Characterization of rubberized asphalt for railway sub-ballast. Improvements in the mix-design, performance features and rational methodology of HMA_…
2018
(STR) can be incorporated into asphalt mixtures in two different methods, which are referred to as the wet-dry process. The blending of recycled rubber (CRM) with asphalt has been used for years, and several manufacturing processes have been developed in Europe as well as in the USA. The use of a bituminous sub-ballast layer has been pointed out as an exciting alternative to the granular sub-ballast design traditionally applied in most railroad tracks. Frequently, unbound granular materials are replaced by bituminous sub-ballast that provide additional benefits to the subgrade protection. Much research has been conducted on finding other alternative material to be used as a modifier in asph…
CHARACTERIZATION OF RUBBERIZED ASPHALT FOR RAILWAY SUB-BALLASTS
Fatigue and Healing Properties of Low Environmental Impact Rubberized Bitumen for Asphalt Pavement
2017
The addition of recycled tyre rubber as a modifier to enhance the mechanical properties of bitumen has proven to provide asphalt mixtures with better mechanical performance. However the rubberised bitumen presents the limitation of requiring higher manufacturing and compaction temperatures. This could be solved by subjecting the tyre rubber to sort of pre-treatments such as: Adding warm-mix additives and/or using partial devulcanisation. These solutions have the potential of lowering the overall environmental impact of the asphalt pavement, however it is still not clear whether these can be detrimental for the rubberized asphalt binder mechanical properties. This paper investigates the effe…
Improvements in aggregate-paste interface by the hydration of steelmaking waste in concretes and mortars
2019
[EN] The objective of the experimental work is to study the mechanical properties in self-compacting concretes (SCC) in which part of the limestone aggregate has been replaced by granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) in different percentages ranging from 0% to 60%. The results show that at early ages the SCC with the largest content in slag tend to have lower compressive strengths due to the poor compacting of the aggregates, although in the long-term their strength increases due to the reactivity of the slag. In fact, at the age of 365 days, the mortars made with the substitution of 50% of cement by ground GBFS reach compressive strength similar to that of the mortar made with 100% of cemen…
Unveiled the Source of the Structural Instability of HKUST-1 Powders upon Mechanical Compaction: Definition of a Fully Preserving Tableting Method
2018
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are getting closer to finally being used in commercial applications. In order to maximize their packing density, mechanical strength, stability in reactive environme...
Using the single-ring infiltrometer method to detect temporal changes in surface soil field-saturated hydraulic conductivity
2004
Abstract Determining temporal changes in field-saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K fs ) is important for understanding and modelling hydrological phenomena at the field scale. Little is known about the sensitivity of temporal change estimates to the method used for measuring K fs . The objective of this study was to compare temporal changes in K fs obtained in the surface layer of a clayey soil using two application procedures of the single-ring infiltrometer method. Rings installed permanently at the beginning of a 1.5-year study period (permanent sites, PSs, sample size N =16) and rings installed immediately before conducting the infiltrometer measurement (non-permanent sites, NPSs, N =1…
Thermal-electrical-mechanical simulation of the nickel densification by Spark Plasma Sintering. Comparison with experiments
2016
Abstract Spark Plasma Sintering is a non-conventional process of the powder metallurgy field which uses a high electrical current to rapidly produce fully dense materials. In the present paper, a thermal-electrical-mechanical model developed on ABAQUS Software is proposed to simulate the densification of a nickel disk. A compaction model, studied in [Wolff, C., Mercier, S., Couque, H., Molinari, A., 2012. Modeling of conventional hot compaction and spark plasma sintering based on modified micromechanical models of porous materials. Mechanics of Materials 49 (0), 72–91. URL http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167663611002195 ], has been used to reproduce the densification of t…
Comparison between a Uniaxial Compaction Tester and a Shear Tester for the Characterization of Powder Flowability
2014
The complete characterization of powder flow properties with shear cells is a long and time-consuming process that requires specially trained operators or costly automated instruments. For these reasons, in industrial practice, the use of simpler and less extensive measurement by uniaxial compaction testers is often preferred. However, previous studies in the literature indicate that the results of the two techniques are not directly comparable due to the different stress state conditions achieved in the two testers. In this study, an experimental campaign to measure the flow function of five different powders with a ring shear tester (RST) and a uniaxial compaction tester (UCT) was performe…
Fundamental characterisation of reclaimed asphalts: The importance of testing homogeneous specimens
2013
This study highlights the importance of defining appropriate specimen manufacturing procedures when assessing the fundamental properties of reclaimed asphalt (RA) mixes for further modelling purposes. Two gyratory compactor procedures were used: the first leading to specimens with a non-uniform air voids distribution and the second tailored to obtain homogeneous specimens. The study was performed by using three stone mastic asphalts incorporating up to 30% of RA but designed to have identical properties. A detailed characterisation of the loose mixes and binders, an X-ray computer tomography micro-structural study of the manufactured specimens and a further mechanical characterisation showe…
