The obligation to interact electronically with the Administration and its scarce guarantees
2018
Motives, Roles, Effectiveness and the Future of the EU as an International Mediator
2018
AbstractThis article concludes this special issue on the European Union as international mediator that set out to advance our theoretical and empirical knowledge aboutEUmediation. Providing a comprehensive reflection ofEUmediation activities and the diverse settings where they take place, this concluding article identifies some connection points between the articles and discusses their findings on the motives/drivers, roles/strategies, effectiveness and institutional capacities ofEUmediation. It discusses the implications of these findings for policymaking, focusing on the conditions forEUmediation effectiveness, the advantages of the multi-layered nature ofEUmediation and the need for flex…
From the barbecue to the sauna: A comparative account of the folding of media reception into the everyday life
2021
How and why do people still get print newspapers in an era dominated by mobile and social media communication? In this article, we answer this question about the permanence of traditional media in a digital media ecosystem by analyzing 488 semi-structured interviews conducted in Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the United States. We focus on three mechanisms of media reception: access, sociality, and ritualization. Our findings show that these mechanisms are decisively shaped by patterns of everyday life that are not captured by the scholarly foci on either content- or technology-influences on media use. Thus, we argue that a non-media centric approach improves descriptive fit and ad…
Incidental Detection of a Chromosomal Aberration by Array-CGH in an Early Prenatal Diagnosis for Monogenic Disease on Coelomic Fluid
2022
Background: Turner syndrome is a rare genetic condition in which a female is partly or completely missing an X chromosome. Signs and symptoms vary among those affected. In fetuses that survive at birth and without congenital malformations, the prognosis is usually positive, but it has high lethality in utero, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: We report a case of monosomy X detected during a prenatal diagnosis for beta thalassemia on coelomic fluid (CF) at the VIII week of gestation. Beta globin gene analysis, whole genome amplification (WGA), quantitative fluorescent PCR and array comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH) were performed on DNA extracted from CF. R…
Stackelberg equilibrium with many leaders and followers. The case of zero fixed costs
2017
Abstract I study a version of the Stackelberg game with many identical firms in which leaders and followers use a continuous cost function with no fixed cost. Using lattice theoretical methods I provide a set of conditions that guarantee that the game has an equilibrium in pure strategies. With convex costs the model shows the same properties as a quasi-competitive Cournot model. The same happens with concave costs, but only when the number of followers is small. When this number is large the leaders preempt entry. I study the comparative statics and the limit behavior of the equilibrium and I show how the main determinants of market structure interact. More competition between the leaders …

Efficient change point detection in genomic sequences of continuous measurements
2010
Abstract Motivation: Knowing the exact locations of multiple change points in genomic sequences serves several biological needs, for instance when data represent aCGH profiles and it is of interest to identify possibly damaged genes involved in cancer and other diseases. Only a few of the currently available methods deal explicitly with estimation of the number and location of change points, and moreover these methods may be somewhat vulnerable to deviations of model assumptions usually employed. Results: We present a computationally efficient method to obtain estimates of the number and location of the change points. The method is based on a simple transformation of data and it provides re…
A Neurocomputational Approach to Trained and Transitive Relations in Equivalence Classes
2017
A stimulus class can be composed of perceptually different but functionally equivalent stimuli. The relations between the stimuli that are grouped in a class can be learned or derived from other stimulus relations. If stimulus A is equivalent to B, and B is equivalent to C, then the equivalence between A and C can be derived without explicit training. In this work we propose, with a neurocomputational model, a basic learning mechanism for the formation of equivalence. We also describe how the relatedness between the members of an equivalence class is developed for both trained and derived stimulus relations. Three classic studies on stimulus equivalence are simulated covering typical and at…
Implementation of quality assurance standards in European higher education: does context matter?
2019
ABSTRACTThe vast majority of studies concerning the implementation of quality assurance in higher education institutions have been conducted from a national perspective, with few cross-national stu...
