Intensive forest management creates habitat degradation by reducing the variation of forest stands in general, and by removing old trees and dead wood in particular. Microorganisms play critical roles in belowground ecosystems, and karst rocky desertification (KRD) control affects edaphic properties and vegetation coverage. However, the relationship between KRD control and soil bacterial communities remains unclear. 16S rRNA gene next-generation sequencing was used to investigate soil bacterial community structure, composition, diversity, and co-occurrence network from five ecological types in KRD control area. Finding the missing link between diversity and activity using denitrifying bacteria as a model functional community

The recent development and application of numerous methods mainly based on 16S rDNA analyses have brought insights into the questions of which and how many bacterial populations can be found in a given ecosystem. A new and challenging question for microbial ecologists has emerged from the exploration of this diversity: what is its significance for ecosystem functioning? We propose the denitrifying bacteria as a model microbial community for understanding the relationship between community structure and activity, and have summarized the recent progress in studies of this functional community.

How Correlated Are Community-Aware and Classical Centrality Measures in Complex Networks?

Unlike classical centrality measures, recently developed community-aware centrality measures use a network’s community structure to identify influential nodes in complex networks. This paper investigates their relationship on a set of fifty real-world networks originating from various domains. Results show that classical and community-aware centrality measures generally exhibit low to medium correlation values. These results are consistent across networks. Animals should respond to strong agents of natural selection, such as expected offspring mortality due to nest predators, in their settlement decisions. Identifying Influential Nodes: The Overlapping Modularity Vitality Framework

This paper proposes an Overlapping Modularity Vitality framework for identifying influential nodes in networks with overlapping community structures. The framework uses a generalized modularity equation and the concept of vitality to calculate the centrality of a node. We investigate three definitions of overlapping modularity and three ranking strategies prioritizing hubs, bridges, or both types of nodes. Experimental investigations involving real-world networks show that the proposed framework demonstrates the benefit of incorporating overlapping community structure information to identify critical nodes in a network.
