The PSOE's deliberation and democratic innovations in turbulent times for the social democracy
2020
In the midst of the great recession, the Spanish Socialists Worker's Party (PSOE) lost the Government and experienced a process of instability while trying to reconnect with its electorate. The party's strategic response was embracing highly inclusive deliberations on both key institutional and policy issues that eventually sparked tensions and division. These internal debates led to the introduction and implementation of other democratic innovations, such as direct votes and consultations that substantially transformed key features of the PSOE's organizational model. The article discusses the main features and problems of such deliberations and democratic innovations, and their wider conse…
High-urgency kidney transplantation in the Eurotransplant Kidney Allocation System : success or waste of organs? The Eurotransplant 15-year all-centr…
2016
Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: In the Eurotransplant Kidney Allocation System (ETKAS), transplant candidates can be considered for high-urgency (HU) status in case of life-threatening inability to undergo renal replacement therapy. Data on the outcomes of HU transplantation are sparse and the benefit is controversial. METHODS: We systematically analysed data from 898 ET HU kidney transplant recipients from 61 transplant centres between 1996 and 2010 and investigated the 5-year patient and graft outcomes and differences between relevant subgroups. RESULTS: Kidney recipients with an HU status were younger (median 43 versus 55 years) and spent less time on the waiting list compared…
T-pattern detection and analysis for the discovery of hidden features of behaviour
2018
Abstract Background The behaviour of all living beings consists of hidden patterns in time; consequently, its nature and its underlying dynamics are intrinsically difficult to be perceived and detected by the unaided observer. Method Such a scientific challenge calls for improved means of detection, data handling and analysis. By using a powerful and versatile technique known as T-pattern detection and analysis (TPA) it is possible to unveil hidden relationships among the behavioural events in time. Results TPA is demonstrated to be a solid and versatile tool to study the deep structure of behaviour in different experimental contexts, both in human and non human subjects. Conclusion This re…
THE ROLE OF ACCOUNTABILITY WITHIN A ZERO WASTE STRATEGY: EVIDENCES FROM A SICILIAN SMALL MUNICIPALITY
2017
Building a sustainable city model comprising an integrated waste management system has become an indispensable choice, also in the light of increasingly stringent regulatory constraints. The core point of the paper is the implementation of a zero waste strategy in a small municipality in Sicily. Given that only the unceasing participation of citizens may ensure the persistence over time of such a policy, accountability process works letting citizens approach directly the end-results of their ongoing good practices. By building up a SD model framed by a DPM chart, it is possible to figure out how disclosure of public saving resulting from the decreasing amount of waste piled up in the landfi…
A comparative analysis of two immersive virtual reality systems in the integration and visualization of natural hand interaction
2022
AbstractIt is generally accepted that the use of natural interaction provides a positive impact in Virtual Reality (VR) applications. Therefore, it is important to understand what is the best way to integrate and visualize this feature in VR. For this reason, this paper presents a comparative study of the integration of natural hand interaction in two immersive VR systems: a Cave Audio Visual Experience (CAVE) system –where users’ real hands are visible– and a non-see-through Head-Mounted Display (HMD) system –where only a virtual representation of the hands is possible–. In order to test the suitability of using this type of interaction in a CAVE and compare it to an HMD, we raise six rese…
Endosymbiont communities in Bemisia tabaci: a metagenomic approach
2014
Two Host Clades, Two Bacterial Arsenals: Evolution through Gene Losses in Facultative Endosymbionts.
2015
International audience; Bacterial endosymbiosis is an important evolutionary process in insects, which can harbor both obligate and facultative symbionts. The evolution of these symbionts is driven by evolutionary convergence, and they exhibit among the tiniest genomes in prokaryotes. The large host spectrum of facultative symbionts and the high diversity of strategies they use to infect new hosts probably impact the evolution of their genome and explain why they undergo less severe genomic erosion than obligate symbionts. Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa is suitable for the investigation of the genomic evolution of facultative symbionts because the bacteria are engaged in specific relations…
Special Education in Finland
1990
FINLAND is a small North‐European country with a population of about 5 million. It has historical ties with Sweden and Russia. Consequently, there are two official languages in the country: Finnish and Swedish. The education system is based on a 9‐year comprehensive school. Education is compulsory for all children between the ages of 7 and 16. Health and welfare services for children with disabilities are mainly provided within the regular services but special services are ensured by special laws. Special education services are provided at every level of education and learning environment modifications range from remedial education to individual instruction at home. In the comprehensive sch…
Death of a 23-year-old man from cardiac conduction system injury through a blunt chest impact after a car accident.
2014
Abstract Cardiac contusion, usually caused by blunt chest trauma, has been recognized with increased frequency over the past decades. Traffic accidents are the most frequent causes of cardiac contusion resulting from a direct blow to the chest. Myocardial contusion is difficult to diagnose; the clinical presentation varies greatly, ranging from a lack of symptoms to cardiogenic shock and arrhythmia. Although death is rare, cardiac contusion can be fatal. The authors report a case of death due to a cardiac conduction system injury from a blunt chest impact following a car accident. The autopsy showed no external signs of thoracic trauma, no evident rib or sternum fractures. A small sub-endoc…
