A Framework for Comparing Financial Sustainability in EU Countries: National Accounts, Governmental Accounting and the Challenge of Harmonization

2019

The information prepared in accordance with the national accounts and public finance statistics criteria plays a decisive role in evaluating and comparing the financial sustainability of governments in the European Union (EU). As national accounts are prepared on the basis of information generated by governmental reporting systems, the elaboration of the information requires adjustments due to the lack of comparability of accounting systems. The chapter contains an analysis of the main differences between the two systems and the adjustments required, as well as their importance for EU countries. It includes a study of the level of correlation between the size of the adjustments and the acco…

How to select a biosimilar

2013

In the past few years biosimilars have penetrated the market following the expiry of patents of originator variants. This offers the opportunity to apply high-tech protein products at a lower cost. In contrast to small-molecule generics, clinicians and pharmacists have found it difficult to judge the efficacy and safety profiles of complex protein products. In recent years, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has gained knowledge on assessing comparability between biosimilars and originator products in scientific and legal areas. This article provides an overview of an extensive set of 31 previously drawn biosimilar selection criteria and describes how several of these criteria are covered …

Minimal Reporting Standards for Active Middle Ear Hearing Implants.

2017

There is currently no standardized method for reporting audiological, surgical and subjective outcome measures in clinical trials with active middle ear implants (AMEIs). It is often difficult to compare studies due to data incompatibility and to perform meta-analyses across different centres is almost impossible. A committee of ENT and audiological experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland decided to address this issue by developing new minimal standards for reporting the outcomes of AMEI clinical trials. The consensus presented here aims to provide a recommendation to enable better inter-study comparability.

What do we do when we analyse the temporal aspects of computer-supported collaborative learning? A systematic literature review

2021

To better understand the premises for successful computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), several studies over the last 10 years have analysed the temporal aspects of CSCL. We broadly define the temporal aspects of CSCL as focusing on the characteristics of or interrelations between events over time. The analysis of these aspects, however, has been loosely defined, creating challenges regarding the comparability and commensurability of studies. To address these challenges, we conducted a systematic literature review to define the temporal analysis procedure for CSCL using 78 journal papers published from 2003 to 2019. After identifying the key operations to be included in the proce…

La juste valeur satisfait-elle les qualités essentielles de l’information financière ? Le point de vue des analystes financiers français

2010

The primary purpose of the application of fair value accounting is to provide financial informations that investors find most helpful in their decision making. To help better understand this issue, this research project examines the decision usefulness of fair value information to investors. Using a survey of French financial analysts, this study investigates the principal qualitative characteristics of fair value information. We examine especially whether this information is relevant, reliable and comparable. The results document that financial analysts consider fair value as an approach able to r eflect the current economic reality of the firm and to ameliorate the assessment of financial…

Ensuring the comparability of cross-national survey data on intimate partner violence against women: a cross-sectional, population-based study in the…

2020

Objectives To ensure the cross-national comparability of the set of questions addressing physical and sexual intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) included in the European Union (EU) Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) survey. Once the measurement invariance of these measures is established, we aim to make appropriate and valid comparisons of the levels of physical and sexual IPVAW across the EU countries. Design Cross-sectional, population-based study. Participants Data were drawn from the survey conducted by the FRA on violence against women, including the responses of 42 002 adult women from the 28 countries of the EU. Main outcome measures The set of questions addressing lifet…

Biased graph walks for RDF graph embeddings

2017

Knowledge Graphs have been recognized as a valuable source for background information in many data mining, information retrieval, natural language processing, and knowledge extraction tasks. However, obtaining a suitable feature vector representation from RDF graphs is a challenging task. In this paper, we extend the RDF2Vec approach, which leverages language modeling techniques for unsupervised feature extraction from sequences of entities. We generate sequences by exploiting local information from graph substructures, harvested by graph walks, and learn latent numerical representations of entities in RDF graphs. We extend the way we compute feature vector representations by comparing twel…

Investigating Syntactic Complexity in EFL Learners' Writing across Common European Framework of Reference Levels A1, A2, and B1

2019

Abstract The study investigates the linguistic basis of Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels in English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing. Specifically, it examines whether CEFR levels can be distinguished with reference to syntactic complexity (SC) and whether the results differ between two groups of EFL learners with different first languages (Sindhi and Finnish). This sheds light on the linguistic comparability of the CEFR levels across L1 groups. Informants were teenagers from Pakistan (N = 868) and Finland (N = 287) who wrote the same argumentative essay that was rated on a CEFR-based scale. The essays were analysed for 28 SC indices with the L2 Syntactic Co…
