Factors in Assessing Recidivism Risk in Young Offenders

2020

The research aims to identify if the accumulation of protective and/or risk factors might predict the risk of recidivism in juvenile delinquents and determine the relative weight of both types of factors in the predictions themselves. The risk of criminal recidivism was assessed with the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth&mdash

Inter-annual variation in macroinvertebrate communities in a shallow forest lake in eastern Finland during 1990–2001

2003

As a part of the Integrated Monitoring (IM) Programme of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystems, the macroinvertebrate community of a pristine forest lake was monitored from 1990 up to the present. Lake Iso Hietajarvi is a small and shallow, weakly stratified oligotrophic headwater lake situated in Patvinsuo National Park, eastern Finland. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled annually, once in autumn at depths of 3 - 4 m (sublittoral zone) and at 7 m (profundal zone). The water quality of the lake and meteorological characteristics in the area were monitored during the same period. The inter-annual variation in macroinvertebrate abundance and taxonomic composition in the lake unaffected by …

Urbanization and stability of a bird community in winter

2009

Abstract: The main objective of this study was to analyze between-winter stability of bird communities along latitudinal (950 km) and urban gradients (from small village to towns) in Finland. Birds were surveyed at the same 30-ha study plots using the same methods in 31 villages and town centres in the winters of 1991–1992 and 1999–2000. Species richness did not differ between the 2 study winters, but variation in total abundance of birds increased with increasing urbanization. However, urbanization reduced variation in wintering bird community structure. Species richness, density of wintering birds, and dissimilarity of wintering bird communities did not vary with latitude. According to ou…

Persepsi Masyarakat Lokal Terhadap Pengembangan Hutan Mangrove Sebagai Kawasan Ekowisata Di Kampung Ruar Distrik Biak Timur Kabupaten Biak Numfor

2021

The mangrove forest area of Kampung Ruar, East Biak District, is an area that has traditionally been a place for fishing and lime-making efforts by the community who have been hereditary. This condition raises questions from various parties whether this location is suitable to be developed as a mangrove ecotourism destination. Development of Mangrove Ecotourism by the Papua Provincial Forestry Service as a tourist attraction by utilizing local natural potential and supporting tourism policies in Biak Numfor Regency. This study aims to see the socio-cultural conditions of local communities in the Mangrove Forest Area of Kampung Ruar, Biak Timur District, Biak Numfor Regency as an ecotour…

The Royal Nation in Global Perspective

2017

Adopting transnational and global history methodologies, this book suggests that the relationship between monarchies and nation-state formation has often been a symbiotic one, and that this can only be adequately explained through a global perspective, going beyond the local histories of particular state systems. While the nation-state has been the most influential concept of political community in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, royal dynasties have, however, often provided a centralized administrative-juridical-cultural locus around which a national community has crystallized itself. Monarchic rulerships have played a central role in the emergence of modern nation-states, which fo…

Geographical patterns of species turnover in aquatic plant communities

2001

1. A classic theory in biogeography predicts that high latitude communities are unstable. This may be because of decreased species richness or decreased environmental predictability and productivity towards the poles. 2. We studied latitudinal patterns in long-term community persistence of aquatic vascular plants in 112 Finnish lakes, situated within a 1000-km range from the northernmost to the southernmost lake. 3. Contrary to theoretical predictions, we found that the turnover rate of plant species in 45 years was inversely related to latitude. That is, plant communities in northern lakes were more persistent than communities in southern lakes. When we used multiple regression to find the…

Are biological classifications of headwater streams concordant across multiple taxonomic groups?

2003

Summary 1. Studies assessing human impacts on freshwater ecosystems are typically based on a single taxonomic group, often macroinvertebrates or fish. Unfortunately, the degree to which such macroinvertebrate or fish-based surveys can be generalised across other taxonomic groups remains largely unknown. A prerequisite for useful generalisations is that different taxonomic groups exhibit concordant patterns of community structure across sites. 2. We examined the concordance among fish, benthic macroinvertebrates and bryophytes in 32 streams in a boreal catchment in Finland. Our goal was to test how consistently different taxonomic groups classify stream sites; for example, can site groupings…

Are there steady-state phytoplankton assemblages in the field?

2003

The difficulty in advancing in Ecology is due, in part, to the fact that this science uses a mainly qualitative language instead of a more formal or mathematical one. Therefore, many ecologists' efforts are expended in controversies resulting from the vagueness of ecological concepts, for example: stability, equilibrium, ecosystem, community, and so on. When approaching the study of steady-state phytoplankton assemblage, the different interpretations of these concepts can paralyse fruitful discussion. In the following pages, there is an endeavour to both restrict and precise the meaning of some of the concepts related to this topic and to broaden the range of possibilities of steady-state i…
