a transformer, in the aforementioned frequency range of interest, in order to study its influence on the signal transmission and to investigate the possibility that the PLC signal can cross the power transformer itself. The new model is simpler than those previously proposed in literature, and it can be used in the whole frequency range available for NB PLC according to the CENELEC EN 50065-1 A-band. In order to validate the model, simulation and measurement results are compared for four oil-filled po…
New Measurement Procedure for Load Flow Evaluation in Medium Voltage Smart Grids
2013
The aim of this paper is to present a new approach for the medium voltage (MV) distribution network load flow analysis, mainly based on power measurement at the low voltage (LV) level of MV/LV distribution substations. This allows to use measurement instruments, usually already installed in the secondary substations, thus achieving an equally reliable measurement system with a lower cost compared to measurements at the MV side. The new approach can be applied using a proper communication system to collect the nodal measurements and an iterative algorithm based on ladder iterative technique (LIT) to compute the load flow. The validity of this method is presented and discussed on the basis of…
A feasibility study of some DSM enabling solutions in small islands: The case of Lampedusa
2017
Abstract The paper addresses the issue of the transition from a traditional electrical system without automation to a newer active and smart system allowing the possibility of implementing Demand Side Management policies, for little islands not supplied by the main grid. In particular, the paper focuses on two main topics related to the definition of: • an effective control, monitoring and communication system as a tool for the full exploitation of the opportunities given by Demand Response policies; • some solutions for the automation of the end-users’ electrical installations, in order to offer to the utility flexibility to be used for the improvement of the generation and distribution ef…
Fiber-Optic Insulating Link In A Telecommunication System For An Electric Power Plant
1990
The paper presents a fiber-optic insulating link coupling electric power substation with a dispa-tching telecommunication center. The advantages of employing the FO link in the power plant telecommunication system include insulating properties, resistance to EMI and high transmission capacity. The technical and economical analyses are complemented with the example of an application of the link to the 110/15 kV station. The two-directional communication system provides transmission of voice, telemetry, telesignalization and remote control signals.
A mobile robot for vigilance tasks improved with a new robust and low cost communications system immune to attacks with EMI noise
2006
This work pretends to develop a robot for vigilance tasks that are able to tolerate diverse kinds of attacks and be able to operate in environments with elevated electromagnetic noise, being even immune to sabotage provoked by means of high electromagnetic fields. A new CAN based communications system that interconnects the different devices that compose the mobile robot has been developed to achieve this goal. The system is based on a shielded communications hub, that interconnects diverse nodes by means of CAN. On the other hand, the point to point communication between each node and the hub is carried out by means of economic optical fiber. With this approach all robot devices are connec…
On the use of narrow band power line as communication technology for medium and low voltage smart grids
2012
The aim of this work is to perform a feasibility study on the power line communication for the development of a new generation of interface devices (IDs) for smart grid applications. More in detail, this paper deals with one of the most important issues on this topic which is the communication system. Among the existing communication technologies, the study is focused on power line communications (PLCs). After a analysis of the state of the art in the field, the main aspects are analyzed, concerning the open issues on the use of PLCs, especially for medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) systems. In this work the use of PLC in MV-LV networks is investigated, by means of simulations and ex…
Optimizing the MAC Protocol in Localization Systems Based on IEEE 802.15.4 Networks
2017
Radio frequency signals are commonly used in the development of indoor localization systems. The infrastructure of these systems includes some beacons placed at known positions that exchange radio packets with users to be located. When the system is implemented using wireless sensor networks, the wireless transceivers integrated in the network motes are usually based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. But, the CSMA-CA, which is the basis for the medium access protocols in this category of communication systems, is not suitable when several users want to exchange bursts of radio packets with the same beacon to acquire the radio signal strength indicator (RSSI) values needed in the location proce…
Experimental evaluation of an hybrid communication system architecture for smart grid applications
2015
In this paper a new communication system architecture is proposed for the development of a SCADA system which can remotely monitor and control intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) connected to the low voltage distribution networks, i.e low voltage smart meter (SM), interface protection devises (IPS). New distributed metering systems and interface devices, together with a proper communication infrastructure (HiperLAN and narrowband power line communication (NB-PLC) on low voltage network), have been developed to allow monitoring the whole power system and controlling the distributed generators of a Smart Grid also in the presence of harmonic distortions. In this way, the electrical energy d…
