Before and after Science.
2017
In 1945, writing about the procession of Our Lady of Viggiano, Carlo Levi presents us a peasant world characterized by archaic beliefs and ritual practices, another world « where seasons run on peasant fatigue, [...] like three thousand years before Christ », a world « veiled with black veils, fiery and earthly [...] which you do not enter without a key of magic ». If that other world of the peasants seems to have come to an end today, the beliefs, practices and ritual symbols of reputed “pre-Christian” precedence or in any case alien to the official liturgy, as witnessed by Levi and many other narrators and demoanthropologists from the 19th and 20th century are not, however, definitively l…
Political patterning of urban namescapes and post-socialist toponymic change: A quantitative analysis of three Romanian cities
2020
Abstract Critical scholars of place-name studies have compellingly demonstrated that significant transformations in a society's namescape follow suit major power shifts and regime changes. However, despite the wealth of particular case studies existing in the literature, scarce efforts have been made to examine street name changes in a comparative framework using statistical modeling techniques of multivariate analysis. This paper aims to overcome these shortcomings by developing a comparative approach to analyzing post-socialist street-naming transformations in three Romanian cities from Transylvania (Brașov, Cluj-Napoca, and Sibiu). Based on comprehensive data collected from multiple sour…
Ammonites phylogenetic analysis: state of the art and new prospects
2004
Abstract Two main types of data are available to resolve phylogenies using fossils data: (1) stratigraphic ordering of taxa, and (2) morphological characters. In most phylogenetic studies dealing with ammonites, authors have given priority to the stratigraphic distribution of taxa. This practice is classically justified by the fact that the ammonite fossil record is frequently outstandingly good. In practice, the level of integration of stratigraphic and morphologic information in a single analysis depends on the confidence that authors have in the quality of data. Besides, many evolutionary concepts, which could differ over time and between authors (e.g. anagenesis, cladogenesis, iterative…
Mate fidelity and coloniality in waterbirds: a comparative analysis
1998
Increased opportunities for information are one potential benefit of sociality. We apply this idea to the advantages of colonial breeding in bird species that are typically monogamous within a breeding season but often form new pair-bonds in subsequent seasons. Individuals may benefit from nesting in colonies at high density by identifying good-quality potential alternative mates among their neighbours. The opportunities for finding a better mating option are likely to increase with colony size and density. We tested this prediction with a comparative analysis of the association between mate fidelity and coloniality in waterbirds (wading birds and seabirds), where there is wide variation in…
2019
Sociology and history have maintained a discontinuous relationship and a permanent discussion. Classical sociology is intrinsically historical, but after the first theoretical synthesis the dialogue between both disciplines was extinguished and it has often been necessary to defend the need for the historical view in sociology from the margins of the dominant paradigm. However, as a specialty or subdiscipline, historical sociology has consolidated its own academic space and a strong theoretical, methodological and conceptual body. In Spain this process of institutionalization has not yet success. In this article we expose a few arguments in defense of historical sociology, both theoretical …
Identity and socio-educational responsibilities of the educational mediator and the intercultural mediator: towards a clarification of functions
2012

Diversification in evolutionary arenas - assessment and synthesis
2019
Abstract Understanding how and why rates of evolutionary diversification vary is a central issue in evolutionary biology and ecology. The concept of adaptive radiation has attracted much interest, but is metaphorical and verbal in nature, making it difficult to quantitatively compare different evolutionary lineages or geographic regions. In addition, the causes of evolutionary stasis are relatively neglected. Here we review the central concepts in the evolutionary diversification literature and bring these together by proposing a general framework for estimating rates of diversification and quantifying their underlying dynamics, which can be applied across clades and regions and across spat…
