Efficiency in constrained continuous location

1998

Abstract We present a geometrical characterization of the efficient, weakly efficient and strictly efficient points for multi-objective location problems in presence of convex constraints and when distances are measured by an arbitrary norm. These results, established for a compact set of demand points, generalize similar characterizations previously obtained for uncontrained problems. They are used to show that, in planar problems, the set of constrained weakly efficient points always coincides with the closest projection of the set of unconstrained weakly efficient points onto the feasible set. This projection property which are known previously only for strictly convex norms, allows to e…

On the Kneser property for reaction–diffusion systems on unbounded domains

2009

Abstract We prove the Kneser property (i.e. the connectedness and compactness of the attainability set at any time) for reaction–diffusion systems on unbounded domains in which we do not know whether the property of uniqueness of the Cauchy problem holds or not. Using this property we obtain that the global attractor of such systems is connected. Finally, these results are applied to the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation.

Spatial correlations of mobility and immobility in a glass-forming Lennard-Jones liquid

1998

Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations of an equilibrium, glass-forming Lennard-Jones mixture, we characterize in detail the local atomic motions. We show that spatial correlations exist among particles undergoing extremely large (``mobile'') or extremely small (``immobile'') displacements over a suitably chosen time interval. The immobile particles form the cores of relatively compact clusters, while the mobile particles move cooperatively and form quasi-one-dimensional, stringlike clusters. The strength and length scale of the correlations between mobile particles are found to grow strongly with decreasing temperature, and the mean cluster size appears to diverge near the mode-cou…

The minimal model of Hahn for the Calvin cycle.

2018

There are many models of the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis in the literature. When investigating the dynamics of these models one strategy is to look at the simplest possible models in order to get the most detailed insights. We investigate a minimal model of the Calvin cycle introduced by Hahn while he was pursuing this strategy. In a variant of the model not including photorespiration it is shown that there exists exactly one positive steady state and that this steady state is unstable. For generic initial data either all concentrations tend to infinity at lates times or all concentrations tend to zero at late times. In a variant including photorespiration it is shown that for suitable v…

Lossless coding of hyperspectral images with principal polynomial analysis

2014

The transform in image coding aims to remove redundancy among data coefficients so that they can be independently coded, and to capture most of the image information in few coefficients. While the second goal ensures that discarding coefficients will not lead to large errors, the first goal ensures that simple (point-wise) coding schemes can be applied to the retained coefficients with optimal results. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) provides the best independence and data compaction for Gaussian sources. Yet, non-linear generalizations of PCA may provide better performance for more realistic non-Gaussian sources. Principal Polynomial Analysis (PPA) generalizes PCA by removing the non-li…

SURFACE AND MECHANISTIC PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Problem Often, when the characteristics of a bituminous mixture are analised, there are major differences between in-lab and in-situ results. This is due to the fact that the procedures and techniques implemented during the design phase (in lab) may be different from those used on site. Then, is very important to be able to predict the main properties of a mixture particularly when innovative materials are used. For example, when crumb rubber is used, phisical and volumetric properties of mixes may change over time, in particular due to the swelling phenomenon that it alters different properties of the mixture (e.g., viscosity). This study aims to investigate the main aspe…

First M87 Event Horizon Telescope Results. V. Physical Origin of the Asymmetric Ring

2019

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has mapped the central compact radio source of the elliptical galaxy M87 at 1.3 mm with unprecedented angular resolution. Here we consider the physical implications of the asymmetric ring seen in the 2017 EHT data. To this end, we construct a large library of models based on general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations and synthetic images produced by general relativistic ray tracing. We compare the observed visibilities with this library and confirm that the asymmetric ring is consistent with earlier predictions of strong gravitational lensing of synchrotron emission from a hot plasma orbiting near the black hole event horizon. The ring rad…

Regional differences in mu-opioid receptor-dependent modulation of basal dopamine transmission in rat striatum

2016

Abstract The nigrostriatal dopamine system is implicated in the regulation of reward and motor activity. Dopamine (DA) release in dorsal striatum (DS) is controlled by the firing rate of DA neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. However, influences at terminal level, such as those involving activation of mu opioid receptors (MORs), can play a key role in determining DA levels in striatum. Nonetheless, published data also suggest that the effect of opioid drugs on DA levels may differ depending on the DS subregion analyzed. In this study, in vivo microdialysis in rats was used to explore this regional dependence. Changes in basal DA levels induced by local retrodialysis application of DA…
