The evolution of the euro-atlantic pluralistic security community: Impact and perspectives of the presence of American bases in Italy

The article analyses changes in the American global defense posture and the Italian exception to the current trend. It is argued that the changes in Italy cannot be fully understood unless they are analyzed in light both of the changes in the global strategies of the current leader, and of the regional framework in which those strategies are applied. The article proposes an evolutionary interpretation of the development of the American basing network and places the new American basing strategy in Italy within the context of the Euro-Atlantic pluralistic security community, which significantly influences the application and perception of that strategy.

This study contributes to the literature on informal governance by examining politics of informal agenda-setting in the European Commission. As a ‘hard case’, the paper examines how the European Commission exceeds limited legal Treaty provisions in foreign and security policy (CFSP). This system, where the Commission has come to play a more prominent role than stipulated in the treaties, is interpreted as a normalization of CFSP governance. Three complementary propositions on the informal agenda-setting role of the Commission are developed: agenda leadership (#1), coalition-building (#2), and community framing (#3). Determinants of social integration in the community: an exploratory analysis of personal, interpersonal and situational variables

This article aims to explore the effects of personal, interpersonal, and situational variables on social integration in the community. Structural equation analyses from two-wave panel data (N = 536) of adult participants living in an urban area showed that personal determinants (perceived stress and depressive mood), and situational determinants (undesirable life events) were statistically related to a decrease in social integration in the community. Interpersonal determinants (emotional, guidance, and instrumental support) were positively associated with an increase in social integration in the community. [Resumen] A partir de los últimos diagnósticos relativos a la juventud en el espacio iberoamericano (CEPAL/OIJ, 2004 y 2008), se identificaron una serie de tensiones y paradojas que enfrentan los jóvenes en sus procesos de desarrollo y de inclusión social. Para conciliar estas paradojas y lograr que los jóvenes de la región puedan realizar su potencial y contribuir a construir sociedades más igualitarias y productivas, se requieren políticas que consideren al sujeto joven en su integralidad.
