Localising SDGs in Rural Uganda: Learning Active Citizenship Through the Saemaul Undong Model

2021

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are premised on the principles of ‘leaving no one behind’ and transformative development. Achieving the goals requires active citizens that are engaged in community development and claiming their rights. The chapter explores the ways in which a local NGO uses Saemaul Undong (SMU), a Korean community development model, to localise holistic achievement of a number of SDGs. Drawing on theories of the travel of global ideas in institutional sociology and based on participatory research including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and participation in community activities, the chapter analyses how SMU’s three pillars of self-help, diligence and …

The Sustainable University – A Model for the Sustainable Organization

2014

Abstract The issue of sustainable development (SD) is increasingly present among the concerns of the international academic community. However, the depth of our unsustainable practices suggests that insufficient progress has been made to move from an unsustainable lifestyle to sustainable development. By sharing ideas, concepts, tools, experiences learned in different contexts, it is anticipated that we will all learn many things that will help us to help our academic communities and companies to develop the skills to make progress towards sustainable development. In response to increasing concerns of society about environmental degradation and increasing demands for a transition to a more …

Formalized classification of ephemeral wetland vegetation (Isoëto-Nanojuncetea class) in Poland (Central Europe)

2021

Formalized classification of the class Isoëto-Nanojuncetea has not been performed in Poland. We used 69,562 relevés stored in Polish Vegetation Database. Based on the literature and expert knowledge we selected 63 diagnostic species for the Isoëto-Nanojuncetea class. Unequivocal classification was applied in this work according to Cocktail method. A set of formal definitions was established using a combination of logical operators of total cover of species in case of high-rank syntaxa while sociological species groups and cover of particular species were used for logical formulas describing class, alliances and associations. An Expert System was prepared and applied to classify the whole da…

Transformation Of Individual Learning Into Organisational And Networked Learning In Vocational Education

2008

The Finnish vocational education and training system has traditionally been largely school-based with the inclusion of only short practice periods in students’ study programmes. In 2001 the system was reformed, new 3-year study programmes were introduced in all fields of study, and workplace learning (WPL; at least 6 months) became a compulsory part of all vocational study programmes. WPL is defined as systematically guided and assessed learning that takes place in authentic work environments. Thus, workplaces have to provide guidance and support for student learning and to participate in a tripartite assessment. At the beginning of the workplace learning period the student, the teacher and…

Vegetation Diversity of Screes and Taluses of The Pamir and South-Western Tian Shan in Middle Asia

2021

AbstractThis paper presents the results of phytosociological research on scree vegetation of the Pamir and south-western Tian Shan. We collected 222 phytosociological relevés during field studies conducted in 2015–2019, applying the Braun-Blanquet approach. We identified 21 plant communities on mobile and stabilized screes of colluvial cones, aprons and fans, inhabiting mainly the montane and alpine belts in several ranges (e.g. Peter the First, Alichur, Shugnan, Shachdarian, Darvaz, Rushan, Vanch, Fergana, Kyrgyz and Terskey ranges). As a result we provide the first comprehensive hierarchical syntaxonomic synopsis of scree communities at montane and alpine elevations in the eastern Middle …

Mediating Mathematics Teaching Development and Pupils’ Mathematics Learning: The Life Cycle of a Task

2011

A developmental research project in Norway, Learning Communities in Mathematics (LCM), a collaboration between university and schools, uses mathematical tasks as a basis for developing community in project workshops and for teachers’ design of tasks for classrooms. An aim in the project is that teachers and didacticians, through inquiry into design and use of tasks and reflection on and analysis of their use, will learn more about creating effective learning situations for pupils in mathematics. The processes involved are exemplified through an account of the design and use of the Mirror Task. An activity theory analysis traces the elements of learning of participants, teachers and didactic…

Voicing the challenges faced by an innovative teacher community

2011

This research draws on sociocultural theories of learning and activity theory to explore the challenges faced by an innovative community of teachers in Central Finland. The aim of the teacher community was to develop a stream of foreign‐language (FL)‐mediated teaching and learning in the locality from kindergarten to upper secondary level. To achieve this goal, the teachers needed to form coherent groups within the member schools, as well as between the schools. The aim of this research is to give voice to the challenges identified by the teachers and in so doing give voice to the teacher community itself. Recognising the voice of this community also contributes to a broader conceptualisati…

Curricula for the teaching of complete dentures in Spanish and Portuguese dental schools

2012

Objectives: Given the need to ensure that dentists are sufficiently skilled to offer the best possible care to their patients, this study aims to evaluate the teaching methods and clinical experience achieved by undergraduate dental students in Spain and Portugal as regards complete dentures. Study design: In February 2011, a questionnaire seeking information about the preclinical and clinical teaching of complete dentures was e-mailed to all Spanish and Portuguese dental schools with fully developed undergraduate degree dental programs. Results: A response rate of 82.6% was obtained. The distribution of lectures and hours spent at the laboratory and in clinical activities revealed that tea…

Collaborative Learning and Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Environments

2008

A focus on purely individual cognition has set a stage to social construction of knowledge. New learning environments, in many cases supported by computer technology, are often based on collaborating and sharing expertise. As a result research on Computer Supported Collaborative learning (CSCL) environments is a significant and growing field, which actively seeks new methods to resolve the challenges of human learning across diverse levels of interaction in a modern information society. In this chapter we will discuss the concept of collaborative learning and the issues involved in using information and communication technology to support collaborative learning. We begin with the definition…

PROGETTARE LA PARTECIPAZIONE. PRINCIPI E METODI FRA TRADIZIONE E CONTEMPORANEITÀ

2021

The theme of participation is urgent and timely, also in view of the inclusive forms of decisionmaking introduced years ago by ministerial and European norms. The research is therefore part of a well-structured cultural and regulatory context characterised by new and interesting experiments. Participation in the field of the disciplines of architecture and technological culture should be studied in its processual forms and directed above all towards strategies of recovery of the existing where the presence of urban and environmental conflicts requires new processes of requalification and/or reintegration. As widely testified by the production of manuals in recent years, carrying out partici…
