Pattern recognition in cyclic and discrete skills performance from inertial measurement units
2014
The aim of this study is to compare and validate an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) relative to an optic system, and to propose methods for pattern recognition to capture behavioural dynamics during sport performance. IMU validation was conducted by comparing the motions of the two arms of a compass, which was equipped with IMUs and reflective landmarks detected by a multi-camera system. Spearman’s rank correlation tests showed good correlations between the IMU and multi-camera system, especially when the angles were normalized. Bland-Altman plot, root mean square and the normalized pairwise variability index showed low differences between the two systems, confirming the good accuracy level…
Exploring non-cognitive predictors of mathematics achievement among 9th grade students
2017
Abstract This article explores the role of mathematics self-beliefs, as well as personality traits, social attitudes and well-being in students' mathematics achievement. The analysis builds on a Web survey of 9th grade students in Latvia (N = 3083). Based on a hierarchical multilevel regression analysis we find that personality, social attitudes and wellbeing variables matter more for mathematics achievement than sociodemographic variables, yet mathematics self-beliefs account for an even larger amount of variance over and above that accounted for by sociodemographic variables and personality, social attitudes and well-being. Mathematics self-beliefs, most of all mathematics self-concept, w…
A new system for the representation of places hit by disasters
2010
This paper analyses a new system for data collection and management after a disaster. In particular, the system enables to represent what exists in a place, and to visualize the preceding state, in a synoptic vision before and after the event; and also enables the consultation of synthetic information, the possibility of connections to internet sites for further in depth analysis and then the possibility of archiving and retrieving data through researching specific items. This is carried out in a simple and quick way, utilizing a portable device. The obtained product is consultable on site, or otherwise memorized and archived. Because of all these functions, it could be a useful instrument …
The Personal Wellbeing Index in Spanish Palliative Care Professionals: A Cross-Sectional Study of Wellbeing
2021
Health professionals are especially exposed to stress, with consequences on professionals’ health and wellbeing. However, palliative care professionals’ wellbeing has been the subject of very little research. The aim of this work is to study the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) in a sample of Spanish palliative care professionals, as well as to study their levels of wellbeing and the relationships of wellbeing with variables such as gender, age, marital status, profession, and professional quality of life. A cross-sectional survey of Spanish palliative care professionals was conducted. The Spanish version of the PWI and the Short version of the Professional Quality of Life Scale were used. He…
Contribution of exclusive diffractive processes to the measured azimuthal asymmetries in SIDIS
2019
Hadron leptoproduction in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) on unpolarised nucleons allows one to get information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks in a nucleon and on the Boer-Mulders function through the measurement of azimuthal modulations in the cross section. These modulations were recently measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY on proton and deuteron targets, and by the COMPASS experiment using the CERN SPS muon beam and a $^6$LiD target. In both cases, the amplitudes of the $\cos\phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependences for both positive and negative hadrons. It has been known since some time that the measu…
K− over K+ multiplicity ratio for kaons produced in DIS with a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy
2018
The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall …
Abjection and alterity in the imagining of transgender in physical education and sport: a pedagogical approach in higher education
2014
In physical education (PE) and sports there is little theoretical and empirical knowledge about transgender people, and particularly, on how they are and can be imagined within this context. In this paper, we present and analyze a pedagogical activity based on the reading and discussion of a fictional representation of a transgender person within a group of undergraduate students of Sport Sciences. Our theoretical frame situates abjection and alterity as opposing concepts on a continuum. Results show several ways in which a transgender person is imagined by students, as well as constraints and possibilities for the pedagogical proposal to promote moral imagining of transgender. Students sit…
Perceived Competence in the Face of Death before and after Nursing Studies: An Intrasubject Longitudinal Study
2021
Perceived competence is a subject’s perception of being able to interact effectively with the environment. Perceived Competence in the face of death in Nursing degree programs in which the presence of the subject of death and bereavement is key becomes more topical and relevant. The objective of this study is to determine whether this competence is improved through Nursing Studies. This study was designed as paired repeated intrasubject measures, initial measurement at the beginning of the first year and second measurement in the fourth year of the Nursing degree. One hundred and seventeen nursing students were assessed. Significant improvement is evidenced in three of the four dimensions o…
New analysis of ηπ tensor resonances measured at the COMPASS experiment
2018
We present a new amplitude analysis of the $\eta\pi$ $D$-wave in $\pi^- p\to \eta\pi^- p$ measured by COMPASS. Employing an analytical model based on the principles of the relativistic $S$-matrix, we find two resonances that can be identified with the $a_2(1320)$ and the excited $a_2^\prime(1700)$, and perform a comprehensive analysis of their pole positions. For the mass and width of the $a_2$ we find $M=(1307 \pm 1 \pm 6)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(112 \pm 1 \pm 8)$~MeV, and for the excited state $a_2^\prime$ we obtain $M=(1720 \pm 10 \pm 60)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(280\pm 10 \pm 70)$~MeV, respectively.
The mediating role of self-compassion in the relationship between victimization and psychological maladjustment in a sample of adolescents.
2014
The objectives of the present study were to analyze the relationship between victimization and psychological maladjustment in adolescents and the role of self-compassion as a mediator in this relationship. The sample was composed of 109 adolescents aged from 15 to 18 years old with poor school performance. The participants filled out a battery of questionnaires made up of: a socio-demographic data questionnaire; the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire (JVQ); the Youth Self-Report (YSR); and the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). RESULTS indicated that victimization was positively associated with psychological maladjustment. Moreover, adolescents reporting poly-victimization showed significantly …
