Conversion of Mediterranean maquis and/or natural forest into agro-pastoral lands is a cause of soil degradation in many Mediterranean areas. Indicators of soil physical quality (SPQ) quantitatively linked to soil hydraulic properties are a valuable tool to assess the effect of land use changes. We have extensively considered here the use of Stone's theorem on the paracompactness of metric spaces in order to build up new techniques to construct an equivalent locally uniformly rotund norm on a given normed space X. The discreetness of the basis for the metric topologies gives us the necessary rigidity condition that appears in all the known cases of existence of such a renorming property [Hay99, MOTV06]. Abstract Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) are bio-electrochemical devices which convert the chemical energy content of organic fuels into electricity, thanks to the ability of anode respiring bacteria to give electrons to the anode. This result is usually achieved under anaerobic conditions, obtained with a sealed anode chamber. Small-angle X-ray scattering reveals compact domain-domain interactions in the N-terminal region of filamin C

Filamins are multi-domain, actin cross-linking, and scaffolding proteins. In addition to the actin cross-linking function, filamins have a role in mechanosensor signaling. The mechanosensor function is mediated by domain-domain interaction in the C-terminal region of filamins. Recently, we have shown that there is a three-domain interaction module in the Nterminal region of filamins, where the neighboring domains stabilize the structure of the middle domain and thereby regulate its interaction with ligands. It is well known that the death of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) is the pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most common and disabling condition in the expanding elderly population. Multiplicative Loops of Quasifields Having Complex Numbers as Kernel

We determine the multiplicative loops of locally compact connected 4-dimensional quasifields Q having the field of complex numbers as their kernel. In particular, we turn our attention to multiplicative loops which have either a normal subloop of dimension one or which contain a subgroup isomorphic to $$Spin_3({\mathbb {R}})$$ . Although the 4-dimensional semifields Q are known, their multiplicative loops have interesting Lie groups generated by left or right translations. We determine explicitly the quasifields Q which coordinatize locally compact translation planes of dimension 8 admitting an at least 16-dimensional Lie group as automorphism group.

Nitric oxide (NO) signalling plays an important role in the integration of information processed by the basal ganglia nuclei. Accordingly, considerable evidence has emerged indicating a role for NO in pathophysiological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), schizophrenia and drug addiction.
